Have lived in a log home for 30 years and have had a yearly battle with carpenter bees. Tried traps, poison, borax, tennis rackets, caulk, .22 loaded with rat shot (by far the most fun), with limited success. Last year, I was told to try carburetor cleaner (spray can w/little red tube). I sprayed every hole as soon as I spotted them. Soon I saw dead bees under almost every hole. The best part was they didn't return for the rest of the year. I caulked the empty holes in the fall.
This year they are back and going through their courtship. As soon as they start boring I am bringing out the carb cleaner and hope for the same result. I don't know why it worked better than poisons inserted in the holes, but it must leave some residue that repels the bees. Hope it works as well this year.
