You could figure it that way too, but I was just going off of this...The lack of pinion gears has me thinking the same. Theres only 8 of them on a d30 with that ratio.

What sucks is I still have a 79 Ford 60 front in the shop with chromos and 4.88’s… but then my lightweight with 35’s is pointless.

This. Those gears were setup by a person I think a lot of, but he did not have the proper tools or know how to do them. It was a like “throw some paint at it, doesn’t feel too loose, it’s good to go” and then I wound up with those axles and threw them in and severely abused them for years.Just regear the 30, parts are stupid cheap for d30's.
As long as I wheeled my tj with 4.88s and heavy 36s I only ever broke axle shafts. Old Togie was pretty good at setting gears I guess.This. A good properly setup gear set will last pretty good.
