Ok, wanted to get a thread started here about officially organizing as a "league" or series, whatever you want to call that.

WHY should we organize?

Shared equipment / volunteer pool / training / rules / and best possible experience for the RACERS, FANS...and land owners!!

I think organizing officially as a "League" or series will allow us to have both prize pools for winning at races AND do the whole points thing for an annual payoff as well.

I am wanting to help set this up / I wanted to get a thread started asking for some specific information.

First of all... this is nothing NC4x4 official / and this may get split off this site altogether so it does not get associated with the site. (Rob is providing us a great site for hanging out as NC wheelers...and that is what this site is for.)

Just hoping we can get started here a bit first before creating our own little place on the interweb. (I may get shot down here / have not cleared this at all yet)

What I am wanting to hear from:

LANDOWNERS - Those with land / property that is suitable for racing / that is interested in being part of this.

RACERS - getting a good set of rules in place that is fair without being annoying. So you have FUN...because honestly this ain't gonna pay the bills.

FANS - you guys are gonna be what makes or breaks this concept. BAJA and KOH and all those other races have a huge support base. Tis kinda a shame our guys have to drive several thousand miles to race, would much rather have say 4 or so events close enough we can all enjoy?

We will organize the topic as we go...BUT PLEASE refrain from generic comments at this point. (No, "COOL" type stuff, but specifics are requested like, "Give us trophies", "Better Seating - and HOW you would suggest doing that" etc)

I am offering to put my money and time where my mouth is... I have been the guy behind the scenes in a few other places where money was involved and I think folks are comfortable with me in that role.

Other volunteers will be crucial...and VENDORS I haven't forgotten you. The ONLY reason you will support us is if we send you biz!! Please keep us in the loop on how to better drive traffic to you and your companies.

Sam

Are you classes going to be similar to those of the 4x4 cross race?

I'd like to see more runs (heats) and/or side by side racing. I think that 4 races per year or one per quarter would be plenty!

I suspect there needs to be a "Stocker" group

A Mid-level group (lockers & ##% of stock frame)

And the Pro Series guys

Just my early thoughts on that. Too many classes = too few in a given class. (I would likely have combined the B/C crew if pushed for an example)

3-4 races per year would be about the most folks could really handle / need time to re-build...keep the spouses happy, etc.

I would like to see MORE Rock Crawling elements as opposed to pure BAJA style but that is me. Racers and Fans will have more input on that.

Races should last more than 5min. I like the KOH/RCQ setup, staggered starts and everyone out there at once, but staggered. Obviously they'll be bottlenecks, but that puts more emphasis on strategy/planning.

Shorter courses could be run "bracket" style with several rounds of head-to-head racing

I'd help out as much as I can

At any given place...build 2 dif. courses. One racer per course= two racing at once but on dif. course. Then those two switch lanes and each races the other course.

To me, the perfect track would have a little bit of everything..Rocks, jumps, bumps, holes, logs, tires, hills, and yes..even mud...No ponds!

I would like to see a series set up...say one month, it's at DPG...then the FARM, then URE Stables...then...........??

I would love to see this 4x4 community(nc4x4) become officially involved. But even if not..just having this forum is very benificial.

I would also like to see some sort of club v/s club type of competition. I have a million ideas on that subject.

I would also help out in anyway that I could.

From our racer's perspectives on payouts...

Would love to hear folks that have participated in other racing series (mud, circle track, etc)

I assume payouts are up to 100% in cash (from entry fees) + prizes.

Do you prefer a few BIGGER payouts or spread them out over the class more (1st thru 10th or...)

Say 25% going into the kitty for year end payouts based on total points for the vehicle or "entry"? (Would say driver but I see complications)

Land Owners will get paid via ticket sales / vendor booths / camping rentals.

Sponsors for the series would be in both cash and prizes...

SOME cash would need to be set aside for running the series itself / radio & other equipment / tshirts /

Thx for ideas so far

I would like to see a 2wd class or have the course setup so that 2wd can run in A or B class.

I know that 4x4cross you could run 2wd but I didnt feel comfortable running my 2wd truck without checking out the course first and now I know that I could have run the track.

Winner take all is awesome if you are the winner but when you get second it sucks that you dont get jack.

I like the short course idea similar to C.O.R.R. with multiple classes including a stock class for the budget minded. Payout at end of year and trophies for 1st-3rd. Did something like this in Florida a few years back. Had buggy classes, baja bug class, and tough trucks.

X2 on the 2wd drive class, IMO a 4x4 race should be 4x4s running in 4 wheel drive.

Four races a year would be great.

I vote for more of an offroad coarse as a posed to a baja style coarse.

Staggered starts would be great to watch, Kinda like KOH, With the bottle necks and all.

Not sure how I feel about side by side racing, Not sure how that would affect liabilities of the racers, I don't want to be responsible for someone getting hurt.

What about a "Rally" class that is open to the whole VW Baja BUGs, Subarus, etc, 2wd or AWD, etc? I am thinking this opens it up to a wider group of folks....more racers = more crowd/fans = more vendors and attention. This might draw in even some of the circle track / dirt guys like our Fire Chief that was at the race helping out.

We sorta have that with the "mud racing" aspect but they appear to have lots of support and series setup already / let them do their own thing.

They def would avoid the rockcrawling aspects of the course / then "Stock 4x4" class would be crawling over logs / rocks, etc as part of their course, etc.

Progressively harder lines for the Mods and Pros?

Sounds good to me, I know I have buddys who would love to get in a rally type thing.

I would just like to see a fast then slow then fast type course.

Baja then crawl then Baja, Nothing extreme for the A & B class, with something harder for the pros

I think adding all of this stuff would be nice in time, but right off the bat may prove to be difficult

Why not mimic what was just recently done at places like the farm, dpg. They might not want to do it, but it would be the ideal places. Central location and what all.

The problem is we need to attract the people that don't come to this site.

my take on classes
I would keep it strictly based on tire size and lockers. - Who cares if it has a stock frame/suspension a stock CJ on leafs isn't in the same league as a stock TJ on coils.
31" class 33"/35" etc..

Will this be a driver funded payout ? where drivers' entry fees more/less cover their own pay out. Or will this be spectator funded where the goal is to have more racer involvement.

Rally - there is a rally league that runs the area. Richard Nuss (thecarman) has run in them, if he is still here maybe he can speak to that.

The only problem I see with this is, what is to stop someone from building a sick rig with super nice suspension and one hell of a drivetrain and just slap some 33s on it. I will/would definitely compete in something like this, but an entry like that would be a big deterrent.

I would be VERY interested in competing in this. Hell, if my business is doing well enough I'd love to be a big sponsor of it!

Definitely need a class that is for us cheapskates. Something like the UCARS at Wake County Speedway. You could even have a buy-out clause like $1000 to keep some guy from buying a $300 Cherokee and sticking in a $3000 engine and kicking everyone's ass.

I'd like to race. I wanted to do XRRA. The problem for me is the crazy fees and tough requirements. I don't want to buy a fire suit and have the roof raised so it's 3" above my helment. You don't need crazy entry fees. $50 is about all I'm willing to pay even if it's 100% payback. It's already going to cost me alot in fuel, time, and repairs.

As for landowners you need to contact 250cows. I think he's on here and was planning to do something like that at his place later this year.

Also you need to nail down the type of event such as rock crawling to dirt track racing. Bansil was trying to put together a dirt track racing event.

As with any form of racing...the most money stands the best chance to win if they pour it all into their rig. This is where the rules and structure would become tricky...My vote would be to have a deepish mud pit to contend with..that would keep the 2wd baja pre runners in line with the average wheeler.

Great Idea,

You mesan like the guy that had the pre-runner in the 4x4Cross B-class? Nothing special about the truck at all (he was open/open 2wd), but total Chaos front end w/ high end resereve shocks and matching rear.

Actually I'm still not sure why he was B-class, he had "factory type" suspension and 33" ATs.

Really?
IIRc shortest time overall for all classes was a pretty stock Cherokee that we all know wasn't exactly babied...
IMO that proves it's NOTthe $$ but the balls and bad-assery.
