App State - ECU, Sept. 5th 09!

Everyone thinks our Michigan win was a fluke and a one hit wonder. How does everyone explain three consecutive National Championships? Were those flukes as well?
I really hope this game becomes a rivalry because I think these two schools have some of the most dedicated fans of any school in NC. Also most of our graduates stay in the state, so the fan base is huge.
I have to admit that I like ECU and always pull for them, EXCEPT for this game hahaha!
 here is to a good game
So how do you explain that ASU was dominated by the worst NC State team of the decade, when they were defending 1AA champs, and didn't lose a game the rest of that year, either?

You never had even a remote chance in that game, couldn't hardly get the ball to mid-field. State ran the ball almost the entire 2nd half, because they didn't need to score anymore.

Appy is a great 1AA program, that got a fluke win at Michigan.

But you wouldn't win a single game in the ACC. As I said above, your best bet to beat a 1A team is for them to overlook you.

Oh lord, I am glad we can all talk about wheeling, because you guys are tiring me out with sports :D How about we wait til after the game and you guys can rag me all you want, if you win, and I will do the same if we win. Until then there is no hope for us not arguing.

Apples to oranges.
Pound for pound, I don't think you would be correct.
Appy State fans aren't talking pound-for-pound. They think they can line up with other teams in the state and beat them straight up. And they're wrong.

Look at Appy's record against 1A teams this decade. They beat Michigan (fluke), and Wake Forest in 2000, when Jim Caldwell was their coach. What a resume'.

They haven't even been close to being competitive in the rest of the games vs. such 1A powerhouses like Wyoming, Hawaii, and Kansas. Not to mention getting completely throttled by State's worst team of the decade, when they were the defending 1AA champs and that was the only game they lost that year, as they won it all again.

Now, I like Appy State just fine, and realize they are a good 1AA team, but some of their fans have been getting a little too cocky the last couple of years. Just settle down there, Beavis. Know your role. As a State fan, I certainly have no love lost for ECU, but they're going to smoke Appy. Only thing they might have going there is that it IS the first game of the season, and those tend to be sloppy. But they'll also have ECU's full attention, I'd think, because of their win vs. Michigan and it being the first game.

The game scares me but all trap games do. ECU is a very up/down team but a good one. We can manage to beat vt and wvu but choke against state like its a religion. ECU has a strong possibility to be the best team in the state this year. I think this year is going to be a polar opposite of last. Losses to vt and wvu cleaning up the rest of the season. We got entirely too cocky last year entirely too fast. With a veteran team like this I doubt they will make that mistake again. JW aka "WHITE BOY!" and stormin are back with some other key players. If some of our guys can keep their noses clean we should have a great season.

ASU's allotment sold out the first day. Looking online now, or maybe through ECU ticket office is the only way.

Well I am an App State alum and I AM talking about pound for pound.

With the recruiting that smaller schools naturally incur, I think it is great when App plays a 1A team and makes it a game. Statistically, eventually they are going to win some of those games every now and then. That is just the laws of probability at work. Plus, they have some fantastic coaches, probably better than a lot of 1A programs.

I'd be interested to see a 1AA program that has played some 1A teams as well as App in a stretch of a few years. For games that are supposed to be "giveaways," seems like they've done pretty good for themselves to me.

I went to that State game and I don't recall them being "throttled." They score was a deception for their playing, minus a few mistakes. Plus, that is the only game Edwards did not start and play the duration of the game.
No excuses though, because it was a loss. I didn't cry or anything.

We'll have to see. I think if they play well they can make this a game, inherently including the possibility that they can win. If they don't, it's good experience for the team to have in a year where they may be making a title run again.

Fairly cut and dry to me.

Mudonthetires:
You don't think Appy was "throttled" in 2006 vs. State?
Might want to check the box score:
TOTAL NET YARDS................133
Total Plays............................53
Average Gain........................2.5
NET YARDS RUSHING ............ 67
Rushes..................................37
Average per rush...................1.8
NET YARDS PASSING..............66
Completions-attempted.........5-16
Sacked...................................4
Yards Lost ..............................34
TOTAL TURNOVERS.................2
Interceptions...........................1
Fumbles Lost...........................1

If that's not "throttling" your opposition, I don't know what is. State barely even threw the ball, and I don't think we threw it at all in the 2nd half, because we didn't NEED to. Appy barely ever made it to mid-field. And this was done by a State team that went 3-9 and fired the coach that year.

Haha, you're smoking something. I guess State fans have to exaggerate to compensate for their lack of a program the past decade or so.

ASU - 133 total yards
NCSU - 242 total yards

Final Score:
ASU - 10
NSCU - 23

If beating another team by 109 total yards and 13 points is a "throttling" to you, do you need me to display how many times State gets "throttled" every year?
I'd be glad to. Wouldn't be much trouble, there's plenty of info out there on losses that would apply. :)

How about all the armchair quarterbacks go back to polishing their State Championship ring and re-livin the glory days and talk smack after the game when yall have a leg to stand on.

Appy only had 133 yards. State had 4 turnovers and STILL the outcome of the game was never in doubt. Appy had no shot at all, against the worst State team of the decade.
Again, look at the stats. Here's the most important one right here:

NET YARDS RUSHING 206 67

State didn't pass because they didn't have to, Appy didn't pass because they couldn't.

I don't care about State's other losses....that has nothing to do with the fact that Appy fans need to curb their enthusiasm a bit.....you have a fine 1AA program, but it's a 1AA program. 1AA can't compete with BCS programs. The record shows that.
Oh, and as far as our "lack of a program"? Yeah, we've been to 6 bowl games this decade, this year will be 7 if we go to another one. (and we should, since some have picked us to win our division)
That's with a coaching change, mid-decade. Yep, our program sure sucks.

That said, it wouldn't bother me one bit if Appy somehow beat ECU. But I honestly don't see them staying within 3 scores of the Pirates.

No team says "We didn't pass because we didn't have to." They beat them by less than 2 scores. I ASSURE you that wasn't their attitude towards it.

Either way, I could care less. Our 2nd string QB (the rest of the year) started against a 1A team that has MUCH superior recruitment.

You see it as they got "throttled." I see it as State couldn't beat a much smaller 1AA team when they didn't play well at all by even 2 TDs.

I couldn't care less about that loss. It likely made us a better team and helped us win that National Championship. I never said App is a BCS-quality football program, because that is unrealistic. You don't see me running around with a #1 foam finger screaming that App is the culmination of football domination.

Either way, I have no need to argue about it. I would rather win 1AA National Championships than struggle to try and finish .500 in 1A. ;)
