Residential building code interpretation

There is a company in Orangeburg, SC that sells mature trees. We use to haul for them. They could help you in your quest....

So a buddy of mine was doing trim and stair work on this giant plantation house in GA... Whole project was hush hush in some super exclusive place. Apparently the builder, architect and landscape designer were having a meeting one day. There was a huge massive live oak on the left side of the hose in the back. Well somewhere long ago the mirror tree had died. They were all talking about how they really needed another tree to mirror the one that was there. So they set out to find one they could move "easily". They settled on one that was 800 yds away. Dug around the root system... All 35-40 feet of it, then went 8ish feet down. Then they dug a trench 35-40' wide x 8ish feet from the tree to the spot where they wanted it. 2 D6's a bunch of rigging and a giant track how and they moved the tree.

Dictator Money
Big oil Money
Oak tree moving money
Fuck you money

Oh shit, I am late for work Money

I really need the one in @jcramsey backyard. He gave me a "supposed" Live Oak but turned out it was a wax myrtle......so he owes me.

His would be my mirror tree....I think the one for my house got hit by lightning and died back in the day ...so I need it .

Stopped by the Plans Examiner desk this morning with some new drawings. Different person manning the desk today. She barely looked at the plans and put her stamp on it with no questions asked. o_O

I mentioned I'd been there before with engineered drawings that weren’t approved. She said they usually give engineers leeway to design things and let me know what days she worked the desk so at least I dont have to deal with the other guy now...

We're rolling now.... Had a new baby 8/10 and took three weeks off while my wife recovered. Started demo near the end of week 2 and @ramjo came down last Monday with a truckload of tools and some serious carpentering (its a word) skills. I couldn't have done this without him. Although, after helping him for a week, I feel a little more capable. It's now fully sheeted and wrapped until I can buy 10 windows and a door and find time to start installing them.

I lost a little sleep waiting on the inspector to come check out our footings, but he looked at them for all of 5 seconds and gave it the thumbs up. :rockon:He let me text him pictures of the joist and hangers before we closed up the floor so we didn't have to schedule him to come out and inspect that and could keep on working.

Maybe you can get some part time work with those people advertising $40 hr carpenter positions ......or maybe I just need to go work about 3 days a week down there :D .

You'd do good on 3 days a week. Plenty of people down here willing to spend big money to have other people do stuff for them. I'm not one of those people, but they're down here for sure :D

Congrats on all counts!

I hope your wife is doing well! My husband took 3 *days* off work for each of our 3 babies, including the day they were born!

Thanks!

Momma is doing good! She has a pretty high pain tolerance, and it took two solid weeks to get over the surgery, so I'm not sure how people do it without help!

And honestly, that's probably a bit excessive....
I mean we didnt do nothing but cheer and catch, right?

I was god to return to work that afternoon.

Managed to get a few free hours this weekend and got half of my windows put in. Got five more and a door to go.

Just went with some off the shelf ones from Lowe’s...look to be about the same quality as our spec house windows. First time I went to get the windows, the sales guy informed me that they didn’t meet code for our area, and tried to order me some that were about $80 more per window. Called inspector and he said as long as I have the cutouts to put over the windows in case of a hurricane I would be ok.

So why then would they stock a window that doesn’t meet code?

Because...... Lowe’s. That’s why. :shaking:

Seriously, I couldn’t believe it when he told me that they didn’t meet code. I’m guessing it’s a ploy to upsell you on a custom window that they would have to order....which the sales associate was quick to do for me.

I was promised i could work in a tank top and flip flops.....ends up being 30 degrees. Good thing the trucks always loaded with enough carhartt and flannel to keep me from whining...too much

Took a while, but we finished up the addition. @ramjo came down a couple months ago and I helped him tear down the leaky chimney and patch up the roof, finish off the siding and run some electrical. I hired out the AC/gas, sheetrock and tile so I could get it wrapped up....just before our son's 1st birthday. o_O My wife gets the patience award for the year.

Funny story....neighbors across the street who enclosed their existing back porch without pulling any permits put their house on the market the beginning of the summer. It had a contract almost immediately but it fell through. Apparently the buyer started asking questions about the addition and it was learned that it wasn't permitted. In the end they got it sorted out with some engineered drawings and by adding some plates to tie the walls into the pad. I wasn't going to say anything, but my wife gave me the OK to say "I told you so". :p

Now you just have to find something interesting to do with the spot where the fireplace is. We're in the same boat; we got our leaky chimney chase removed and the roof patched over, but haven't figured out what to do with the non-functional fireplace.

We ran a gas line in and put in some ventless gas logs so it will still function as a fireplace that one time a year that we need it. Should work way better than the old wood burner ever did...it produced zero useful heat and really only served to let air into the house.

You could easily hide a stripper pole behind it.

Bumping this up to ask a different question...Anybody have experience w/ a non licensed builder exemption in SC? Specifically not being able to sell/rent for two years after completion. Anybody know what department enforces this? What would the consequence be for violating?

Asking for a friend :D
