Samson Rd/Richland Rd

Any chance anybody is going on the Sat, Feb 18? I'll be in Winston, my BIL may want to take his FJC out...

WE must have missed Greywolf. We had 7 rigs up there today. It was fun and a nice change of pace. The only person who gave us a hard time was the lady working at the gas station at the bottom of the hill.
Her: You guys headed to Richland RD? (there were 7 Jeeps in her parking lot.......)
Us: Yes
Her: You better watch out
Us: Why is that?
Her: There's a bunch of police up there.
Us: We weren't planning on breaking any laws. I think we'll be fine.
Her: They don't want you up there.
Us: Gave her a WTF? look and said Have a nice day.
I was going to purchase some stuff from her store, but after that welcome, I just left.
It was a good time. No zombies, no methheads, no angry landowners, no cops. Just a nice stroll through the woods. Total trail time was about 3 hours and my GPS said we were actually moving for 1:48. That's Richland Rd to Samson Rd to Mast General Store in Boone when I remembered to turn the tracking off.

If I'm not mistaken she lives around there :shaking:

Was the rolleyes for me or her?

I can understand them not wanting people acting like idiots in their backyard, but to treat everyone like they are hooligans is ignorant. We actually hauled out a bag of trash. I didn't see her up there doing anything positive for the area.

You (the landowners) bought property on a state road. Yes, it's unmaintained. It's still public property.

Think it through. If you're a kid with a 4wd vehicle and you want to screw your GF, shoot off fireworks, shoot guns, use drugs or drink underage, where are you gonna go? Somewhere the cops are not likely to be!!

If you see someone breaking the law, call the cops. Stop with the signs trying to scare people off. We're not all dumb kids.

This lady could look at folks like us as a good thing: gassing up our rigs and filling up our bellies before we hit the trail. Instead of giving us the stink eye and trying to scare us off. I'll go up there again, but I'll stop before I get to her store if I need anything. And I hope others will as well.

I'm in no way arguing whether or not people should or shouldn't go there as it is public property. However I have been personally ousted by uniformed officers. Whether I would have been right to argue the case would not have mattered because you know they will be right if ya know what I mean. That said I have been back and did not see cops or anything else telling me I couldn't go. If you want to go, its pretty cool so enjoy it. Just know the cop stories are not entirely mythical.

The rednecks who shoot cases of shells at a time and drink are the problem. You could probably get a bag of trash there daily. I've actually wheeled with a guy that lives past the first creek crossing.

The elevation there is not quite high enough for mountain snow, but you will end up in boone so you will be right on for sledding

So you are thinking there wont be any snow out on the trail. I was hoping to combine the trail ride with sledding. Well it looks like they increased the snow totals from last night so I will probably take a ride tomorrow to check it out. Are there any parks in the Boone area that my 2.5 yr old can sled without getting run over?

Used to go sledding where Holloway Mt Rd crossed Blue Ridge Parkway. A great hill for sledding with the little ones. I *think* there was a small hill at Beech Mt town hall for kids only. They made snow there.

We would have around 3" in ashe and still snowing but the high winds is blowing it away. I would say its about the same in Boone.

Hey Jason. Told you I was going to the condo in banner elk. Only took an hour, it's about 55 miles away from the flatts. Here's what it looks like.

got a group heading up this Saturday on the 25th. Will be meeting for breakfast quickly at Bojangles in Lenoir on 321. Most trucks will park at the A.J.s steak house just past the bojangles because there parking lot is small. Mostly just local guys but anyone is welcome. If you have never been and want to follow some people who have been riding up there for years be at Bojo's at 9 am.

I may join your group Sat. It's been a long time since I was up there & would rather go with a group this time.

I'm going to try to make it Saturday. If the wife's back permits and she's able to keep the kids for a while so I can get away...

I've never been up there and would prefer to go with some people that know the area.

I remember you could go around a wood bridge and then you came up on a big rock but I think it got blasted away. Always was fun to take this trail on the way to snowboarding.
