Cheapo Tow Rig project

I should have a couple paint guns, and my compressor works.

Hmmm. It is because of you I have this here shell. Seems I owe you some drinks for that, and perhaps more for a Saturday of laying down some paint? How bout some Red Oak and I’ll bring the paint?

Sounds good to me.

You can get the whistle back with some whistle tips!

My Lord! these people live among us! Whoop Whooo! Thats kind of like speakers on the outside of the car, I see that a lot around Greensboro.

Imagine the sound of this 6.0 "turnt up" around 4k with the jeep behind it going up fancy gap and that whistle thing :driver:

I'd just like to note that this was going on in 2002-2003, about the same time Ford was starting development for the 6.4L diesel exhaust tips...

My buddy has an ABS scanner and checked it out. C0550 was the code, he cleared it and it can back right away. I have already cleaned the ground for it. From what I read it would not even be able to run a self test and throw that code if it was a bad ground so it means the module is bad. I’ll just learn to live with the light I reckon, I’m not really willing to spend the money to replace it. I rather have a touch screen radio than the light go away :D
Go to ModuleMaster

Thats not for whistle. They started doing that because the exhaust temp of the diesels during Regen is extremely high, those little vents help pull surrounding air into the tip while running which helps pull the temp down so someone doesn't burn their leg if they stand beside the exhaust while the truck is in Regen.

I will check it out. I found some places where I can send mine in for $50 and they will fix it. I also found videos on how to do it myself, it’s apparently super common. Some of the solder joints go bad. It is something I plan to address a little later.

Are seriously being serious about a whistle tips post?
And you're both wrong. It's for the EPA. Best way to get clean exhaust emissions is to pull in some clean air! The solution to pollution is dilution! :flipoff2:

Just adding some tech, it may be for dilution I was just saying what I had read.

I need to put plugs and wires, fuel and air filter on this thing. That would have been the responsible “adult” thing to do. But I was very tired of riding around listening to my phone and Bluetooth speaker shoved in this hole.
As bad as I wanted a double din touch screen with CarPlay and a back up camera, I settled for this Pioneer from Walmart and threw it in today. It does have Bluetooth so I can stream Pandora. Only to discover that the front speakers don’t work at all. I’ll throw some speakers in there soon.

Hit up Crutchfield and get some DS series Kickers. Great sounding, affordable, and they come with the mount/wiring adapters.

Took the family out in the jeep at Uwharrie today. It was very crowded!

The truck does really good. I’m sure it’s gonna be slower going across Fancy Gap and some other pulls but for the most part it really does excellent as far as I’m concerned. There is however a few things I need to address before I tow to PA with it.
1) I HATE the mirrors on it. They are going to be replaced right way!
2) The AC does something weird. The fan is staying on but it does not blow consistently. I think a vacuum controlled door is closing blocking the air. I hear the fan, and even turning it up barley changes the air flow. I believe it is an easy fix.
3) The stupid CEL came back on today, even after I had the CKP re-learn done. I thought that was the reason for my random misfire. I will leave the light on and have my friend scan it with his Snapon scanner. I still need to do the tune up anyway.
4) my trailer brake work great when I use the manual button, but I’m not sure they’re working as they should by the pedal.

I also need to get that console out of my buddy’s parts truck cause after about 30 minutes of no where to put my arm I get irritated.

Hit up Amazon and get some tow mirrors. Best thing you'll ever do. If you can live with the glass being a little shaky, you can get a pair of them for like 150 bucks. Factory tow mirrors would be nice, but they're hiiigh dollar.

Interested to see what codes are being thrown.

How is the brake controller wired up? These have a nice plug and play deal where you can just get the wiring that plugs right in to the panel to the left of the brake pedal under the dash and right in to the brake controller. Then it functions through the factory 7 pin plug. It could either be the way it's wired, the controller itself, or there are a handful of trailer related fuses in the under hood fuse panel. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

@Croatan_Kid it is using the plug. I will mess with it this week. I have a lot to do to the Jeep as well so I will be busy! Looks like I need to add a power steering fluid cooler to the jeep, and it needs to visit the exhaust shop for clearance issues.

I was planning to order these mirrors.

@Tails it was nice meeting you. I enjoyed it. I would have never guessed that was Steve’s 2nd time ever going up Daniel.

Dang...they're even cheaper than they used to be!

Filled the truck back up again from 1/2 tank. According to the math I averaged 9.2mpg!!

85 of the 146 miles driven had the jeep behind it. Down 109 and back, average speed 65. Took 15.9 gallons. A tune up is in order for sure.

From Rock Auto with all AC Delco stuff it will cost me $100. My trip next months is 1000 miles, if I net 1 MPG increase it would be worth it. Hoping for 2!

If I’d bought a Cummins I would have gotten three times the mileage, and had tow mirrors.

your miledge sounds about right. Ole unit 10 gets 9 mpg pulling Nellie Belle up to UNF. Fourth gear or fifth...87 or 93 octain makes no difference and this is with a fresh motor.

Maybe. My Cummins doesn't get much better then that.

Hell mine has tow mirrors and I get 10 loaded with the camper. My 7.3 got better mileage.
