This sucks...New N.C. DOT Laws

the lift laws, tire cover laws, and lighting laws, have been in effect for ages already.....nobody enforces them, i remember reading the laws on petersens offroad .com like 3 years ago, that we had lift laws ( none over 3") and tires had to be covered....but no one enforces them.....although, i did have a state trooped tell me 4.5 years ago, that my tires had to be fully covered, as viewed looking vertically straight downward..... and i asked and he showed me the law in the book of statuets (sp?) he just said that no enforced those laws, and he wouldnt either.....just informed that it IS a law.....at the time, i was in my yj w no flares, 35x15.50's oon 10" wheels

I'm sorry, I don't see how that is relevant to the current post? Stillsays nothing asbout these alleged new issues.

Let's use that thing on our shoulders called a head here bubba...

The DOT has not updated that file since August of 2006 and these "new laws" are supposed to take effect August 1st 2008? Ok. In checking the entire site, I could not find any mention of any of these "new laws" anywhere. In two years, they have not changed the "book"? Yet last year I seem to recall hearing some similar crap about "new laws" coming out. Additionally, has anyone heard of let's say for example, WRAL broadcasting this info? Hmmm... seems like something a news agency would put up just as soon as they found out about it so that people could contact the state with any objections...
That and August is a mere 2 months away...

I am actually going to back away for a minute before I start ranting about the stupidity of some people...

I heard about this same stuff already, although I did not know it was going to happen this soon, or really at all. I thought it was still up in the air. I know the tire coverage thing is supposed to happen but the lift and tire size sounds like a bad idea for a law.

What problem is this helping solve?

I have spent countless hours searching the statutes and have still yet to find a law that prohibits me from driving tractor tires on the road . . . . . .

So do you do it?

how fast can the tractor tires hold up to?

It's supposed to keep the roads a little safer. Some people assume a large modified 4x4 was haphazardly slapped together in some rednecks barn and is not safe for the roads. While this is true some of the time, it does not represent the whole. But it wouldn't surprise me if we got slapped with this new legislature.

thats part of the problem, the other are raised COG more prone to flip overs, and the raised POI doing increased harm to other vehicles...

Oh grow up Ricky...if you want to be part of an adult conversation, act like one.

Back OT, a bill (house or senate?) has not been cited. We'd just like confirmation before we incite a riot over how an injustice is being done to us. Please use the site below to provide us a reference. I haven't seen anything yet.

Oh and Ricky...they would probably ticket you based on GS 20-122.1.

And just for the interested... the NC House/Senate only work maybe 6 months a year / and there are no major laws passed in the extra sessions, mostly little stuff.

They have not "met" in regular session since last fall (Nov maybe) and will not meet again until May. So "new laws" being passed is actually impossible until they reconvene.

House: Convenes Tue, May 13, 2008 12:00PM
Senate: Convenes Tue, May 13, 2008 12:00PM

sounds to me like a dirty little Aprils fools joke....how is this supposed to be a new bill and NO ONE other than CAS22 has heard about it????

JUST FYI: Last time this exact topic came up the ruling that states 9 something liek ) if your vehicle came from the factory with 4x4 then the 3" lift law does not apply

I asked a cop once and he stated the reason the claus about 4c4 was in there was for the farmers.. since they use them to go into the fields

No I havn't done it yet, it kinda requires that I have the Jeep actually running . . . . . . . :shaking:

What just cause I wanna run tractor tires on the road I can't be taken seriously? Gimme a break, maybe you wouldn't do it but doesn't mean I can't.

And nothing in that statute prohibits tractor tires on the road at all, just talks about tread depth and uneven wear/cracking/chunking/etc . . . .

The DOT has not updated that file since August of 2006.

And you're assuming that the DOT website will be in date. Hello, you think in two years NOTHING has changed?
Just b/c something hasn't been updated dosn't mean that nothing has changed in the laws.
My experience w/ state agencies is that they update ALL the public portals just about the time that things actually go into effect.
I'm just saying that posting up a lin kto what we already know, the standard inspectio nrules, dosn't really help.

Now I'm not arguing with you by any means - I'm still calling BS on this whole thing. Note that Cas, a frequent poster, has been conspicuously absent from reply. He's either packpedaling to find his "source", or taking a cheap shot grin at the commotion here.

I too am calling it bs. But what I was trying to point out (even though I had a few drinks and was not clear) is that some of those "new" laws were already listed in the 2006 write up.

I really should not drink and type... hell... I couldn't even count. :D

No its because you intrude on a thread topic and swerve off on a tangent. Just resist the urge to comment on every friggin' topic that comes along with whatever stray thought enters you head. :shaking:

"§ 20‑122.1. Motor vehicles to be equipped with safe tires.

(a) Every motor vehicle subject to safety equipment inspection in this State and operated on the streets and highways of this State shall be equipped with tires which are safe for the operation of the motor vehicle and which do not expose the public to needless hazard."

Not having a DOT stamp and not being rated for any speed greater than a tractor's would qualify as a 'needless hazard'. Very hard to defend in court. Especially when there are speed rated ag-tires available or suitable LT tires.

Well it was a related issue, but my tires do have a mph limit on the side wall I think its like 17mph, thats fine with me all I want to do Is cruise around anyway :driver:

But this isn't gonna be any time soon anyway, she's currently got no top end to her motor at the moment, getting ready for an upgrade
Rick
One more thing, Did you check the Feds for the regs on the tires? See the tire makers can't make a tire for 50 states and be different for them, so that is why they have the FED DOT to handle the tires, air bags, seats, seat belt, safety stuff..... That is why you did not find it in the state stuff you need to look in the Fed Dot book. Plus on the side wall of the tire it will list a max speed and say not for hiway use or not to be used on roads...... Thats a dead give away. If you don't have the $5k to fight the state or feds you may not want to play with them. They play a hard game.......

That law would kill this crap from riding around...

Ahhhh...so there is an UPSIDE anyway!!!

Oh yeah from idiots driving around in cobbled together junk without mudflaps slinging rocks and mud at every other vehicle on the road.

I for one have NEVER had mudflaps on ANY of the many trucks ive had....if people are going to drive close enough crap to fly up and hit their car....they f'in deserve it cuz theyre WAY too close

Some people assume a large modified 4x4 was haphazardly slapped together in some rednecks barn and is not safe for the roads.

whats wrong with a redneck building a truck in his barn? seems to me it would be better than a yankee that didnt know anything about vehicles tryin to build somethin in his driveway....sorry im a redneck and damn proud of it

Hell, i can get a sticker..... i dont doubt that most of us could if we tried just a little. The problem is when we start getting pulled over by every dickhead cop wanting to enforce the new fender coverage laws...... Then we can get fined for knowingly accepting a bogus inspection sticker...... this isnt about how we can try to cheat our way around it.....

thats nothing compared to what can happen to a licensed inspector and the shop he is stationed at....LOTS more trouble than ur 50 dollar fine....trust me

Duh, nah I didn't even think about that :shaking:

Holy crap...49 posts and only ONE mention of the big one for us..

§ 20‑135.4. Certain automobile safety standards.

(a) Definitions. – For the purposes of this section, the term "private passenger automobile" shall mean a four‑wheeled motor vehicle designed principally for carrying passengers, for use on public roads and highways, except a multipurpose passenger vehicle which is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off‑road operation.
