What happened in that van?

No one seems to know how 25 year old Freddy Grey ended up dead with a severed spinal chord.

Arrest video shows him standing and talking on the rear step of the paddy wagon.
His back wasn't broke, nor was his voice box shattered as he entered the van.

He was hand cuffed, and I'd venture to say he was not seat belted in.

My theory is....
Look on the dividing wall.. the one that separates the driver from the back. I'd say you'll find evidence that the deceased suffered from a severe brake check and collision with that wall.
Maybe the driver, wanted him to settle down and shut up or something and decided to slam on the brakes. Ole Boy couldn't use his hands for impact protection, and slammed awkwardly into the dividing wall, thus breaking his back.

Just my theory till the facts come out.

Can't stop watching this one.
 
Saw a paramedic do just that stunt once with a dude they picked up that was out of it from some kind of drug. He 'woke up' and was gonna kick the attending medics ass (i was riding for emt training and just observing. The driver looked in the mirror and I immediately knew his plan when he caught my eye. I braced as did the other medic and the driver locked the brakes from about 50 and said hoodlum hit the divider wall head first. Screwed him up kinda bad actually. But he rode quietly the rest of the trip.

well, i know that if i ever get arrested, the first thing im gonna do is scream "youre hurting me". just in case.

any number of ways, malicious and accidental, that it could have happened.

the link mentioned by ponykilr said they had to stop and put more restraints on him. my guess is that it happened there. he probably got dropped on the corner of the bench throat first, and probably with an officers weight on his back.

What I'm saying is 99% of folks have a better chance of getting gored by a pink unicorn than what happened. If a suspect dies in your custody, it is what's called a carrier ending move ,especially as of late with all the media attention going on now. I seriously don't think this was done on purpose or maliciously. At most it was likely a non cooperative suspect, and a brake check that went to far.

You're at least four eight times more likely to be killed by a police officer than you are to be killed by lightning.

The numbers are probably worse than that, but data on killings by police is not good.
 
That statistic would be much different if we had as many dumb asses out in fields holding 40' sticks of 1/2 inch copper pipe during thunder storms.
Which is pretty much the same thing as fighting with a police officer or going for his gun or running from a LEO, and resisting arrest.
One might just get wet from the rain, but you are dramatically increasing your odds of getting fucked up.
Am I wrong? Please correct me if I am.
What we have here is a segment of society that thinks it can get away with doing some pretty stupid shit.
I don't mean to detract from this fellow that lost his life in custody, it sucks for his family and any one that was involved in the situation.
But.......
Do stupid shit better expect stupid results.

Well let me rephrase my comment.
99% of law abiding citizens have a better chance of getting gored by a pink unicorn than what happens to this poor poor victim of police brutality.
