Random Thoughts.....

Im sort of technologically impaired. But why can't somone make an app to unlock vehicle doors. It seems to me like a smart phone should be plenty capable of unlocking my truck. I wish everybody did like Ford and put a keypad on the door.

You need a data connection (cellular connection, etc.) to the vehicle, and then a bridge between that connection and the body module or whatever module is responsible for unlocking the doors. Things like OnStar, etc., already have that capability, but it's obviously not something you can just "write an app for" if the data connection and the hardware physical layer to expose the data connection doesn't exist in that particular vehicle.

Although I've never researched it, I would be very surprised if someone didn't make an aftermarket add-on system (as a car alarm feature or whatever) that would add that capability. It would probably be over Bluetooth; Bluetooth is the darling of the aftermarket because it's so cheap and easy to implement.

Bluetooth or rfid would be the easiest.

There's no reason that new cars don't have fingerprint scanners on the door handles, similar to a cell phone.

that kind of shit is great until it doesn't work. Or you lose a finger. And then you can't get into the car :D.

I like a good old mechanical key.

I agree. I prefer old school mechanical, but push button is nice, until the control module forgets the key.

I got a 2015 Chevy 1500. Was doing something one day, & guess I had the door locked, but the window was down, & key in the switch. I reached through the window, & opened the door, the Alarm went off! Canceled it with the key fob. Then a couple weeks ago, out of curiosity, I used the Key, to unlock the door. Just never tried the key. Well, Damn, the Alarm goes off! I Don't see why the alarm would activate, using the Factory Key?

If you locked it with the fob it armed the alarm. It doesn't know the difference between the key or a Slim Jim or just busting a window and reaching in so the alarm goes off. Some cars have a switch in the lock cyl to detect that a key was used and disarm but some, like yours don't.

Usually if you set off an alarm like that and don't have a fob, it will deactivate if you switch ignition on with the key. We do that a lot at work, customer locks car with fob and leaves us just a key so we can do work and hide key/lock it up, they'll come after work and use fob to unlock.

So does sitting in a DMV.

Get all the way to the counter, thinking you're almost done, realize you missed something and then have to start all over again.

Well, you got me there. Seems like DMV wait trumps everything when it comes to things that bring the suck. My sympathies and :beer::beer: to you for putting up with the wait.

It was worth it. I got a Jeep to drive around legally.

I've gotten to where driving to work an hour early to beat all the traffic, enjoying the cooler air and once there, just sitting in my truck listening to music by myself is a pleasurable experience.
This is mostly because I hate traffic and people.

When I was in the shop we started at 6. Id show up about 0440 just to chill in the cool morning air. Scared the daylights outta one dude. I was laying in the bed of the truck (even my scrawny self is too big to lay down comfortably in a dodge dakota bench seat) and he came up snooping around my windows. Guess he wasnt expecting me to tap the bed with a pipe.... Still dont know why he didnt look in the bed first.

Its amazing how quickly so much changes. Three months ago when I applied for the local fire department Things had just slowed back down from 6 months of craziness. Now, I just got the call that I was accepted, and things are even more crazy. Work is busier than ever, me and Beth are expecting a child, and so are my brother and his girlfriend.

Life is crazy, gotta love it!

You mean like people that talk to me about sports.
lol yeah. This lady I work with constantly shows me pictures of random chit that I know or care nothing about. I try to give her subtle hints that I'd rather put my wiener in a meat grinder than listen or look at these pictures day in and day out, but she has yet to get the hint.

pics like a dog smiling wearing a birthday hat or showing me a snap of her cousin that I have seen 546,491 times already and asks if I think its funny.

But why not an OBD plug in that bluetooth connects to the phone. We do it for diagnostics. Or is OBD dead until KO?

The OBD2 port has battery power, so the Bluetooth module will get power. But, there will likely nothing to communicate with until key on. Then, you'd have to have a vehicle that exposes door lock functions from the body module or door modules or whatever over the OBD2 port. The body module, etc., will likely be awake constantly to receive wireless remote signals, alarm functions, etc., but I think mostly the module CAN transceivers are ignition switched.
