Gone Postal : Mail Jeep Build

So I need some wiring help. Any GM GenIII guys out there?!

I have been removing my wiring harness using the steps from Lt1Swap.com and I am ending up with a few wires for each plug. So here are my questions....

First off, I'm running an SM465 tranny so no auto tranny stuff needs to be on the harness. And I won't ever go to an auto because I like shifting gears. Should be fun with a right hand drive setup. :D I'm also stripping all the A/C components, EGR and emissions related stuff.

Can I remove the sensor that mounts to the side of the oil pan without an issue? I read in someone else' build that they were able to remove it since it is only read by the PCM but isn't actually needed for the engine to run properly. I just thought it would be cleaner with no plug and wire hanging down.

Also, do I need the cut wires that are in the pic below (the ones on the left side of the image? They were cut like this from the harness from the engine I got so I don't know what the plug looks like but I thought you guys might now off the top of your head what they are for and if I need them or not.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Okay so I found out that I can remove the oil level sensor. I'll cut that crap out tonight.

Here are the other things that are stumping me on the wiring...

These are the other wires that I'm wanting to remove. This is what doesn't make sense. The plug on the right appears to be the o2 sensor for the right side but the tan wire for the PCM was called to be cut but it still has 3 wires. Looks to be power, ground and something else so I'll remove it and the remaining wires. What are the wires on the left for? Anyone know?

This is the EGR delete plate I made. Simple 1/8" steel. I'll probably RTV it on if there is any air leaks.

Do your motor a favor and get a bigger air filter. Its not gonna like that one, I have seen a few people try them and swap them out, they don't move enough air.

Damn! I was hoping it was going to work okay. I guess I'll have to think of something else. Is it just bad at high rpms or is it across the whole rpm range?

I can tell you that the wires on the right are the O2 sensor. As far as the others, would they happen to go back to the transmission by chance, (in an auto that is). And on the air filter, I'd try it and see what it does. I run a conical filter on my LT1 with no problems. It might be a shade bigger than that but not much.

Thanks for the info!! I'm thinking the pic below with the loose wires...I think they are the wires for the o2 sensor I'm supposed to run b/c my instructions called to cut the wire for the o2 with plug still on it in the pic.

Ill have to trace down the pinout to make sure. The stray wires from the pic below can be removed as they trace back to the fuse box for an auto tranny. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here. this pic...

Not a real update but my parents got me a SWAG offroad mount for my tube bender for my birthday so I can drink beer and bend tubing now.
awww.pirate4x4.com_forum_images_smilies_beer.gif
It's a very nice looking setup. I'm very impressed.

ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_photo14.jpg

I got some work done today. I built some crossbars for the ballistic fab shackles I picked up for the front. They're longer than the front shackles on it now. They should help it flex better since there wasn't much movement with the other shackles.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2564.jpg

Then I welded them up. They should be pretty strong.

I also welded up my SWAG Offroad tubing bender bracket and got it painted and installed. let the beer drinking tube bending begin. :D
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2565.jpg

The bender mount seems to be a really nice setup. I'm excited to use it. I just need to make a new bender base so I can roll that thing around for bending longer tubes without having to spline everything which was a PITA!

Back at it again today. First off, I built some new mounts to mount the grill so it's free-standing. I used some spare 1/2" bolts and nuts I had laying around. Outkill but it was something I had laying around. I had to mount the grill before I could figure out where to mount the radiator.

nut welded to the washer.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2571.jpg

Then I welded the washer to a piece of scrap DOM I had laying around too.

Upclose.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2573.jpg

Then I built some lower radiator mounts out of the 1/8" plate I had around. Straight on. FYI. the radiator is upside in these pics.

Another angle. The mounts were originally 3pcs of material I welded together and hit with a flapdisc.

I also got a bigger air filter since Snappy said it was too small. Hopefully this one will work out better.

entire build looks awesome! I cant wait to start over on mine and actually do a nice job with things like you have

Almost there. I am expecting a ride soon

You bet! If we can squeeze you in that little clown jeep.

Thanks man! I am trying to do it the right way. I don't always know what that is but I'm trying I guess.

Day 1 of my week of vacation.

First off, I threw the radiator in, now I just need some hoses.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2586.jpg

Grill back on.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2587.jpg

Side view. You can see I have plenty of clearance for an electric fan.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2589.jpg

I also started building the 2nd rocker panel / cage tie-in setup. I didn't get any pics of that. I'm ready for that to be DONE. That has been more of a job than you would think.

I also started building my custom pitman arm. It's 1/4" top and bottom so the heim joint will be setup as double sheer. I am going to add a plug in the middle and I'm going to wrap the whole setup with 3/16" plate. It should be plenty beefy. The only thing left from the old arm will be the center round piece that is splined. Also, the bolt shown in the pic is only a 1/2" bolt. the heim will be setup with a 3/4" bolt. Then the whole thing will be TIG welded. I was just getting everything mocked up at this stage.

my handy dandy template I made. :D
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2594.jpg

Day #2 & #3. It's been busy! I worked on a bunch of stuff over the last few days. I built the 2nd rocker panel yesterday. Then today I added all the cage tie-ins. What a PITA!!

Cage tie-ins hard tacked in place.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2595.jpg

Upclose of the rear portion. The funny looking riveted piece was the old leaf spring hangers. They were single sheer and outboarded. I cut the post off a while back and I decided to use the mount for my tie-in.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2596.jpg

Under floor mount. It's 1/4" plate.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2597.jpg

Another angle. I angled the front piece so it will miss the tire at full stuff...hopefully. :D
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2598.jpg

Side #2.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2599.jpg

This is a cool trick I thought up. I drilled the cage floor plates when I did the cage a few months ago and I lost my template for the drilled holes so I took some thin cardboard and placed it between the floor plate and the tub floor then drilled through the holes I could match my bolt holes for the underbody plates with little issues.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2601.jpg

I also drilled out and installed the little Genright LED turn signals I bought a while back. I thought they looked pretty cool.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2602.jpg

Then I got some muscle over to the house so they could help me take the body off of the frame. Joe, Mitch and Burley resting after a job well done.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2603.jpg

My loaner engine hoist from Warbeast came in handy again.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2606.jpg

My neighbors have to think I'm such a redneck. O well. I'll have the body back on the frame tomorrow so they don't have to look at my mess very long. I'm in the bkgd welding.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2607.jpg

Yep that is a box laying on top of me. Nothing is worse than falling spatter on your stomach while you're welding on your back. 'nuff said!
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2609.jpg

I added some tubing slugs between the frame C channel to help strengthen frame before I boxed it.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2611.jpg

Everything welded and getting primer. I will go back in tomorrow and add a cross bar from the front & back tie-ins so I can mount my shocks to that cross piece.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2614.jpg

You can see where I boxed the frame at the rear spring hangers.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2615.jpg

Another random angle.
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2616.jpg

Now it's bedtime so I can get going and finish some more stuff tomorrow. My plan for tomorrow is...finish shock mounts for rear, get the body back on the frame, weld in an additional crossmember at the rear spring hangers also, and a few other odds and ends.

:gitrdun: thanks again for cutting that piece of plate for my build. Let me know when you want burly and I to stop by a put that body back on before the neighbors get pissed!

dude cant wait till mine is closer to that...im in sheet metal hell at the moment on mine....luckily amlost every thing is the same thickness and all flat with maybee a 1/2-1.0" lip here and there...im still not sure if im going to fix the strobe yet or not tho...lol...oh yeah ive started adding some pics...and is your frame fully boxed?...mine is except for about 2 feet on either side in rear...well hope yull check out my build thread its just getting going and give me some ideas and criticism...lol

Thanks for your help again today. That frame plate we cut out last night looks awesome on your cherokee!

I'll definitely check out your build. I would box the frame on those 2-3ft. Mine was built the same way and I added more frame plating upfront with 1/8" and then I added 1/8" and tubing in the rear portion between where I mounted my leaf spring hangers. Good luck with the build. I think next time I'll just build a buggy.

Day 4. I quit early today. I'm worn out. I had some friends over the last few days to lend a hand. It's really helped me get this much progress done. They helped me paint the frame, sand the spatter off, cut out steel, etc, etc.

This morning I knocked out the additional tubework that ties the b & c pillar cage tie-ins together.

Then I welded in the rear upper shock mounts. The mounts are some pre-made tabs from ballistic fab. I am mounting the shocks as seen. I want them as close to the brakes as possible.

Next some friends came over to lend some muscle to help me get the body back on. We had it back on pretty quick with the help of the engine hoist.

Shots of the tube work with the body on it. I'm really glad to have the rockers, the final boxed frame portion and tie-ins done. That was a job!!
