"Gonna do it right...maybe!!??" Fuller's new XJ build!!!

those look like either IH or Dodge 44. If IH, it will have an 8 bolt spindle vs 6 for dodge/chevy. Also the stub shaft is long and less common, so spares wont be cheap/easy. The steering arms are longer than ford/chevy/dodge so you will need an extra long pitman arm to not loose steering.

I would agree with above in looking for a 99-04 SD d60.

I would get a chevy 231/241 that is psd and swap in jeep input, if you dont want to go d300.

thanks for all the input guys....just got back form picking up some pretty awesome 16.5x8 with 37x13.50x16.5 military humvee tires in great shape for stupid good deal so now I have my tires and wheels BUT .....now I got bigger problems and more serious...freaking 4L60 crapped out on us 2hrs down there and barely made it home after lucas treatment but by the time we got off highway in Gastonia, only 1and barely 2 so now onto that stupid crap....can't really take in any of this advise on the jeep right now as I'm stuck dealing with that...thanks and hope to soon be back at this build.....

on a quick side note from advise I skimmed through, if someone knows of a D300 for 23spline aw4 please forward me info...thank you (sounds the easiest to go for now)

Any of the 300s are direct bolt in with a spacer ring. 4wheelsupply, Novak, several others. $45-80 and bolt it in place. The flip kit and ring is a lot more.

John look up Tim Stewart in Clover.
He is a great auto trans guy for the 4l60.
He is on agony acres Rd off hwy 55.

Good work and very very reasonably priced if you pull the trans.

Thanks @Ron call him today. Came to work at 3 and nothing barely...putting to work in 2nd barely aarrrrrggg

But HPD44's are pricier than pass drop and LP D44's, right? Get a D300 for about $250, sell the NP231 for $150, and then just bolt the D300 up. Clock it down a few degrees if the driveline angle is too much, or just don't lift it too high.
this right here is the route that i go, hope to from the getgo, but for sure within time. and it's why I didn't mind getting these axles geared little bigger with leafs for good price (400...at least that is good price for me for D60/D44 8lug, geared little bigger, locking hubs,no disco). I know me, I won't spend money on gears or lockers, way too much cost for my current budget so when good/fair priced axles with anything in the 4:.. gearing comes along, it's what I go for. If I bought D60 F&R with 3:55gears than I would be stuck with that...probably forever lol.

and @Jody about the can't flip the 231...
I mean, this is Fuller we're talking about...
lol lol you said it not me
it's actually not that big a deal to extend the pickup tube and clamp it down on the inside to now pickup...you get the point. seen it done by many so

Not bad for 5 of them with aluminum rims for 300...worth 2hr drive and losing my transmission? No lol, but got it done! But new Tahoe trans is being put in so that's that

Well then, I am looking forward to seeing how you accomplish this with longevity.
Best of luck buddy

Be aware that those wheels do not have a safety bead on them... therefore, if you air down, the tire will come off the wheel.

Just keep an eye out for some cheap hummer wheels Recenter those rascals and rock out. and sell these if you do.

So u can't air down at all

Long term shouldn't be an issue..231/300 doubler kits are readily available and should be in the budget within few months...I'm hunting for D300 now though since I have the $for it so I hope to find one by the time I get to that point of build

Had to go to Miller's transmission as everyone is 3weeks out OMG..these 4l60s suck lol lol, but they gave me several hundred cheaper than him and will have done in week. Thanks for info too...you should come by and meet sometime,..work on the rig too hehe

man you really need to learn how to use google before you waste your money on stuff
I've come along way but I'm on a time limit too since I'd like to finish it before midsummer to have time to ride...only limited amounts of "open rides" in a season so I fish around for best deal within budget and time

Do you understand that by flipping a 231, which has the pickup mount cast into the bottom of the housing, that it will be starving for fluid and cannot lubricate properly.
I know all about 231/300 doublers, I had one of the first ones back in the day. But I don't think you realize that you can't simply rotate the 231 180* and it still function long term.
There's way more to it than that.

My point earlier was since this is a budget build, spend your $$$ wisely. By installing a drivers drop front diff, you will alleviate additional expenses and aggravation associated with a pass drop diff in an XJ. Again, I've been down that road and have an idea what you're up against.

Not trying to be difficult buddy. But you probably would benefit from listening to some more experienced members before you slap that IH 44 up front.

Easy man. I agree with the budget, but time? Come on. There are more places to take a rig wheeling than the flats or the SHOP that are basically open all year round. It can be hard to watch a rig sit on jack stands but it is part of the wheeling cycle.

When your rig is down and there is a big ride some place post up and see if you can ride shotgun. It is a lot of fun riding and heckling them when they can't get over obstacles :D Plus you don't have to worry about breaking your own junk.

Currently working on finding a D300 or np205 from what I read will work too...but might say screw it...wait and find the right Tcase and build the doubler from get go..either way I have the $for D300 so hoping to find one since will be needed in future plan anyway. Thanks and didn't mean to seem rude as not listening, I'm taking all notes in...I take long to respond sometimes while searching for parts and such. You find d300 before me LEt ME Know Lol

a 205 will be a terrible decision, imo. no gearing and wont be cheap/easy. Best bet for the 205 would be a Ford, then you would need to find a dodge 23 spline input or get an aftermarket one. The only pass drop option that might bolt up would be a dodge, but they arent easy to find. If you can find a 6 bolt chevy, it wont be cheap, and then you would still need the 23 spline input.

All in all, for the money you spend on a d300, you could buy a dsd d44 or SD60 and just run the 231 until you can put the doubler together.

Also, I would double check the ratio in those axles, if you havent. IH was never known for running deep gears in their vehicles, unless it was from a 4cyl.

If they are deeper, you could find a FSJ or 75-76 ford LP 44 and reuse the gear set in the other axle.

Also, because I forgot to put it in my post about the SD 60's...take an 1-5/16 socket with you. If that fits the pinion nut, its a 60, if not, its a Dana 50 and walk away no matter how good a deal it is. It just has to be said because I can see this going down that road if not.

All good info here..thank you..I'm hunting around for now...no time to work on it yet anyway lol
