man that thing looks killer.

There are so many people to thanks for this build it's not even funny.

Again, Brandon and Scott at Rides of Conover have gone above and beyond. They fabbed some one of a kind tube fender for an XJ. You'll he hard pressed to fine another XJ with tube fenders of this caliber. Add on to that them having to deal with me calling weekly to see if the title for it has arrived yet so I can get it shipped.

I can't thank you guys enough. Amazing final product.

EDIT

If you look really hard, you might see come RCV's in the front.

If the Carabinieri don't approve this thing for road use, it's possible I might drive over the top of their Fiat and roll down the road anyways.

Lookin good man. Mad max :poop:

Finally got a shipping date. Being picked up Oct. 11, arriving in port (only 10 minutes from my house) Nov. 15. When it arrives it will have been 8 months since I last saw it. Bumpers, fenders, and axle shafts have all been added since I've been gone.

I will have to wire up some license plate lights, fix the turn single lenses and hope to god the shoddy LED wiring job I did holds up to pass inspection.

I will be running my two GoPro cameras the entire time from picking it up at the port to getting it inspected.

Let's hope there aren't any rogue waves that sink the transport.

Dang man that thing looks too good to wheel now! Such a huge change since the gulches. I hate I won't get a chance to wheel with ya!

Hey Chris-

You'll laugh, two weeks ago Bill hit the same tree you did at The Flats . Trail 10 hill climb, tree on the right side, it put a nice grapefruit sized dent in his hood.

He hammered it out, but we had a good laugh about the same tree snake biting another one of us.

I'm fairly sure that tree needs a name. I'd call it a ninja because it jumps out and kicks Jeep doors.

I'm driving along this weekend, ignoring basically all the signs on the side of the road (because I can't read them) when I see "Trial 4x4 --->" I almost put the Clubman in the ditch trying to get out of traffic and on to the side road fast enough. 4x4 is a universal term for "interesting."

I couldn't find where the sign went and the family was tired of driving around looking for a random 4x4 park, so we went home. Today I returned on my own to find the park.
Low and behold there is an offroad racing back basically in my backyard. Add to that, that there is a 1999 XJ in mint condition (needs oil sender or pump replaced) for sale on base for $200. Looks like I'm buying an XJ tomorrow.

Thats excellent!

Be careful what you are getting into with the $200 XJ. I had a friend with low oil pressure that ended up needing a new block, AFTER we went through the entire motor, rebuilt it, replaced everything, and had the block and head checked. Never could figure out if a port was blocked or if there was a crack somewhere. With that said, at $200, I'd still snatch it up in a skinny minute, but could be more than just an oil pump.

Just saw this thread, and I must say, I do admire your XJ. I have never been really a huge jeep fan (more of an odd ball rig if you can call a sas s10 that) but I love your jeep. Good luck with wheeling it in Europe! I will be watching!

Thanks for the warning. I figure for $200, I can race it once and have as much fun as possible. I'll get you to ship me your stroker.

Thanks. I'm starting to like the look as well. Will be better when I can actually wheel it.

Haha, sounds good. I just sold my D300, D60's, and 38.5 Creepies. Might as well sell everything else right?

I got tired of waiting for the XJ to arrive so I went out and bought a replacement rig. 2012 Cannondale Flash 29er 3. The only mod so far are Crank Brothers Eggbeaters (yes, I've already fallen over 5 times in two days from not being able to get unclipped). I'm racing in Iron Bike Italy 2012 (6 days of racing the Italian Alps, up to 180km per day). Anyone know anyone at Maxxis? I need a set of their MTB tires.

Well. Picked the XJ up Monday. An Italian friend knew a guy with a rollback tow truck that met me at the port. The Jeep barely fit on the tow truck and the guys had a fun time loading it up. We unloaded it at the MP station on base so I can begin the registration process next week.

Today I put license plate LEDs and hood lift struts on. Nothing major, but got to crack it up and drive it 500 yards for the first time in 7 months.

cool a trans atlantic crossing for a NC member and vehicle. not to sure that happens every now and then. Good to see you get to finally enjoy your XJ.

Turned out great!

Dude, when are you guys going to start putting out bumpers. These jokers are sick. One small suggestion, move the license plate holder from the end of the swing arm to the pivot side. This way wiring for the license plate lights is easier.

Turned out great!

Thanks for the driveshaft. No more teeth rattling vibrations at 30 miles an hour.

Well, good news, the Jeep passed inspection. The Italian tried to tell me he wouldn't inspect it because it wasn't "stock". I reminded him that he ok'd it based on photos 6 months ago, and we could take it to the base commander if he was going to refuse to inspect it. Then he tried to tell me the newish rear brakes were bad (he wasn't doing the test properly come to find out). He didn't test emissions, didn't notice the hazards don't work, and didn't notice the missing rear-view mirror.

Expect some wheeling photos this weekend. 8 months of waiting, I feel like a high schooler on his first date after getting his drivers license.

So, 4wd doesn't work. I had the tcase rebuild and SYE added the day before I dropped it off for bumpers. I didn't think to check that the tcase actually worked (I have a feeling it wasn't bench tested). I disconnected the linkage, and can only get it to move maybe 1/2 inch before there's a metal on metal ping sound (not grinding). Any thoughts? My son is super depressed. He's been talking about wheeling for months and we built of the idea of going this weekend. I might go hit some farm trails in "2wd, heavy right pedal and winch" mode. We live on a 500+ hectare farm, and the farm has a dozen tractors that can tug me out if needed.

Any thoughts?

2wd flex is the best I can do right now.
The front easily has another 4 inches of flex until it's stuffed.

The rear is stuffed. I have 4" bumpstops, but the wheel still rubbed in the wheel well. I'll have to make long stops I guess.
