Axle pulled. Ready to start on new housing.
Still need to wire up 220 in the garage though.

IMG_0665.JPG

Took a couple better pics of the housing.
Noticed that it tweaked it enough to pull away from the 3rd member. That's why it was leaking so bad.
The old housing was pitted badly so I think a new solid one with some extra reinforcements should hold up fine.

New housing :smokin:

Unless that's just an awesome coat of paint on it, where in the world did you find a 9" housing that clean? My '85 van width 9 I thought was, but yours is just flat out illustrous.

It's painted... lol
I'm gonna have to strip it all off to weld though. Oh well!

Been a busy weekend.
Managed to cut all of the brackets off my old axle to reuse them.
Ended up cutting the tubes off the old 9 inch to get my anti wrap and brake brackets off.

@hurt4x4 came down to help out again.

Housing was hiding a little rust under the shiny paint
The new anti wrap bracket is tied into the tube and the center housing now. Should be good to go.
Finally cleaned up my brake line mess as well.

I started plating the back when I ran out of wire.

Should get it all done for fall crawl.

Got her ready for fall crawl.

Had a few issues on and off the trail, but nothing that stopped me from having a great time.

Tow rig needs some work. Puking oil out of the back of the head, but it made the tug home... only used 1.5 gallons of oil round trip.

Ran off the road at camp and broke a leaf spring. Almost turtled into the creek...

Fan decided to come loose from the radiator. Had to put my old road sign back in and run it with no hood to stay cool.

I learned the value of a relay. Burnt a switch up.

Made it through lions den with some damage of course. I'll try to get some pics and videos up soon.

Your rear end looks good...

You sure it's the back of the head and not the weep hold in the back of the valley? My bet is turbo pedestal or something in the HPOP reservoir. Had to do both on my '97 and '02 7.3s

This is the only place I can find. The firewall behind the head is covered in oil.

This is the plug on the back of the head.

I tried to smear RTV over it as a temporary fix and oil spewed out and bubbled it up.

Got the new plug installed.
You an see how tight it was and all the oil it blew...

Here is a pic of the old one.
I guess that little messed up place on the o ring leaked that much?? Seems crazy.

It doesn't take much at 500 to 3000 psi, lol. That much damage on a 6.0 usually makes it hard to start if itll start at all, and all their high pressure system is inside the engine making finding the leaks much harder than this.

Nice YJ. I'm concerned about that anti-wrap bracket on the axle housing. The gussets you put on it run side to side, I think a lot of the load that bracket sees is fore and aft though. I would suggest you wrap a gusset down the back of the bracket around the tube.

The gussets are angled back. They tie the bracket into the axle tube. The housing on 9 inches is pretty thin.
The tubes are thicker.
Also, the metal on the back with the holes punched acts as a strap.

I like the idea of wrapping it around the tube though. We thought about it, but I think the main reason it broke before is because the housing I had was pretty rusted out.

May or may not go to RBD.
I will be making one run to URE before they close.
Then it's time to chop this thing up.
I'm excited.

Next on the agenda:

79 ford HP kingpin 60 front
14 bolt rear
T18/205 combo
1350 shafts
Links in rear
Leafs up front still for now
Replace half of my rusty frame

Still gathering parts and deciding on wheelbase, gearing, etc.

As of now I want to go long at 118-120 but I hope I don't regret it later on.
I want to do most of my stretching in the rear.
One day this thing will have a chop top YJ truck cab and a small bed on it.
I want to go the 42-44 range in tires.

With that wheel base, I'll need to have a big tire and a decent belly height.
I want it to still look lower than a typical jeep though with the chop top.

Probably gonna run 5.38 gears

Can't wait to start this next phase.

There are a number of folks running that wheelbase and it works well. 20-25" belly height seems to work good with that wb and tire size. 5.13-5.38 seems to be a good ratio also, and will give you options for engine/trans/tcase down the road.

Yeah, I've been reading a bunch, so it should work out fine. I've got 39.5 iroks now, so that's gonna suck at that wheelbase, but im not worried about tires until I finish the big stuff.
I'm just using what I have sitting around right now.
Ballin' on a budget.

I really need to change the name of this thread.
I made it thinking I'd change the name later on, but nothing has come to mind.

So I pulled a 5.3 today from the junk yard.
It was in an '04 Yukon.

They didn't know the mileage cause the dash was gone when they got it.
Wiring harness was gone as well.

It's dirty and corroded from being up north, but there wasn't much wear on the gas/brake pedal or seats. I think it's fairly low mileage but we'll see.

Also grabbed a couple driveshafts from a 1 ton ford.

RBD was a huge success for me. (Not really for our whole group though)

IMG_1234.JPG

I loved how my jeep performed.
I am really tempted to just wheel this thing as is... but I want a change.
I didn't have to pull any cable.
I didn't break anything.
I did not run hot.

I did not get very many pics though...

I made it up the race hill that I saw a few bouncers roll down back in April...
I was pretty pumped about that. Scared, but pumped.

I almost rolled backwards a few times apparently.

This is part of the reason I want to go to a longer wheel base.

I got in my buddies juggy and we went up the same race hill with a little too much speed. We rolled 2.5 times back down and ended up in the ER...

It was fun, but we both got concussions and he needed staples in his head. Broke his knuckle and tweaked his whole buggy.

IMG_1209.JPG

You can see how tweaked his front tube frame is in the pic above.

Blood stained roof...

IMG_1205.JPG

They spelled my name wrong... oh well

IMG_1233.JPG

I crawled Moonshine canyon with ease, which is a fun trail. My favorite there.

I rolled it on little ledge. Trying to crawl it slow at an angle.

IMG_1235.JPG

Our buddy Charlie broke the piece that holds the 4 speed to his 205 in half backing off the trailer.

Pulled it and got it welded back. Held up all weekend.

Saw this rig again, which is inspiring me to get going on mine now.
Love it.
Looks like he bent his frame a little though.

Damn dude glad ya'll are safe. Looks like it was a hell of a time.

What hill did you go up/roll down, left or right?
