Police Body Cam Vid Shows 'Execution' of Daniel Shaver, Officer Found Not Guilty

Not guilty.
No punishment.
Despite weeks before this murder he was previously admonished for excessive force in another arrest case.
Dear old dad was a retired officer as well and headed up the internal affairs unit.

Not all cops are bad. Not all cops are bad. Not all cops are bad.
The ones that are can do more damage than the good ones can fix.

The officer clearly stated if you reach behind your back again I will shoot you. He reached behind his back and he got shot:confused:

I'm not really sure what the tactic of having him crawl was either

That was f’ed up. If a soldier in a combat zone did that he’d be up for murder. Not much gets my heart going these days, but that got my blood pumping. Tense situation.

This seemed so absurd, I had to google it to see if it was even real. I don’t understand why the officer was so aggressive and stuff. The people looked like they just rounded the corner on the way out casually. They didn’t pose any threat and that officer was being ridiculous.
I get you have to be on guard and ready for anything, but they could have walked up and made sure he didn’t have a weapon while he was face down on the floor.

It seemed to me that they had the guy so scared and shook up he was terrified and couldn’t follow the officers orders to a T and the officer didn’t like that he wasn’t being obeyed.

With the fact they were responding to someone having a gun and pointing it out a window the cop was reacting in a way as if the suspect had a gun. I can completely understand that. I can also see the justification after he reached back behind him *while crawling* with one hand like he was reaching for a gun. It completely makes sense. You dont get to *wait* see if they really do grab a gun or not.

However. The most screwed up part I dont understand is the tactics in this case. He should have kept him on the ground, quiet and hands in front. He should have waited until a team circled the hotel and approached the suspect from behind and secured him that way. There was also absolutely zero tactical benefit from having the suspect *crawl* towards him. It would have been better tactics to approach after they secured the girl.

If i had been him I would have laid down with my hands outstretched and never complied with a command. Just state im not comfortable doing that. I will wait until you have as many people with you as you want until you feel comfortable but im not moving an inch.

Tough situation, that guy was terrified and at the same time I'm sure that officer wanted to go home that night! With the call being about shots fired out windows after vegas incident I feel like they def took to strong of an approach for the situation at hand. all they know that coulda been a diff room the shots come from and they were just ppl stayin at the hotel!!! Who knows? Sucks eithwr way tho

This was 2 years ago and there were not reports of shots fired, just of someone brandishing a weapon through the window

I agree 100% with @ckruzer , he deserved to be shot for reaching behind his back (should have been shot the first time he did it when he was on his knees) BUT the cop was definitely on a power trip with all the Simon says crap, hopefully he never has a job as a LEO again, I can't imagine who would hire him after that video...

There were 5 armed officers in that hall way.
Only 1 pulled the trigger.

Tact was off sure...but a distinction with no difference. Whether it was the most cordial of interactions or this scenario, if a cop says don’t reach behind your back or you’ll get shot, don’t reach behind your back. Regardless of how scared I was, I’d try to make not reaching for my back a top priority. And again, living another day, getting that cops job and fatten my bank account.

The guy was reaching to pull up his shorts that were falling off as you can see in some of the pics of him dead on the floor. Was that a dumb thing to do? Yes it was but the guy was terrified by the psycho pointing a AR 15 at him yelling at him that he is going to kill if he makes a mistake. All he had to go is have his backup help secure on the floor while he was already down. That crawling BS was nothing but a power trip. That cops needs to be in jail becoming somebodies bitch. I can’t help but to think about what that guys parents and family must be going through. If I was that guys dad I am not sure I could prevent myself from taking justice into my own hands at this point.

I just watched the video again. The woman in the video was able to understand and follow the commands very well. If you watch closely she even does the crawl thing appropriately. Both hands up shuffling forward on her knees. The dude in the video, on the other hand, is defiant from the get-go. Multiple commands to stop moving, to assume stated position.

I previously said defiant but after rewatching the interaction again it is hard to tell.

Yep no surprise..a POWER TRIPPIN PIG is a power trippin pig, period!! A officer is a officer! Same job, 2 totally different people in my eyes. 16yrs I haven't dealt with cops but before that had more encounters than I care to tell. I know when you ARE faced with the trippin pigs, you gotta listen no matter what, even if its b's cause they will shoot or abuse their badge(especially with the amt of shootings these days). I hate people loosing their lives to this crap but people should also smarten up and follow orders till everyone is calmed down.

The guy flat out wasn't listening to instructions. Granted, the instructions were ridiculous and way too specific given the emotional distress the guy was in. I really think the cop was literally trying to make it impossible to follow instructions just so he could shoot the guy.

This^^

I get it, the guy wasn’t listening and reached behind his back twice. But the commands were ridiculous and the cop has such specific instructions. Like he was waiting for him to screw up so he could pull the trigger. Like Ron said, only one cop pulled the trigger. I think he wanted to pull the trigger. I think he should be locked up right now too, getting his butthole stretched out.

Shitty SOP having someone crawl towards you. First rule is to create space to work. Why let someone close the distance. One guy pulls security and the other handles him while he’s face down. You and your partner position yourself in a way that if the guy gets combative a shot can still be taken even if your partner is hands on. I’ve witnessed cop training and even swat teams don’t impress.

And btw @Jeff B and @CasterTroy have made this point numerous times, but greedy example of how "funny" accessories seem mighty damning after the fact

Something none of you mentioned. Maybe you didn't know.....the report I saw also stated the guy was drunk as HELL

Now, the shooter probably didn't know that, and not sure it mattered to him. But how many of YOU could follow instructions that crazy and do so while not getting distracted by your falling shorts while drunk as hell?

There's no excuses here. For his death, for his actions or for the verdict. EVERYONE loses. I told my wife though, thank GOD he wasn't black

you're a fucking dick

the kid was scared as hell and probably having some kind of an anxiety attack. Hell, the first time he put his hands behind his back, looked to me like he was trying to go into a cuffed position or maybe as said, pull his britches up. either way, it was a wrong move.

The cop, he was acting like a circus trainer. "on your knees, hands up, do a back flip, land on your head, crawl." His directions were for his safety I get it. however in that tense situation I feel like the orders should have been one at a time, second order only after the first was complete correctly. The cop barked and confused the kid. Kid was easily confused due to being so scared.

both made mistakes and the kid died.

Should the cop go to jail for trying to do his job? maybe for being such an over achiever... NO.

However he should never be on the street or in another position with gun over another person like that.

The police are not your friends, they are there to catch you breaking the law, entrap you. Never talk to the police.

I feel like if that was my son, i would kill everyone close to that cop. Am i any better than him? No. But i think that is justice.
