Hurricane Helene

Even ole Cleetus McFarland is heading to help with his Heli. He really wants to use that grappling on his new MD500 ha.

I texted @frankenyoter. I know service is spotty if any. But something as little as me getting my generator or a few of my friends pitch in. To loan out and some full gas jugs. Fills. Bed up and let someone use them for the time being. And would also try to carry a load of food to help out. I’d be willing to make the drive in as far as I could.

If anyone gets a sit rep on shady valley please let me know, have good friends that I can’t get into contact with.

One of my friends and her mom are stranded at a hotel in Asheville right now. Another one of those wrong place, wrong time situations. Her mom flew down from NJ for this trip they’ve been planning for about a year.

Another friend’s parents live in Banner Elk and are also cut off.

Definitely a much scarier situation for everyone than I expected. I’d help too, but not sure how we’d get aid to the ones who need it without more resources than I have at my disposal.

Edited to add: Anyone have National Guard connections? I wonder if they are mobilizing (or some similar organization) to drop some supplies in Banner Elk via air.

I’m thinking once I can get someone from the inside to help me get in somehow. I will take as many supplies as I can to disperse. But I know there is no point in going in blind. Will possibly even contact local grocery stores for water as well to take in.

If anyone knows of any local organizations that are taking donations for the affected areas LMK. I have friends from other states looking to help

I drove a truck to eastern NC many years ago. I remember the person at the shelter there saying that the most in-demand items were what most people and church groups didn't think of. They were overflowing with water donations. Said things like boxes of work gloves, dust masks, heavy bags for salvaging belongings, dry socks. I had two pallets of water (that joined dozens of other pallets in the parking lot). Also 2 pallets of Clorox (hazmat cert, what's that?) and they were super happy to see that.

Long time ago, but water and clorox came from Walmart. IIRC, they donated the water outright, and sold the clorox (to our church) for about what the pallet itself cost. I know our walmart here has a finite budget each month for donations, and it gets gone fast each month. I'm not sure it starts on the 1st of the month, but when it does, it's gone fast. Might be worth the ask at your local store.

FYI, here is the volunteer page for Samaritans purse. Never worked thru them, but hear they are well organized. And Boone is home turf.

They have closed 40 west at 77.

Reading this in other places as well. How are they going to enforce the ramps I wonder? Many folks just commute from Hickory Statesville corridor.

SHP from what I'm hearing. With NG backup if needed.

Just speculation, but the closure is probably to reroute through traffic more than local. 40 is going to be jacked up for a looooong time, and 77 is the closest north south reroute until 26 is figured out. But I imagine from Statesville to Hickory will be monitored by SHP and local LEO.
