How much? Not kidding. Finished of course.

Damn. Not sure how to even answer that Travis. I'd have to think on that.

For all the garage hacks out there like myself with no cnc plasma table, or anything cnc for that matter, this is how I make these type panels. May or may not be the best way, certainly not the fastest, especially if you have OCD. (One of the many reasons it takes me so long to do shit).

If this doesn't interest you, or is to elementary, enjoy the pretty pictures. [emoji12]

Often I see cool shit, and I try to figure out how to do it with my limited tools. Again, there's probably a better way, but it's all I got...

Matt

Thanks buddy.

Someone on another forum asked about the process, guess it would be sensible to have more than just the pretty pictures.
Your stuff always looks great. So after the holes and the plasma, did you straighten the lines with a grinder, burr or sand disc?

BTW, Nice looking hole saw. Haven't seen one like that.

Won't it be great when they come out with hand held lazar cutters?
For real.

I straighten the lines (all marked with a scribe for true edge line) with the 3" roloc sand disk, if there's room, if not I use the carbide burr. (I try my best to design with room for the roloc). Then I use the round flap drum and/or the skinny sanding drum to get the finish uniform and square. Then I use a 3" coarse scotch brite disc to polish and clean the entire piece. Finally I run over with orbital and red scotch brite pad then acetone before welding.....yea, it's called OCD...I'm very particular about square, burr free edges.

The hole or slug cutters are from Van Sant trick tools. Very good cutters. I've done hundreds of holes over the 5 years I've owned them, purchased same time I bought their dimple dies. I've even hand sharpened the larger ones a time or two. I always use a cutting/tapping fluid. They work great up to 14 gauge, they get a little too hot on 11 gauge. Typically I'll mark 11 gauge with the hole saw on each side, then blaze it out with the plasma, and finish with the carbide and drum sander.

SM000 Slugger Sheet Metal Cutter Kit

I've recently acquired a mag drill that uses annular cutters that I need to get some bits for.

Matt

Btw, all that material is 14 gauge, including the square tubing.

Ive been using carbide hole saws for years. They are alot like those hole saws bit can be used on thicker metal. There a little costly at first but pay for them self in a very short time.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0185Z63HK?psc=1

Ive believe when you buy drill bits your not paying for the bit, your paying for a hole. If you buy a 2 dollar bit and get 10 holes out of it, but then buy a 10 dollar bit and get 100 holes out of it, the more expensive bit is actually cheaper.

Finished the other bed support and got started on the rear bumper today.

Rolled the .188 to match the curve of the tailgate, like the front and rails. Only thing left to do is cap the ends, and add a d-ring mount in the center, in the same style as the fronts.

I can't wait for you to get finished with this and see it out on a trail somewhere. If you want you can build me whatever you want as long as it half as badass as this is.

I'd be happy to build for someone else.
Are u using the current wheel and tire combo?
Yes, for crawling. For street or race, it will be 37 dot. So yes, I still have to purchase another set.
Awesome dude I wanna see those fox 2.5's sticking up behind the cab.
I'm always impressed seeing this kind of quality come from a 1 man band working with what tools he has.
Thanks Chris. Hopefully, next week be building trailing arms and mounting shocks.

Matt

This is the coolest mj build ever. I don't know how I've missed this thing till today , keep up the work, can't wait to see it done !

Color scheme?

I been imagining it in all different colors
For now, your looking at it. The patina is so perfect for Retro rat rod, rubbing compound and linseed oil on the body. Either mavcoat or sharkhide on the tubing. But, you know me, I'll change it up every couple of seasons.

Matt

Your attention to detail is top notch Matt. The little details and touches you put on this build (and every other one) is so far beyond what most people would ever do.

Unreal work my friend. Unreal...

This it without question my favorite build ever.

My friend and I were discussing it earlier tonight over some beers and decided you need one of these for stealth mode operation:

Thanks Falko. I'm glad everyone is enjoying it. I enjoy doing it. I do miss wheeling though. I spend a lot of time updating threads in four different forums, in hopes that maybe someone will have me build them something this involved. I like big projects with a lot of freedom. But they certainly aren't cheap, and take a lot of time away from everyday life.

When I finish a project, it doesn't take long for me to want another build to keep my mind busy. Guess that's why I always modified my buggy so often.

Matt

I understand bro.

Am I the only dude Who looked at this and thought: what the crap is this vodo....????

Then suddenly had an epiphany and said to self: this is going to be cool get off your lawnmower and finish it.

Lol. I've saved images and studied dozens of factory built and home engineered trailing arms; even spoke with Dan at ruffstuff for an hour or so couple Saturdays back, about his offerings.

Here is a screen shot of one (sorry i don't know who it belongs to), not exactly what I'm building but may give some definition to my design somewhat.

I had planned to buy a weld together kit, but none were short enough for my chassis layout, (40" heim eye to eye. ) After pouring over all my research, i choose to build something that I wouldn't have to outsource any work, like most of the build. The dom legs are 2"x.250, and the front leg will be slugged with 7075, like the rub rails. Outwardly they will resemble ruffstuff, camburg, or others like them. I will be making 3 to have a spare.

Over built-probably, heavy-sure, but I can assure I'm not the only one building this way.
