Tractor tech and Discussion

The new tractors are sure purty, but I will keep my 30 year old Ford 1720.

Following prices of tractors over the years, this is what I have learned about tractors.....buy something quality, hold on to it for a couple of years while the quality of the competition goes down.....and prices go up. Odds are good you will be able to sell it for almost what you paid for it.

Maybe it's all a wash in the end....but if I can get a decent percentage of my purchase price out of it, and only have to do basic maintenance to it, that is a win to me. I see a lot of RK, Mahindra, and Nortrac brand tractors listed for crazy high and crazy low prices all the time....and the ads never seem to come down. I track Kubota, Massey, Ford, New Holland tractor ads.....I think "they won't sell at that price"....sometimes hours later it is listed as sold.

I think currently anything that doesn't have emission is a hot sell, those in the know don't want to deal with emissions, or the newer electronics. Look at the farm auctions, OLD 4-5000hr machines are getting big money, its not just the big iron either.
I had my Kubota B2400HST up for sale a few years ago, I don't really "need" it and it was to finance other things and a Zero turn, i've still got it and will likely keep it. What I found was a lot of folk who think they want a tractor have unrealistic expectations of what they want and what compact tractor may do.

First off, a CUT is somewhat of a Swiss army knife, it can do a lot of different things, few can it do exceedingly well without patience and knowing the limitations of the machine. Most "Looky Loo's" don't.

Its got a loader...Will it dig ? That depends on the operator, it's not designed to have a lot of "break out" power for busting soil. if you're careful and can feel the machine, you can dig a reasonable hole in a reasonable amount of time OR fold the loader arms up like a pretzel and cry. It's called a "loader" for a reason. "oh...."

Its got a belly mower, how fast can it mow ? as fast as you're willing to endure the pain and damage. mine will mow in high range, is very uncomfortable as most yards (mine especially) aren't golf course groomed and smooth. Mowing fast in anything but short grass will leave uncut areas, trying to push thru taller at speed will bog the mower, sharp blades help, but you aren't gonna sharpen them every mow. "huh....."

Its got a 60" box blade, sweet ! except that just a bit to big for a 24hp tractor, it covers the wheel track well, but if there are roots, you don't have enough weight for traction to rip thru them in one pass maybe even several, also, a box blade isn't going to leave a prepared bed behind it in one pass, in 10 passes.... maybe......... "oh...."

and you though dealing with buyers of off-road stuff was interesting....

I messaged the guy I bought my kubota off of within minutes of it hitting marketplace. A quick Google search showed that he was asking 3g less than what the same tractor with comparable hrs were going for. He had cash in hand by 10am the next morning. It took me 6mos of searching to find the right one though.

I've had a Kioti DK40SE that I bought new in 2009. Never had a problem to date. I don't beat it but it's definitely worked and done what I needed. I don't know if their quality has gone up or down since 2009 so can't add much on what's on the lots today. However at the time I bought, I priced a similar HP Kubota and found price of the Kioti to be about 65-70% of the Kubota. Also found it to be a heavier tractor reflected in the rear end housing and front axle. The only issue I've had in 11 years is I replaced the battery this past spring and of course the normal fluid changes per schedule. Definitely less dealers around but I haven't needed one so kind of a moot point. So far so good. used to be built by Daedong in S. Korea. The same company owned bobcat as I recall at the time. For a period there were some white tractors built with the bobcat nameplate that were the same as the Kioti's. Their US headquarters is in Wendell, just east of the Raleigh beltline, not that that matters much but I did call them one time when I had a question about some routine maintenance thing and got to talk to a human in Wendell. Anyway, maybe worth a look see for consideration.

I don't know squat about tractors, but I need to learn.

Did diesel tractors have to add DPFs and SCRs in 2007 and 2010 like diesel road trucks and cars?

Are all tractors diesel?

I think tractors over a certain hp rating were required to add DPF.

Most newer tractors are diesel there may be some small tractors just over the size of mowers that are gas.

I finally picked my new kubota up after a 4-5 month wait in October.

I believe the emission cut off is 26hp or close to it. Every dealer I talked to tried to push me to buy a model under 26hp so I didn’t have to deal with it. Mahindra is one of the exceptions. They use the MCRD engine that I know nothing about but doesn’t need def or to re-gen. Above 75hp is also one of the steps for different emission requirements.

under 40hp does not have DPF, DEF but may have a catalytic exhaust depending on year of manufacture

search for Tier 4 engine standards, it will explain better than I want to. And be more thorough about it.

Anything you actually want to use for more than mowing should be diesel. The difference in even mowing with a 24hp diesel vs gas is quite noticeable. I would have a hard time going back to a gas machine.

What model did you end up buying?

If anyone is interested, I'm thinking about selling my 2008 L4400. 4x4, HST, canopy top, 45hp, 37 or 38hp at the PTO, 4x4, loader with skid steer style bucket detach, AG tires, 6 ft Woods bush hog, and a 6 ft Kodiak box blade. Low hours...somewhere around 450. Pretty sure it's actually less than 450 though. Zero emissions stuff. Since I've owned it I put in a new radiator, fuel cap, changed the oil twice, and fuel filter twice. Oh, and a new battery. Can and probably would deliver just about anywhere for the right deal.

It'll fire up and work all day right now. Honestly, it sits way more than I use it and I don't like for stuff to sit. Tough decision, but it would probably do better for someone else.

Damn...those little tractors are pricey! I'm only thinking about a few thousand more than that for mine.

@rockcity are you still looking for a tractor?

Yeah, the ad doesn't say what year it is, but it only has 138 hours on it, so it must not be very old.

My 2008 model had 329 hours on it when I got it in 2015. Sometimes they just sit a lot.

I want to say they only started making the 2601 in like 2017 or 2018. They’re pretty new.

That model is the same horsepower as my LX2610 but has a slightly smaller “frame” and tires as well as engine displacement but I think everything on it is laid out the same. Lever placement etc. I paid almost twice that price for mine this year with all the upgrades. I don’t think you can go wrong with it. So far I’ve been very happy with mine.

If I were still shopping I’d have a hard time turning that one down. The only kicker for me is lift capacity on the loader. I don’t think it can do what I’d need. Not sure what all you plan to use it for.

FWIW, I'm gunna start out asking about 20k for mine with everything and full of fuel. That may even include delivery.
