Suspicious acting guys at Uwharrie today

Also, we could talk to the groups that sponsor the trails and the forest service about putting up some signs underneath the brown trail sponsor signs.

Good take, Chris! That was one of the ideas Ranger Walker put out at our meeting. I'm just afraid the FS kiosks are old hat and most regular users don't even notice them anymore.

Hey guys, look at the score of people you have already hit. Over a THOUSAND has looked at this thread already, and this is a spinoff from another subject entirely. Don't forget the power of a thread on this forum! You could start a thread NAKED MODELS AT URE and have 5,000 hits on it and just say "Please don't litter at URE!"
" The Not Work Safe Thread to post all your -----Hotties ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 ... Last Page) Yesterday 09:59 AM 64,565 "
very interesting.....

Maybe there is a way to educate the FS and environmentalists, that we all do not act irresponsibly. I dont think it really matters what we do, we just have to make sure the right people see our efforts.

They know about the responsible wheelers and the bad apples too. There has been many efforts, workdays, etc... over the years. The URE forrest service are great folks, they know alot.

They do have alot to do and are pretty busy.

This'' awareness drive'' coukld be handled by us, the concerned tax payers, that want to keep our trails.

We cant bother the FS with teaching proper trail etiquette.
They already have signs and rules posted.

We need to reach the folks that never read the signs.

Any of you that know me, know that I'm not afraid to just go up to a stranger and strike up a friendly conversation. I may get laughed at when I leave, but oh well. At least the etiquette seed will be planted.

I'm talking about the metal signs that are on the trail. I rarely look at the kiosks myself. But every time I pass by a sign on the trail I notice it.

You know what would be interesting, is put the trial etiquette/rules on the backside of the season pass.

I don't think they types that buy season passes are the ones we're concerned about.. just my guess.. ;)

I agree with a lot of the ideas here, maybe a dash sticker. It could look like a gauge and "read" lots of tread lightly , or no trash with a pointer or something. It has to be something you would want. Maybe a copy of a Auto Meter gauge.

How about a circle with the line through a trash can with a caption of [circle the top]

"keep Uwharrie clean" [circle the bottom] "please tread lightly"

If anyone decides to go the sticker route in what ever shape or form just let me know. I will help in anyway I can. Here is a quick design I threw together leaning more to the bold side of things:

The same holds true for "new" visitors to URE... last trip down to Flintlock, the Ranger handed out 3 $50 tickets for folks not having a $3 pass. They all plead ignorance... despite signs (w/ 6" lettering) on 3 sides of the bulletin board stating a pass was required! :shaking:

I truly believe the folks littering are not members of any organization, nor involved here. The majority of infractions I've witnessed have been from what appeared to be "minimally educated", lower income folk in the 16-20 Y/O range. I suspect they know it's wrong to be in possession of alcohol, wrong, to drink & drive, wrong to pitch their trash on the trails, wrong to drive off the defined trails, & wrong to destroy fencing/barricades/facilities... but they did & continue to give us all a bad rap.

Perhaps a series of "Burma Shave" signs along the entrances off 109 listing the major rules?

stickers on the back and/or sides of our rigs would work well. so they dont usually fall off and create more litter, and when others look at the awesomeness of our rigs they will likely notice them as well. i like one that says "keep it clean dumba..!," I mean, uhh, "keep ure clean!"

I need more stickers anyway....:D

What about

"OHV does not mean off TRAIL vehicle!!!"

"new" bypasses is one of the major issues (ie those not created by FS but the spider trails that crop up, causing more open trail / dirt for erosion)

Kodak is a good example of this, it was maybe 25-40 feet wide a few years ago, and now it is closer to 25-40 YARDS?

Stickers / combined with catchy slogans, and all of the GOOD guys going in on EVERY SINGLE trip with a trash bag hanging off your rig / picking up the litter others put down would go a long way.

I agree most of the problem is not with the members of this board. Here is another good way to get the offenders to see our way, and with no conflict.

Earlier this summer we were riding on the trails and I noticed a group of 4-wheelers going off the trails and just doing everything we are talking about here. As the "leader" of the pack went to pass me, I pulled the jeep into their path and stopped them. I explained in a very nice tone that I was an off-duty Forest Ranger, and I had witnessed them breaking the rules several times. Because I was "off duty" I could do nothing, but I could call my friend ranger at the bottom of the hill and they could come up and fine them and throw them out of the forest. I was nice and cordual about the entire thing, and told them to have a blast on marked trails. The rest of the day when I saw them they were model citizens.

I guess the moral of the story is: Sometimes it's ok to lie.

How about some printed napkins at your stand, that go w/ the dog?

If these get made I want one for the back of the xj. I don't have a lot of cash but would love to rock that sticker! I'm thinking 8"x11" woudl do nice and could easly price them I would assume. Hell can you buy adhesive paper for inkjett printers? I'll steal it and rock it on the 5th!

I didn't want to make a shameful plug, but if I can help in any way let me know. I am there every weekend (weather permitting) all you need to do is bring a chair and most of the people will come to you! Talk to them while they're eating, offer a trashbag from the club that you represent! Get involved, use me! I say this to all the clubs and groups on this Forum, this the easiest (volenteer) work you can do. Everbody that comes to my cart is open to conversation about almost anything, you don't have to ride every time you go to URE to have fun. If you are in my area you can ride with me. Just something to think about. We've got till April 1st to think about it. How would that look in the eyes of URE FS?

you should make another that says something about staying on marked trails. That is as important, if not more so, than litter. I would rock them both, on all my vehicles.
