Bronco #2 The wheeler

That’s why I didn’t want to get it professionally done. At this point I know I can always touch it up myself for $30 to do an entire panel. Looks good unmasked for the first time in a couple weeks. There’s a few runs and a rough spot or 2 but overall not bad for what it was.

Looks good you need to paint the grill back to white for the old school look!

We were debating that, ended up doing the solid color because there was going to be no other white on the truck so I felt it would look out of place. Black headlight bezels and trim pieces though to tie everything together.

Worked on the bronco the other day with a buddy. He ended up with an extra sniper EFI setup and is cutting me a hell of a deal on it so we spent the day getting it all installed and wired up. Was told over and over that I would have RFI issues with my HEI distributor but after getting it all setup, everything works great, no RFI no weird signals. Just gotta put some miles on it and let it learn now. I will probably still keep everything to switch over to carb in a box when I go out so that I'm not stranded if anything funky happens. No extra cost to me just 30-45 minutes to get it swapped over. Went on my first cruise with it to learn some and it did really well, handheld isn't reading correct though so just got a new one in today and will work on swapping that out tomorrow to see what its actually doing. But time to cruise it some until uwharrie for veterans day.

Got any pics of the install?

Plan to have it tuned. It will run good enough, but never run great without having someone, who knows what they are doing, to tune it.

This is the only photo I have right now. It was pretty straightforward though. I have the coil wire triggering a relay for clean switched ignition. I know I’ll probably need someone to do the finishing tuning but for now it runs as good if not better than the carb so I’m pretty damn happy. Going to start transferring the learn tables today and keep plenty of backups. Depending on how it acts on the trails I may end up resetting the wizard and have it learn crawling as a separate tune I can swap out when on the trails.

Sniper has been running great! Had to replace the fittings in the fuel pump, found out they were metric and while the NPT fitting fit the thread, they wept fuel slightly. Not even a drip but I could touch the threads and come back with fuel. Got that repaired though and 2-3 learn to bases in and it's been a champ! It has me curious how accurate my mechanical gauges are though because the sniper will say it's at 175 when my mechanical gauge isn't even registering yet (130 degrees), it will eventually get up to 170 but takes much longer. But they are the cheapest mechanical equus gauges so it could be that. Wife wants some heat shield and carpet of some sort in the bronco so ones funds free up that will probably be the next project. Hoping to get some full widths this weekend and start working on that swap in the future. Been happy so far though! Basically just take it out for a cruise from time to time, honestly still nothing further than 20 miles from home. I don't know why i'm nervous about it after wheeling for 7-8 hours straight at uwharrie basically, but in my head that's different than 60+ miles at 55-70mph. Maybe i'll get it out soon and take it for a decent trip on the road.

Are your temp sensors in different places in the engine?

Most of the heat in mine comes through the firewall. Coating the exhaust is in the future plans for me.

Holley went into the spot the sensor was in before reads at a different rate. Mechanical sensor is in the back of the intake but same side of the thermostat as the Holley . A few degrees difference I could see but 30+ seems odd is all.

At one point a few years back Holley and fitech had a bad run of temp sensors. Possibly buy a acdelco one, run it and keep the other in your glovebox. They are detrimental to the efi

II had a mechanical guage in the back of the intake on the driverside and the holley sensor up by the thermostat I would see 10-15 degree differences easily.

That’s how mine is set up. Mechanical one is definitely slower to respond and about 15 degrees off after 30 minutes or so of running.

Picked up my full widths today, thanks @RoosterRash ! Now to start sourcing the parts needed to swap these in, adjustable track bar, radius arm cap spacer, 1 ton tie rod kit, etc. might not get it done before uwharrie in November but going to do my best.

Been working on driving the bronco more just to get a feel for it on the street. Drove from Ayden to Hubert and other than the unbalanced tires freaking out a bit at 70, the truck cruised great at about 63 all the way there. Been helping a buddy get his K5 back together in time for the veteran's day trip we have planned. On the way home, I noticed my voltage dropped to about 12 and was holding steady there but wouldn't increase. Pulled over in the next town and found out the bearing retainer(?) in the back of the alternator (car quest 1 wire alternator) had backed out. Thankfully it ran into the head before falling all the way out. I pushed it back in and thankfully my wife works in the area and met me so I had someone to follow me in case the worst happened. I had to stop about ever 5-10 miles to push the retainer back in and eventually stopped in trenton at a dollar general and slapped some gorilla tape on the back of the alternator. That held over long enough to get me home and pull the alternator to have it warrantied out. All in all not a bad trip. Another 120ish miles on the truck which is awesome. I need to transfer the learn table over before November if I get a chance though. Other than that, been putting in work on trying to get the bronco and suburban ready for sale so that I can get started on ordering parts for my full width swap, long arms and 37s. We will be there eventually.

Went wheeling again this weekend in URE for veterans day. Had some good old friends meet us out there. Not much had changed since last time except the sniper honestly. Truck ran great, had a few weird spots where the sniper would surge when the truck was close to stalling but other than that everything worked well. Smacked the rear quarter rocker on a rock and scratched it pretty good, not too worried though as we will be doing a 2x6 rock slider there in the near future. Definitely found some shortcomings and needs that will be addressed soon. All in all a good weekend with great friends and some plans for the future. Wish I had been able to go out with all the bronco guys the week before, but this was the weekend we've had planned for almost a year so it's how it worked out. Hoping to sell my big bronco soon so I can do the long arms, 37s, new rear suspension before the next trip. Didn't make it out to the event unfortunately as we were on backside for most of saturday night, but heard it went off great and i'm glad to hear it! Hopefully next year we will have an early enough start to make it off the trails in time. I think I recognized a few rigs from here out there this weekend, but unfortunately don't know many personally to have flagged anyone down to talk but it was a great trip!

Hate I missed seeing this in person.
I believe you came up Dickey bell just before me. I was parked down at the bottom on the right with the big group. I saw yours just walk up it! Looked great! Here’s a video one of our guys got of you at the top of Dickey bell. Also have a short video of the fj behind you.

Oh man I guess I need to pay better attention. I was oggling over the flatty at the bottom.

Yeah we had a bit of a fight getting him up but he walked it up like a champ!

Pulling the full width 9 apart to get it cleaned up to put in, and found plenty of water inside it from where it was stored outside I believe. Found this surface rust and some light pitting on the ring gear. Is this beyond usable or will this get me by with just some noise?

Here’s a video running through the ring really quickly if it gives a better idea of condition. I did but the major rust spots with a brass brush to clean them up a hair.

I would flood the heck out of everything with cleaner button it up and run it!

(I’m not a pro)
Kind of where I’m at with it. Intention down the line will be to step up gear size and go to 35 spline eventually so don’t want to pour too much into these to run in this configuration. But that could be a few years away so don’t want to be kicking myself in my own ass in the meantime

I would definitely get a for sure answer from better brains than I don’t have but if it’s just a toy the worst thing would be the bearings being pitted and at that point idk.

Finally turning my attention to doing the full width swap. Picked up a couple of foxbody mustangs at the beginning of the year and they've held my attention the past few months as well as building my wife a deck for our pool. Reserved an AirBNB for November in gulches to try something new so I have my deadline to try to get the axles swapped in. Current plan is to just slam them in as is. On the fence between running the stock radius arms or convincing the wife to let me order the long arms. Will still be running 35's and the 3.5" used springs for the forseeable future, but time to get the parts pile built up to get this stuff swapped over!

Put my sniper on my mustang for the time being and swapped the carb back to the bronco. Had issues keeping the truck running. Would run for a few seconds or if I blipped the throttle, but wouldn't idle to save it's life. Adjusted timing and carb settings but still nothing. Decided to order a new gasket and it idles like a dream now. Need to retune it where I adjusted it before but good to crank it up after it's been sitting for a few months. Ordered the GM 1 ton TRO kit from ruff stuff and their track bar kit while it was on sale, to get the front axle swapped. Also picked up some front brakes from oreilly's while it was on sale as well. Still trying to keep the budget low on the build where I can. Would love to stumble across some 37x12.50x17 tires by november, but not holding my breath. Still need to order balljoints/bearings and rear brakes but the parts pile is coming along. Have some 3.5" used rear springs that i'm going to swap in place of the stock leafs and lift blocks that were back there. Hoping to order James duff extended radius arms soon and extended coil buckets for the full width. Any tips for drilling knuckles/pitman arm out for tapered inserts for the TRO swap? I also may look into welding the axles to have budget spools in the meantime for the trip in november. Hoping to regear next year.
