Residential building code interpretation

But won't he be in shit up to his neck when he goes to sell the house and they find out that the addition was not permitted?

Maybe down there, but around here, nothing gets permitted, so its normal.

That definitely looks like a no permit job to me...

If you hadnt already involved the city,Id say just build the darn thing. You know itll hold, and this is Murica!

this all day long.

But good for you for wanting to be a good citizen.

Lol....I’m not going to show this thread to my wife. She asked why we couldn’t just cut the tree down without asking and did we really have to pull permits...

Thats changing.
Google recently developed a G Business Suite they are marketing to Municipalities. Basically it compares arial phots to determine when an addition or new structure is built. It does it automagically and then sends a reportwith an address. Munis everywhere love it because they pay a 1 time flat fee and recoup it 10x in charges and back taxes.

Damn gooberment. Always stomping on freedom.

This.

It might not happen, but I worry about the “what if’s” too much. As long as stuff is selling down here at $175+ per sq. ft, I considered something @ramjo can help me build for significantly less to be an investment. I’d like to see a return on that investment. I definitely couldn’t claim the extra sq footage without throwing up some red flags to any halfway decent real estate agent, home inspector, appraiser, etc.

That’s brilliant......and infuriating at the same time!

Good news for me though. I’ve got this giant tree that eclipses my entire back yard ;)

Pretty sure I can do it for $150 sq/ft with the family discount o_O

Our county has been using Google Maps and Street View for years to bust people.
I have a 10x12 platform I built in the back yard 2 years ago (no permit required) which may or may not end up with an identically sized shed on it at some point, which would have been difficult due to the locale to an easement...

In this case though.... there's already a roof and walls there. While it's certainly possible, I'd think it would take some pretty clever AI and a close eye to be able to tell the difference.

Not sure how big your plot is, but did you consider turning the garage into an extra room, and then building a detached garage? Might be easier to get that permitted if your HOA allows it...

Yep someone ringed the tree about 6-8” deep all the way around. I don’t understand how someone didn’t hear or see them doing this

I don't get it. I mean, people vandalize shit all the time, just for kicks. But whats the end game in ringing this tree? Did somebody have a beef w/ it that they wanted it gone?
Pretty random thing to happen in tree-hugging Ashville

They cut it down for that? I mean a pressure washer and some tree sealant and you're on your way...
Oh hell yeah and closed one of the busiest intersections in Asheville for about 6-8 hours including rush hour. A friend of mine was caught in traffic that normally takes him about 45 minutes to get home and ended up taking him almost 3 hours because of it.

If I had the room I’d definitely consider it, but our lot is maxed out already. Just wide and deep enough for the house and current detached garage.

Have considered new trusses and a room over garage....but would really like to have the room be a part of the house.

I heard whoever did this was last seen headed your way.......

Vandalism to South Asheville tree causes traffic nightmare

Wonder what the going rate is for a tree hit man.....

If you know where the roots are you can drill into them and use a chemical of some sort.

Or, do what we did. We had some spruce trees along the driveway that kept hitting our trucks and kept snow from melting ect. They were on our land, but my aunt loved to look at them (we all lived on one long driveway ~ 1 mile total and we lived at the end). So every day we would shoot a couple 22 lr or 22 mags into them. Eventually, they turned brown, and gave us a reason to cut them. You know, for safety and all...

Had an old timer at church say that copper nails would do the trick as well...

I vote for me and @jeepinmatt to move it to my house. I got the perfect spot for it too.......14 acres to grow as big as it wants too. Now to find some government grant money to make it happen

There is a company in Orangeburg, SC that sells mature trees. We use to haul for them. They could help you in your quest....
