Just curious as to what all is needed to pass inspection for a rig that is bare minimum. It's titled as a 74 cj5 so i know it doesnt have to pass any exhaust requirements but I'm curious as to what it needs to pass the inspection. I know I need a windsheild, a rear veiw mirror, at least one side mirror, and lights, is there anything else I'm missing?
Thanks

**Edit: are wipers required?

Call your local dmv office and ask the inspector.

actually, it does have exhaust requirements. a visual inspection will be made to ensure that it has a cat since it came with one from the factory. it doesn't have to work or have any guts, but it has to be there.

all functional lights.... seatbelts.... wipers.... no more than 6" taller than stock including any lift gained from oversized tires.....horn..... no bad leaks (brake fluid, etc).... good tread on tires.....

common sense shit....

if you think you need it to pass, you probably do....

Wipers are only required IF you have a windshield, and no, a windshiled is NOT required.

Where do they put the inspection if you don't have one? The reason I ask is I sometimes take mine off to keep it from being busted.

either you make a mount with a piece of plexiglass and attatch it to the vehicle or some inspection stations have stickers with adhesive on the back side ( they are available, most places don't bother with them, I beleive it's the same sticker used on trailers )

when I went thru the inpections class, this was discussed and these were the answers given.

i always thought a windshield and wiper(s) that would would make the full motion and return to the parked position were required.....

is the windshield thing a new change or has it been like that?

A windshield has never been required and wipers must clear the windshield without streaks. Also, the stickers with sticky on the back side are also used for motorcycles so if you can find a place that does those... Good luck.

You won't be needing a cat if its a 74 CJ-5

hell a bone yard will give you a horn, and a 1.00 toggle switch and you are good there...

Without a little more research, I am going to only advise that you check into the cat advice you were given in this thread. I wont contest that if it came from the factory it has to be there. But I do not THINK a 74 CJ came with a cat....

Ok I answer a phone then come back and rengade beat me to it.

Wow, i thought having a windsheild was a def must, but then I guess motorcyclists don't have them. Does that just mean its illegal to drive in the rain without one?

The horn won't be bad to install, i'm just mad at myself cause I know I had one and probably threw it away,

As far as the exhaust thats what a buddy of mine who does all my inspections told me, I'd take it to him but he's all the way in Mooresville, and I'm up here in raleigh so I gotta get it inspected up here unless I wanna trailer it down to Mooresville.

If it doesnt have the UNLEADED ONLY filler neck, it didnt have a cat...assuming all your junk is factory original. The lead would kill the cat. Also, if it had a cat, it should say somewhere under the hood or on the dash vin-sticker CATALYST.
They tried to tell me my '77 needed a cat, but the vin-sticker on the dash clearly says NON-CATALYST. The inspection guy said good enough for me...

IN 2 years, you won't have to have it inspected.:flipoff2:

actually ( i think ) right now the LAW specifies a DATE 1970.. not how many years old it is.. so unless this changes he will need to keep getting inspections..

when the vehicle becomes 25 years old it is now exempt from state inspection.

Edit: Sorry I meant 35 years. I am excited I dont have to inspect my 72 cutlass this year. My rithmatic anit what it used be.
