few update pics of the VW Bug

Nice! now it has that "fast" look to it...
looks good fo sho...
:)

Nice ride. I have been thinking of building an old VW pretty similar to this. I will say I am not crazy at all about the louvers though, in my opinion, if you swapped them out before you painted those fenders, the car would look perfect.

Well since the front was to low and the tires were rubbing I decided I need to raise it some for driving..

So I went on the hunt for some air ride shocks..

Wow what a wallet slammer.. I figured there has got to be a better way, so I started searching google, and other sites.. here is what I found..

I found Monroe carries some air shocks that seemed like they could work.

So I went to there website and found this:
http://www.monroe.com/catalog_lookup/misc_app_docs/08_MountingLengthSheet.pdf

a 55 page PDF on all there shocks.. after a ton of time spent figuring out what lenght I needed, what type ends I needed I found out the for my ride i need part # MA750..

so next I started to call the local parts stores and found it is very hard to get these shocks.. but then I contacted a local parts store called Walker Parts.. they said yup we can have them here in 3 days.. sweet..

here are some pics of the shocks I got

these are them on the ground..

here they are installed and air lines hooked up.

I have not installed my air compressor or air tank that will come when I make some mounts for the rear air bags I have from an old project..

I actually used a bicycle pump to test these and sure as shit they worked..

JC Whitney has coil over front shocks for veedubs for like 85.00 a pair, their adjustable

ya but with air I can drop the air out and slam the car onto the pan :)

well that is mo cooler than having to get under there with a spanner wrench

so how hard was it to pump them up with the bicycle pump? That would definitely catch people's eye if you pumped them up by hand at a show or something...ghetto-fabulous!

hahah i was surprised..

I used an old school bike pump and i pumped them up about 2 inches with no issues..

after i did i thought to myself I should just run the air lines inside the cab and when i get ready to leave just start pumping..

my other idea was to use one of those cigarete lighter electric pumps.. until i get full on board air hooked up.. i get that would be faster then hand pump..

$1500 for a Herbie Baja type Bug. Good, bad or other?

http://greensboro.craigslist.org/car/685962712.html

<><Fish

I love the look a lot..

but the pics do not show where the bad would be..

IE: the pan, floor boards, engine under neither, etc..
You woul dneed to go look at it in person to really see or get him to send better pics of things up close..

I would ask for pics.. of under car, floor pans, just general under and inside car.. to see what you may be getting into

what he said...best to check it out in person, wear old clothes and crawl up underneath...taks a screwdriver to poke around for rust...
but if it's not too beat, then $1500 for a running baja is a decent deal...and if the rust is confined to pans only, then that's not a dealbreaker either...
could be ok, but depends on where the rust is...(pans ok, frame suspension, etc bad)

Unless he already got it, the baja's already sold! They don't last long around here, do they? Ken, if you want a new decklid, I can hook you up. I've got three here I need to move. I think you need to smooth it out. I'm afraid that you'll paint it, and six months down the road be sick of the louvers. Then the paint money was wasted. A new hood and rear apron shouldn't be too hard to scrounge up. Once that's done, you'll have one smooth looking chop! The chop looks well done. Is it? Do the doors leak at all? How are the gaps? One of these years I'll get my junk on the road.

as for the decklid.. I have another one that all I need to do is go pick it up :) so that is taken care of.. but I am not 100% against the louvers on the front.. but I do not like them in the rear.. the 2 things I think I am going to change is the rear lid and the rear apron..

yes the chop is done very well.. has some paint bubbling that I am gonna attack and see how bad it is.. but for a 20 year old chop yes it is good.

the doors do not leak.. but they do need new window rubber, and the drivers door bottom hindge needs some attention..

and in the long run I would like to replace the pan with a better condition one.. but I am not affraid to drive it as is for now..

the goal for me on this car right now is to get it running well and get the little things fixed like the lights, and wiring so I can drive this as my daily driver while I work on my 4 door dodge conversion

Well I put some 33 Ford tail lights on the back of the bug..

I like the round look to go with the round headlights

saw this going down six forks the other day in raleigh...thing is slick, i like it. i saw it and i was like damn that things sweet for a bug, and then i get on here and see this, makes sense. bad xj, bad bug, want to build my jeep?

Followed you down capital and into my neighborhood the other night. Car looks good. Nothing like being behind a car of someone you have never met before but being 100% sure who it belongs to. Haha. Not alot of chopped pink VWs rolling around north raleigh I guess.
