I get really tired of hearing the 40 something year old men at my work talk about 'the game' last night and how 'we' played good. Oh really, so besides working here full time, you also attend the university of blahblah, and play on their basketball team?

 Yeah... definitely a pet peeve of mine, too.

I love my teams but I have no illusions about any impact my being a fan has or doesn't have on their performance. This wasn't always the case, I was a kid when (cough) State had a basketball team (cough) and I remember feeling like if you didn't watch and will them to win, it wouldn't happen. Well, we know how that went...

Agreed...I think it's sad really, but everyone wants to feel like they helped or are part of a winner. This country puts entirely too much weight in to idolizing athletes.

My BIL went to Pedue and 'm so sick of hearing about the boiler makers. Glad I only see him every 1-2 years...

I usually hit em with "What size engine it got?" and that shuts him down pretty quick.

At work I just accept that some people live vicariously through others.

winner winner :)

same as women talking about what happened in hollywood..

I think that 'we' is ok if they went there. I really do like when people have a sense of pride about thier school.

However, if you didn't graduate from high school. You can't say we when talking about 'Duke'

I don't see the big deal. I went to UT and when talking sports I've been know to throw it out there. I went to school there, paid the ginormous fees, went to every game I could so I feel like I can say that because as an alumni you're still part of the school.

people who slurp their coffee... now that gets on my nerves.

i am a huge sports fan. this morning i said "we" played like shit. being a duke fan i feel like i am part of them, i know i can't "will" them to do anything.
if you spent as much money as i have on duke stuff you may feel like you were part of them also.

I use the "we" thing too often when talking about Clemson football.
But I went there. Played there. and spend several thousand dollars a year following the team...Ill still use we thank you.

This is how I feel. it is cool to support a team/college you have not gone to, but to the point of saying we and tieing ones self to a team/college you have not been to is retarded to me.

Me I am little backwards went to school at Appstate transfered to UNCC and graduated. I dispise UNCC but will support mountainers all day long. At least I went to the school as a student.

But sometimes it is funny to hear people like that talk and get all worked up. It makes it so much easier to mess with them when they are like that.

NO SHIT! THANK YOU! I have them here too. annoying to constantly over hear the Production manager talking to vendors. Every call starts out or gets into the same damn thing. Feel like I'm watching sports center on repeat. :shaking:

NO SHEET! Manners are under rated. The sad thing about older and younger guys chattin about sports n stuff is that they can do it for a dang hour and nuthin said, I can come back from lunch 5 min. late and freakin get fussed at. WTF!

FACTS...I believe anyone who is a former athlete for a Univ. has the right to use "we" in reference to their team or school.

I'm probably just as bad as the sports fans. My cube is cluttered with Peterson's magazines and other offroad memorabilia. I don't talk about it unless asked though..which happens like every day. :p

I don't get "ball" related sports either. I don't see the appeal. I'd rather get out and play and enjoy my sport, not watch someone else do it.

YOU get a pass - played for the team.
everybody else - no.

Ive never understood the we thing personally. I wouldn't even use "we" in regards to the college I went to, played for, and won a national championship with.

Agreed, when my eligibility was over at UT, the appeal to sports just wasn't there for me anymore. If I wasn't playing, I didn't really give a rats ass. I enjoy watching my siblings play, and I enjoyed coaching the local middle school football team, but that's about the extent of my involvement in sports anymore.

Call me in say 6-7 years.

I didn't go to a single game for at least 5 years after playing.
Heck even going to the local HS game to watch my sister in the band fired the blood up...but was no fun. Hell Id actually be depressed for a week or two...I just missed it that bad.

Finally about 5 years ago we decided to get season tickets to Clemson football again, mainly because my primary fall weekend pastime - deer hunting meant that I was spending all weekend away from my family after being way for work all week. the ball game/tailgate deal allowed us as a family to hang out all weekend and enjoy the game as a side bar.

Now I wouldn't miss it for the world. Talking to most of my friends from those days it is almost universally the same.

I agree with using 'we' if ya went to the school.
Even more so, like Ron, if you played there.
What I don't get is the people who say 'we' and didn't go there.... um and happen to have a tattoo of that college on them.
wth?
Then take that to pro sports, I think thats even more odd.
Going to games and cheering - thats entertainment. Its different. Hell I went to the ACC championship at charlotte funny I don't remember watching.
One more thing along the same lines as Ron's deer hunting weekends... I don't sit on the couch and watch games. I have a family to spend time with not the TV. Its rare I watch any game now and I used to, a lot. Especially ACC bball.
oh well priorities.
