The quest for 30 more danas

That's good. Been thinking about getting one for working on my Jeep but wasn't sure if it was Worth the money. Can't wait to see the progress on your buggy

That think looks it could be heated. Sweet

So when you finish where do you plan on storing this thing ?

I hope you attached that thing to the ground with something other than a cc block. A good wind will send it tumbling. I have a dog kennel with a tarp attached to it and it's been sent airborne twice.

It has ground anchors and sides have bars at bottom to hold sides tight. Wind would have a hard time getting in to pick it up with it all closed up

Shit talking has already started about the tbi motor. I joking said find me a motor cheap and I'll put a ls in it..... looks like I'm heading to SC Sunday to pick up a 5.3 with 160,000 miles with harness and computer....

why?? tbi are stupid easy/cheap to make power and those tb's flow very well in inclination and there are very cheap propane kits for those motors too?

I can tell you my recent exp. I would not redo the LS compared to how easy the tbi motors are for this offroad stuff.

Ls is all there. My tbi motor needs new intake up all accessories and a wiring harness.

And I only know about a dozen or so guys that are pretty damn smart working on ls stuff

And the 5.3 is 300 bucks

if its in the budget, heck yeah man! lemme know if you need any part numbers. I wrote most everything down in the logbook

Its all the extra shit to make an LS last that cost the $$. Oil pan, headers, accumulator, accessory relo brackets, gauge adapters, etc.

Doesn't have to be super expensive.

Truck oil pan works great, just plan for its depth in the build- no need for accumulator afterwards- unless you just want the insurance of it.

Stock manifolds flow great and don't put off near the heat of headers- bonus; they typically clear your driveshaft and already clear your motor mounts....

Build around truck accessory mounts, they're higher than the f-body beltline anyway.... another plus the harness already fits it...

Biggest cost is harness and tune, dbw or custom cable, torque converter spacer, intake ducting, and I run my temp gauge tapped behind the thermostat on the engine side of the water pump and you can tap the oil cross over cover above the oil filter for your oil pressure gauge.... no adapters needed.

But it can be quite expensive if you want it to.

^^ This exactly. If you have to build the motor to fit the vehicle it can get expensive quick, but if you can build around a complete pullout it can be relatively inexpensive. If you aren't worried about a pretty wiring harness and can read a diagram you can easily run a factory harness. You should be able to get by without a tune if you keep the factory manifolds and run the MAF.

I love TBI motors, I run a TBI 4.3 in my ranger. It is simple and cheap to fix. Doesn't require a lot of fuel pressure. They are just simple and reliable.

That said, I believe I am throwing one of the 5.3's that I have lying around in the ranger over the winter. I wouldn't mind an extra 100 hp...

I ended going with the autometer adapter with the autometer probe to use in the spare port on the passenger head. I tapped the oil ports for the op as well. I heard alot of headache regarding the dbw and supposed safety issues offroading if it fails and drives you off a cliff... so with dbc i made my custom cable with about 10 bucks of stuff from lowes. I ended up going with a standalone harness from cp wire (they were the cheapest at 500 bones) vs the 250 to pay someone to cut down the stock harness as i didnt have the time to do it myself. Spent 75 bones for the computer flash - running brand new sensors and MAF and still gunna need a tune (so the guru's are telling me)

Never had an issue with my dbw (since 2011). But I an using a Mast harness, computer, and corvette pedal. Can't speak for the first gen pedal.

That's basically what I know from
Helping some friends. If you got an open engine compartment they are stupid easy. They do so many that one of my friends is gonna cut the harness down and drop the computer off at another friends house for him to unlock and delete what I don't need. Probably cost me some beer and a couple dinners and taking them for some hot Laps once it's done

Okay now that I'm home for work I'll better explain why I went with this motor over the tbi.
The jeep came with a tbi motor, it had been on a pallet on a shelf wrapped in plastic for a couple years. The throttle body was junk as well as all the accessories, and I still had to source a computer and harness either from a junk yard or aftermarket.

So factor in all that it's a no brainer to go with the 5.3, it's out of a truck so has all accessories up high and a truck oil pan and was a running motor until it was pulled last week after the truck was wrecked

DBW is just fine, just a little more wiring and making sure you get the right parts. The later model stuff is a little easier to deal with because it is all built into the pedal and TB. The earlier stuff is a bit more challenging because you have to make sure you have the right tac module and harness to go along with your pedal and TB and there are multiple different tac modules over the years.

I mis typed earlier it's a 02 so no DBW

Call PTC and they can build a converter to fit your stock flexplate and whatever transmission you are using for cheaper than all the spacers and new bolts, etc and new off the shelf converter.
