Gone Postal : Mail Jeep Build

looking great man! i like how the steering box is up high and out of the way. Mine is in the stock location on my cj and has takin a beating! Its the lowest spot on the front of my rig besides the shackles and i run it into crap all the time.

Thanks Jason! I'm glad you like it. Mine had to be higher since the steering shaft was attaching to the outside frame rail. I'm hoping it doesn't get hit and it works well where it's at. I'll let you know how it works once I get the steering shaft figured out. I think I'll have to run a high angle steering joint to get the shaft around the shock hoop. No biggie though...hopefully.

Dude!!!!!!...looks great got 2 questions tho...1st) do you have like a troop of 4x4 fab gnomes that go behind you picking up every bit of mess?..if so can i borrow one? because when i work on my truck it looks like a tornado hit the surrounding area...LMAO...2nd) it looks like the truck sags where the hood and body meet...i know it doesnt sag but was that on purpose or from when you made your grill mounts?.....believe me i am totaly not criticizing..i can only hope and pray my mail jeep looks that awesome when i get done:rockon: ...well since i dont have the steel i need on hand till next friday im off to slice-n-grind some more now that my eye has healed up nice...dont suppose you could possibly take a few measurements of your cage and post 'em for me to copy???

anyways will be back to see more and thanks

Haha! Nah no gnomes. I wish though! Cleaning up sucks! My buddies always laugh at me bc I make them wipe off my tools before they put them back in my toolbox. 2) the hood is bent I think. It won't sit square on the grill. I may have to get a new hood to square it up. If you look at the first pics from when it was towed to my house the hood and grill didn't line up then either. Its no sweat about pointing it out. I've been scratching my head about the twisted hood since I bought this turd. The grill seems square and the grill mounts I made are the same height and the frame was pretty square when I built the front suspension. The hood is split and bent on the drivers side. It's the hood or the body. Let's hope it's the hood.

I'll try to take some measurements. What measurements do you want me to take?

so no gnomes ehh...well that totaly ruins my day...anyway on to important stuff..as i was staring at my firewall i really got to thinking about how i was going to set up the braking system(even tho im like 2yrs from needing it..lol) have you givin any thought to this area yet....the stock location doesnt seem to bad for rocks and what not but definitly looks like it would be very bad to come across a deep hole in the woods...and i have a honda to cannibilize...plus power brakes would definitly be a huge bonus...just thinkin ...ill get back to you about the measurements...

So whats going on with this thing? I need an update haha.

Sorry man. No updates right now. I actually put my house up for sale and sold it really fast so I've been looking for houses. The house im sellimg was about like my postal project. It was a shitbox me and my gf renovated. I am buying one with a pretty nice garage that will fit my jeeps and tools so I'm really excited. By the end of September I'll be back on the jeep again. Sorry for no updates. Having a better workspace it going to be awesome! I can't wait!!

awwww man...i came all the way over to your build to check things out...lol congrats on selling your house...and hey talk nicely about your jeep it has feelings too ya know...got a bunch more done to mine tho...gonna try n have it back on the frame by monday...unless it rains more...well cheers

Little update...:) The postal was loaded on a rollback the other day when we closed on our old house. The house we are buying is taking longer to close because the sellers suck and won't get their shit out. Long story! Needless to say, we close in two weeks so within the next month I'll be back on this thing. I'm itching to get back in the garage and get my welder going again. I might have forgotten how to weld! :D

Hey man..looking good on that rollback...lol....im still in sheet metal hell...but its coming along..gonna set the motor this week..check it out and let me know what you think...

Oh yeah meant to ask what r you planning on for fenders..mine are cancer ridden and am contemplating some tube fenders but want to keep the original jeep look somewhat...to make a piece of metal to replace the outer plate where they bolt to the body is going to be a pain...as you know its a 90deg bend at the cowl then it gradualy turns into a long sweeping 90.. i guess i could grind a 4x4 wood block into the correct shape and hammer one out but not sure how smooth i could get it

I'm planning on building some tube fenders, willys flat fender style. I have an idea that I think could be cool but I'm not too sure until I try it out.

Update. My jeeps are in their new home and it's quite spacious. :D I should have all of my 220 and 110 wiring hooked up within a few weeks then I'll be back in business. My new garage fits both jeeps, my gf's car and I have plenty of room for my workspace too. It's a HUGE step up from my old setup.

The other car fits behind where the postal is parked.

This is my new work area with room for all of the jeeps to stay out of the weather too. Sorry about all the boxes. They'll be put up soon too. :D

Wow. Nice garage. I'd love to have that much room. Are you still in South Charlotte area?

sweet setup man. Maybe one day when the wifey-to-be is done with school, I'll end up with a garage like that. Start getting busy finishing that thing up.

Thanks Guys! I'm loving it and I haven't even thrown any sparks in it yet. I'm in Matthews still. I'm off of Sardis Rd and Hwy 51. We moved to the other side of the neighborhood that we were already in. HAHA! My gf loved the house, I loved the garage. It was a match made in heaven. :D

Don't worry. I'm itching to get started again. I'll be back at it really really soon.

Calm down, you are building the El Camino of Jeeps.lol... When you build something that different it will not appeal to everyone. I love both these builds. Stick with the updates this board is really one of the best! You just have get use the joking around(southern humor i guess) If you don't believe it copy and paste your build thread into general 4x4 on pitate and see the real asshats come out...... Sorry to clutter your build thread but felt it needed to be said. I almost did the same thing to build me a dd with 3800 sc and ac but ended up buying a vw corado so i know about having the odball! Plus i still have my el camino so i feel your pain!

I'm back at it! Today was my first workday in my new garage and it was fairly productive. I could have gotten alot more done, but I kept having to hunt for all my tools.

Garage.

I built the transmission crossmember mount for the Advance Adapters adapter. I could have bought theirs but mine was free. :D

bolted in place.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2709.jpg

Sorry all the pics turned out so shitty. I also bolted in the front driveshaft. It was the spare for my YJ but it fits perfectly so I'm planning to run it for a while. Using parts that I have laying around will speed up progress by keeping costs down.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2710.jpg

I then drilled out the frame on both sides and added the crossmember that the center plate w/ bushing will attach to. I wanted to have the transmission mount separate than the skid plates that will be added later to make it easier to service the transmission and t-case. The tube was some random scrap I had laying around that ended up fitting perfectly with some gently massaging. :D

Side shot. I'll tie the mount that connects to the t-case adapter to the piece of tubing.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2712.jpg

From the side. It won't have a flat belly, but it will be close enough to flat for me!
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2713.jpg

Rear looking forward. The t-case is the same height as the crossmember.
