Back in June I posted about the county tax assessor re-evaluating my 1974 CJ-5 (Lil-RED). Reference: http://www.nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91072&highlight=lil+red

Well, It is now mid-September, and the evil tax man has just struck again by re-evaluating Granny at $10,900 and has sent me a bill for $75.21 in tax. :shaking:

I admit to being a bit PO'ed over Lil-RED, but in this particular case it's so damn stupid that it's actually funny. Tomorrow morning I will be calling them to make arrangements to take the old girl in for a personal visit. Stay tuned!

I wanna tell em if its worth so much damn money how bout they BUY IT for that price.

The tax on my jeep is almost the same as my (mobile home)property tax. Seriously.

:fuck-you:taxes

I would not say it was sold as scrap and then change the vin plate with another older vin and relist as a older vehicle so it would not be worth as much. Yes I did not say this. And yes I have never done this ever. Don't fight the problem, out smart it! This message will self destruct in 20 seconds!

Nah, the problem is that it's old. They're marking up the value because they think it's a collectible antique.

Also, $11k for a CJ is fawking nuts.

Just back from the assessor's office... I don't have the final figure on paper yet, but the lady (same one who checked the red jeep) reluctantly dropped the value down to $2,500. Based on that figure, the tax, with fire district fees, should come out to about $17 a year. Obviously I liked things just fine as they were before all this BS, but I can swallow a $17 tax a heck of a lot easier than $75. I'll post the final figure when I get it.

I bet the scratch you got at The Flats helped out, probably what lowered the value!

Yeah... I guess I owe you a coffee for that one... Huh?

I prpbably need to add that I put a couple nice little "boogers" on the side of the cab at URE on Sunday. It was a great weekend though! :)

Please explain your logic... if our ancestors had shared your ideals, we would still be kissing the Queen's ass.
Awesome!

Sometimes it works in your favor though. My 98 Trans Am which I have insured for over $20k is apparently worth $7000 to the state, and my taxes aren't that high on it because of it.

I hate paying property taxes on my vehicles though. You pay SO many taxes when it comes to cars. Inspection fees, license plate fees, registration fees, title fees, gas taxes, blah blah blah blah. Hell, I've driven cars that were worth less than the amount of taxes I paid on it through the year!

^^^Same here...my 77 250 is appraised at 25k, insured for 20k full replacement through Hagerty, yet the state says it's only worth $700. I believe I just paid $7.56 on it in taxes a couple weeks ago. That said...they say my 79 Bronco which is slightly modified is worth $800ish, and I paid $8ish on it. I'd really like to know how they come to these tax values.

My '66 Mustang was "reapprasied" by the county about 7 years ago at a value of $20k, at the time there was no glass in the car, no floor, no interior, and no drivetrain. I took it to the tax office on a trailer and asked them if they would like to buy it. Of course now it's worth somewherre in that general area so it stays indoors most days to prevent the tax man from reappraising it again. I like my tax value being $750.

35 years seems to be the magic number. Ben, I have a feeling that when 2012 and 2014 comes around you might get a big surprise if you still own those vehicles. :)

I like how many guys here like to gripe when they overestimate the value, but have no problem w/ the state undervaluing their property so they aren't paying their share.

For all those cases where they undervalue, they have to overvalue if it's going to balance out to be "correct" for the average.

Just pay what's fair.

Seems to me, since everybody has to have insurance anyway, the tax value should reflect what you have your vehicle insuraed for. Because that's onviously what it's worth to you. Think that's too high? Fine appeal - but don't bitch when something happens to teh car and you get a smaller payout.

I'll agree

I'll gladly pay what's fair, though after paying tax on fuel, parts, tires, not to mention the disposal tax after the sales tax on the tires, registration fees, inspection fees, etc. I feel my fair share was paid long before I got the property tax statement.

We are way past due on another revolution or cival war. I doubt it will happen as too many people are dependant on govt cheese, but eventually our society will collapse if drastic change doesn't occur.

To me a property tax on a car is legal theft. When you buy a new car you pay sales tax, that should be the end of it. Whats fair is never having to pay property tax on an item that instantly and continually depreciates. I understand property taxes on homes since that helps to pay for local services related to the property to help maintain it's value in the way of fire, police, trash, etc. What the heck does paying property tax on my cars do to help it.

Guilty as anyone... but I will still argue to keep my payments as low as possible.
