Anyone else teaching their kid to weld / metal fabrication?

My kid wanted to learn to weld. I thought I would never hear him ask to learn. So when the words came out of his mouth I wasted no time getting him down to the shop.

I suited him up in protective gear, showed him a couple things. I think the most effective thing was to put my hands over the top of his and have him pull the trigger. I guided his hands and talked to him about the speed, motion, and so on. After a couple minutes of talking about it he told be to stand back that he had it. LOL I left him alone for a couple minutes to weld. He then asked me to make a video so he could show his friends. So here is the video.... My 11 year old MIG welding.

My 9 year old nephew has been begging me to teach him but my welder is just too finicky to even use much less teach someone. But that was awesome.

I can't wait for the day when I can teach my boy or girl to weld. Teaching them TIG is going to be fun, but it's going to be interesting when they learn what spatter in a shoe feels like!

That is awesome man! Start em young and teach em all you can!

Thats about the age my dad started letting me do stuff like that (welding, torch, basic stuff i use now) his advice to you would probably go about like this "anything you dont want welded or cut remove it from the shop or reach of the welder"

That sounded like BACON! Congrats on having a kid that wants to learn instead of sitting in front of a TV or phone. I cant wait for the day I can teach my daughter to weld or even change the oil in her car.

Yeah he still wants to sit in front of the tv and play XBox more than I like, but I guess he is into it. Hopefully I can keep at it and get him more interested in the shop.

Awesome

My 5 year old is in the garage with me all the time. He has his own ear protection and masks. He wears my spare welding helmet when I weld or grind. And he loves helping me sweep up.

It so cool to pass on knowledge when I know they won't learn any of this stuff in regular school

I'm fostering a lil girl, 22months old. She loves being under the jeep and smacking stuff with a hammer. Maybe its the noise or maybe she's a tom-boy only time will tell.

In a year or so I'll be starting my daughter on the TIG. I always said I'd have her better at welding than all my buddies before she was 2 but I just cant make myself let her get that first burn this young. I guess she'll have to wait till she's 3. And yes there will also be a small kit buggy in her near future :burnout:

Thats cool. Yeah my son spent more time at the shop with me when he was younger. He is more into xBox these days but I am working to change that. haha

i don't weld well enough to teach, but my granddaughter (2yrs old) is sure learning something from her paw-paw. (i think she's trying to install a doubler)

Awesome. I think the biggest thing here is she is having fun.

the funny thing is, the only time she ever sees me working on a car, it's on a lift. i surely don't flip cars on their sides to work on them, but she knows enough to flip them over.
if anything in her house breaks (toys, door knob, light, ect) she won't let her mom or dad fix it, she will freak out and say "No paw-paw fix".
