Got mold?

I have to say that transformation is somewhat of a miracle. I would have never thought it could have been saved or at least saved in the eyes of the owner....lol This thread was an eye opener for sure.

Amazing what you and your guys were able to do.

I live in an older house that has a walk out basement and I have always wondered if there was mold behind the paneling. Is there a test out there for this?

Yeah we can do a spore trap test. It takes two samples to do it, at $125ea. We test the air inside and compare it to outside and counting the spores in the trap. It will tell you exactly what's going on in your house and if you have elevated levels of anything.

Are you having any sinus issues, itchy eyes or any congestion that goes away when your not home?

All you guys in the piedmont triad area keep me in mind for any floods, mold or fire damage issues.

I also do HVAC air duct cleaning, it's not cheap but if you have dust issues I bet your ducts are dirty. I clean the entire system very thoroughly, not that cheap scam where a guy comes and vacuums your vents.

hey based on doing that, plus experience in the mold business - what is your opinion on whole-house humidifiers that spritz a little into the return side of the ducts?
Our old house had one of the old-school rotating drum-in-a-naty-ass-pool of stangant water style things, after pulling that thing apart once and seeing how gross it could be I removed it and swore off the whole idea.
But the place we live now has what seems a much better design. We've never turned it on, bu it's been sooo dry this winter I just had to...

I'm not a fan of anything that would introduce moisture into the duct work if your ducts are insulated on the inside. If not it would be ok, but I would only run it the minimal amount you have to. If your ducts are insulated in the inside run it at night when it's coldest so that it will dry and not accumulate moisture. Maybe set it on a timer.

It has been a very dry winter. We run a small refillable in our room and our little girls room at night.

Take some NyQuil and go to sleep before her and try to snore louder lol
LOL....I need to try something! She got a little pissed when I threw the pillow over her head!

No insulation, just your typical galv steel ducts.
I can't imagine that adding any kind of insulation other than closed-cell foam (XPS etc) on the inside of ducts would ever be a good idea.

Problem here is its been so cold for so long the furnace runs a lot, sucking all the moisture right out.

...and cue Mark's thread on hand cream moisturizer lol...

It's called Remedia4, we applied it first, then went back with 3 coats of MMR. I imagine you could purchase it, but don't know what quantities. We buy it in 5 gallon jugs.

I have no idea how much it would cost. They charge by the square ft and it also changes according to how tight the space is, ease of access and what's under there. Doing it yourself would probably save you a ton. But the key is getting everything sealed good at your seems, and running the vapor barrier up the walls and foundation supports. Sealing off the vents on the sides and using a foam block for insulation, then the space becomes conditioned and will only be about 2-3* different from the rest of the house, eliminating the chance of mold and being much more efficient than traditional insulation.

I think @shawn did a ton of research into this once...
Great for air quality, not so good for structural expansion I *think* was the conclusion.

Not sure what you mean about structural expansion. But yes, sealing the crawl space is better in pretty much every respect. Oddly enough, it has the greatest impact on humidity levels in the attic, since all that moisture eventually migrates up through the house.

What kind of costs are talking for Cleaning the ducts? Example, I have a crawl space with easy access and a Main trunk that is insulated inside. I was replacing a flex hose the other weekend and noticed it was pretty nasty inside the main trunk. My trunk is probably 12"x24" in a straight line about 40' long (estimating from memory). What would something like that cost? I'm replacing all the flex tubes as needed, so only need the main trunk.

It's $80/trunk line, $25/vent. $325 minimum service charge if your system has say only 8 vents and 1 trunk. If you have any questions about the process or why it's not as cheap as the adds that get mailed out saying they will do it for $50 give me a call. I would love to discuss it with you.

Hey could you give me a call sometime this afternoon,336-634-2578,
