What speed is fast to you?

Just curious, some people can run 100mph and never let it bother them. Others seem scared at 65 on the interstate. How fast do you usually drive? How fast have you been? How far over the limit will you cruise at on the interstate? Have you ever owned a vehicle that you haven't come close to maxxing out? Just trying to figure out if i am inthe minority or majority. Not wanting to get into whats legal or not, just simply asking a question.

Me, i usually run 62-64 around my home out in the country. I will drive 75-80 on the interstate pretty much constantly. My highest top speed was on a cbr 600 f4--161 mph on the speedo. 135-140 in a car probably 4-5 times. Oh yeah, and my toyota will go 69-70 when it feels good.

i have been 145 mph in a stock car around lowes motor speedway
168 in my power tour camaro on the interstate
and took the same camaro to 204 sitting still on the chassis dyno down at CAM in durham if that counts.
i have been 180 on a gsxr1000 and it was awesome

to me, fast is anything over 130 in a car and 165 on a bike but for everyday driving, 9 over the posted limit is usually where i live.

Depends on the vehicle.. 90 in my 3500, but 120+ is when I'd put both hands on the wheel of the quattro or the Bimmers. My old roomie's Supra was a one-handed deal until 150..rock solid, and didn't feel like you were really going fast until about that speed.

On my last bike, 120 was where I felt it was prudent to tuck down..the feeling of "fast" was 140+.

(All on closed courses)

But on a daily basis, I'm a 5-9 over guy strictly.

The track time and schools I've attended have helped tremendously.. as did living in Europe.

Usually the posted limit and up to 8 over.
Fastest on the road was 180=+/-
Took a couple laps at LMS when it was CMS, 1st lap around 90, couldn't stay on the banking, car would only do 125 or so but we could ride the bank. no 3rd lap since we were told to leave!

I used to cruise 70-75 on the beltline..
untill the gas prices went up. and I calculated that the difference between 60 mph and 80 mph was a whole 90 seconds going from home to work

Now I cruise about 60.. and have found that I actually like it.. relaxing

i plead the fif..

i often find myself well over the posted speed limit, and yet still "riding with traffic" most of the time i cruize at whatever feels comfortable, but as i'm getting older "wiser" i have to force myself to slow down.(5-9 over) i've got other things to spend my money rather than lawyer fees.-->

on the bike, i've been fast enough to have the shift light come on in 6th, and that was "a plenty" fast for me.

fastest ever was 130ish in a vette (not driving)
fastest in the bronco was about 110 but the death wobble and bump steer scared the piss outta me.

Been 126 in a '96 Accord. (Roomates) Hit and expansion joint on a bridge and the car moved sideways. Slowed down after that. Went 136 or so in my red Bimmer racing a Z4. (That's Where it cut off.) Used to run well over the limit all the time, but have since slowed down to 5-9 over. Got my last ticket Mar 10 of the year before last. A record ever since I been driving. Usually got one a year or so.

I actually hate to admit to doing things like this, but back in my younger days, you know like 3 years ago, i pulled my 16 foot tag a long trailer 103 down the interstate with 3000 lbs peice of equipment on the back. Definetly not smart, but can't change it now....the girl in the 86 cavalier actually thought she was faster than that big truck pulling the trailer.

The cummins loves anywhere between 70-100 just pulls like freight train at those speeds.

I guess I was poor growing up so fast for me was only about 120 in my Pontiac, Bonny sleeper. I made a turning point when i got into jeeps. It was a major change in my life to allow me to play and have fun yet not kill myself..

Times have changed and i like to do little things like drive the speed limit, at all times. Driving the same route to work gives you plenty of chances to make subtle improvments in using the least amount of throttle to get from point a - b while conserving gas.

Seriously if you think about how much time you save going fast (on a road trip) then factor in the time wasted by taking a 20min pit stop. Your not really ahead.. Now i try to do more plannig on where/when i stop and minimize the delays and have alternate routes avaliable where i can.

Also I find that going 65 i usually don't have to pass many people and in fact requires less attention and i can usually drive many hours longer than if i were going faster requiring more of my attention.. This is helpful when Im usually driveing somewhere after an already long day at work..

just my .02..

128 once on abernathy's f4 on hwy 485 right outside campus, but since i drive the old yoter, the 87' does 75 on cold mornins, and sometimes 80 draftin off a big rig

160 on the autobahn (i was riding) in my dads BMW, when i had my 325 i was usually doing 9+ over the speed limit. now with the sammi its more like 9 under and im on the floor :flipoff2:

Fastest was in a drag car at a little over 200. Usually drive +8 to +14 depending on traffic. On my bike i tend to cruise a little faster and occasionally tap 130-140 but only for a few seconds, my wallet can't afford to get caught at those speeds. But i've never maxed it out.....probably the scariest was getting the shakes around 135 across a bridge.

first time I ever went 100mph I was 14yrs old in a friends '70 Mustang( he was 19 at the time), flying down the highway, clang clang clang.......... we both turn white as sheets, stopped the car, shakin like hell, raised the hood, The air cleaner cover had floated up and forward into the fan. scared the hell outta both of us.

Myself and another fellow got Yag and one of his Zuk's up to 70mph on I-40 one night on the way to a trail in western NC, I was in the lead in my Runner, Frank was tailing in his Excab Yota, Yag and the Puke were between us in the draft. Carried him for about 4 miles before things got a little crowded (traffic) and we had to back down. ( " Umm guys, this is cool and all but......")

Had 2 motorcycles ('79 Yam. XS 1100 Special, slight mods, '83 Honda CB1100F SS, many mods) would usually do a speed run between towns once a week, 130mph was fastest indicated speed, never had an official clock, funny how those bikes are the only vehicles I have never had tickets on.

Hey,

hmmm, my '92 Grand Am topped out at 110mph. my '96 XJ topped out around 118mph. borrowed my sisters '99 Grand Prix GT, it pulled nicely till the gov. stopped me at like 108?mph. that car could go a lot faster.

a buddy has a '04 Chevy 2500 TD with a reprogrammer, 9" lift and 37"s = we were pulling away from a Civic at ~120+mph at 4am one night on a trip to TN. that was a fun trip.

and my best friend's first car was an '86 Dodge Diplomat 318 V8 . . . i think we got that thing up to 110mph, lol. i wasn't even 16 yet and my buddy had only been driving a month or two. it's amazing he and i survived those early years.

ohhh, and i "might" have hit 65-70mph once in my CJ.

but honestly i haven't driven anywhere near those speeds in a long time. i'll do the typical 5-9 over on the beltline. when i was 16-18 i was fearless, but these days i've lost my nerve. instead of gunning it and cutting between cars like i used too, now i generally opt to slow down merge between traffic. guess i'm getting old, lol.

bigmac

i love me some speed:

'92 YJ: I've seen the speedo at 85.. so a little over 90 (the speedo is very wrong)

'77 Vette: 110 mph. cannot really go faster right now. the steering column was shaking a few inches back and forth.

In my dad's

'04 Z16 Vette: 130 didn't go any faster. could have but cannot piss off the old man

He just got a '06 Z06 Vette. i've riden in it once. that thing is insane. 0-60 in like 3.5 sec or somethin. tires wider than my jeep's... its bad ass. but i'll never get to drive it :(

Whose car was that. There aren't too many 200mph 1/4mi cars around here, maybe I've seen it.

Hmmm lets see 7-9 over the limit usaully and on the interstates 75 plus..no less< just follow behind someone that is speeding about 100-175 ft and let them get the tickett> as far as the fastest is 195 plus on the bike and in a car bout 165 <my buddy's mustang clocked at 158 once we were slowing he wasn't a happy camper> my hemi truck 115 havn't pushed in no further <no need to in a truck>

i have done 160 in my old acura.

bout 150 in my dads old ZO6

and 145 on a steet bike..

back when i was youger and stupid i used to be all about speed... after several trips to court i relized i was gonna either be dead on in jail.

so now i have a TJ that bearly goes 100 down hill with the wind :flipoff2:

150 in my '87 supercharged MR-2, about all it would do.

140 or so on my '84 Honda Sabre 1100, not near what it would do. I think that was 4th gear, was a 6 speed. It would get you there so fast you didn't have time to think about it. But I usually just cruise on bikes, too dangerous.

130 or so in both my Turbo Supra and the 3000GT I drive now, just not interested in knowing how fast they would/will go. Guess I'm getting mature (egads). But I still love the twisties :smokin:

EDIT: Well after I think about it.....wrecking one of my MR-2's (had 3) at 140+ probably has a lot to do with why I don't care for top end anymore. At least not on country roads. Maybe on the interstate or a track.

The difference between 120 and 170 is almost nothing on a bike

Ive done +/-170 on my CBR1100XX down at an old airport in Florida when we rode to key west

The speedo's are generally off on motorcycles, PLUS my head was vibrating from the wind making it blurry

The GPS said highest recorded speed was 168, but that was on Brian's bike and I ended up passing him

Wasn't scarry

On my TLR (seen here getting ready to blast by a control rider on a ducati at CMP)

I was doing around 160 at VIR on the straight and that DID scare me

Mainly because it's a blind hump and you have to hit the hump and go right into what looks like a building at that speed

I'm terrified of speed in a car/truck

Now ain't THAT odd

i won't lie, i drive like a bat out of hell everywhere and probably don't deserve to have a license. i'm 25 and still haven't been able to shake those 16 yr. old driving habits. fastest i've been in a car is ~165, on a bike ~150.

When driving I generally add 9 mph to the speed limit. If there were no speed limits I'd go about 100 mph on the highway. Sometimes I actually go the limit if I'm not in a rush just to save on gas.

The fastest I've been in a car was 120 mph in my brother's Datsun 280Z. (a long time ago) The fastest I've ever been period was on my Ducati at about 135 mph. The bike was just fine, the scary part was that I wasn't sure the road, roadkill, etc. would all stay safe.
