Samson Rd/Richland Rd

Gents,

If we were all standing around I'd think we'd be having a good time and a nice discussion. Let's not let the fact we're sitting in front of monitors change that.

We're all here for the same thing.

Abadjeeper, you want to bring the garbage bags or would you like me to? :huggy:

How long does it take to run the whole trail? Is it a 2 hour drive, or an all day event?
Curious as well. And since it is a "road" not an actual trail, stockish vehicles should be fine on the "road" correct? My wife and I go up to the mountains quite often and enjoy exploring/hiking etc, so we wouldn't mind a nice trailride, we would likely drive her Infinity QX4, basically just a gussied up Pathfinder with 31" A/Ts.

Yep. I'm thinking of bringing the wife and kids, and since it's by Blowing Rock we'd go do some Snow Tubing at Hawk's Nest. I can convince her that Mapquest says Richland Road is the shortcut up to Blowing Rock :)

It can be done in probably less than 45 minutes if you don't mind beating up yourself and vehicle bouncing over rocks. Its fun if you take 1.5-2hrs.

A stock TJ will have no problems other than traction if its muddy, but I dunno about an Infinity QX4.

I wasn't sure, pics are few and far between (haven't gotten a chance to see the videos) with the exception of a few pics of the "playground" sections that can apparently be avoided, a few somewhat rocky creek crossings, and a report from 05 on here where a Rubicon (didn't mention stock or not) did the entire run in 2wd.

What "it" are you referring to exactly? Out and back?

I've looked at the maps and it looks like you can go Richland Rd>Confusing part in the middle>Samson Rd and come out up on the Parkway near Aho Rd. Looks like that could take longer than 45 minutes to 2 hours?

I was particularly referring to when you leave pavement and cross the Yadkin river on the west end, to when you hit the gravel road on the east end. I think its Penley or Sampson, but I don't have my good maps with me and google doesnt show it well.

45 minutes is carrying consistent speed...

Ive definitely done the whole thing in 2wd when I had my TJ. It was on 32's and was the 4banger model. I have gotten stuck once, but that was playing around and got into some nasty mud. Thats the only way to get stuck in there, being stupid.

We have been in there anywhere from 45 minutes to several hours, its really up to you and how fast you want to go.

Has anyone been to these "roads" lately?
I've never been on them but was thinking about going up to Boone/Blowing Rock and doing a little exploring this weekend.
I searched and found all kinds of conflicting info about gates. tresspassing, connections between the 2 roads, meth labs, zombie attacks, etc.
Any relevant, current info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going up there tomorrow to check it out.

Went today!!! Had a great time. Did not see any Zombies or anyone else.... Drove through at about 3 to 7 mph and did it within 1.5 hours. Didn't even air down my tires, but next time will just to take off some of the bumpyness.

About how long would it take to get there from the Winston area? Sounds like there's no direct shot to get there.

Had a blast today guys. I got some good pictures too. Thanks for letting us tag along. We just heard there was a bad wreck on 321 though. Hopefully you were all down the mountain by then though.

WE must have missed Greywolf. We had 7 rigs up there today. It was fun and a nice change of pace. The only person who gave us a hard time was the lady working at the gas station at the bottom of the hill.

Her: You guys headed to Richland RD? (there were 7 Jeeps in her parking lot.......)
Us: Yes
Her: You better watch out
Us: Why is that?
Her: There's a bunch of police up there.
Us: We weren't planning on breaking any laws. I think we'll be fine.
Her: They don't want you up there.
Us: Gave her a WTF? look and said Have a nice day.

I was going to purchase some stuff from her store, but after that welcome, I just left.

It was a good time. No zombies, no methheads, no angry landowners, no cops. Just a nice stroll through the woods. Total trail time was about 3 hours and my GPS said we were actually moving for 1:48. That's Richland Rd to Samson Rd to Mast General Store in Boone when I remembered to turn the tracking off.

Sounds like she didn't want yall to find her methlab...

Let me know next time y'all head up there. That sounds like fun.

I'm planning to head up there Saturday to ride through. Looks like there may be some flurries, so it should make for a nice ride :)

I would love to. BUT our club ride is this weekend. I do want to go up soon tho!
