If you want or need a CDL...

I really need to get mine I guess... Can't be hard, have had a bunch of stuff hauled in here and most of the truck drivers are idiots and can't back up a trailer for crap. They sure can't follow directions on how to come in my neighborhood....

Only thing that sucks is I'd be limited to automatic only, I guess that's OK since all the trucks are autos nowadays, but I just hate the thought of having THAT limitation on my license, might have to borrow someone else's truck.

Would an '87 Corolla have accomplished the same? If yes, then you are OK. If you say no, because you had to carry tools or tow a trailer for the job....then the truck is part of the job, and is commercial. Commuting vs. working...
@jeepinmatt between me, you, and the NSA/IRS agents scouring this thread for targets I'm hoping you don't do your own taxes

An LLC is a pass through onto personal taxes…. Does it really matter???

Have you seen the stuff they do in 3rd world countries with 87 corollas?
Don't forget the 3 wheeled rickshaws with scooter engines moving Hino, Isuzu truck frames and axles to repairs shops. I'm jealous at the lack of regulation compared to all the hoops, fees, a bureaucracy people have to put up with to be "legal" just to transport for profit even under 26K non CDL.

I don't see how mandating a certified course is going to help the current or future transportation industry, its just going to be another way for driving schools to spike course prices. Similar to how Drivers ED courses are no longer being taught in Highschool as a free course and now there are accredited driving schools you have to pay to attend if you want your license at 16. I'd rather the courses (standard, CDL) be free and just have an annual (every two years etc.) test to maintain your license paired with a fee. Keeps the opportunity open and hopefully keeps people on the road who know how to drive.

Just fyi... Trans-tech is booked out till April for driving tests, 140+ person waiting list. If you get your permit before the new deadline, then you're grandfathered in and have a year 6 months to get your license.

Call cccti in hudson instead of transtech. I believe it's $300 if you use their truck and trailer, $200 if you use your own. Their trucks are single axle day cabs and the trailer is a 48 foot single axle dry van, so definitely not the biggest rig, I'm not sure if there is a longer wait in order to use their equipment or how shitty it is I brought my own. They also have class B vehicles to test in. You have to have your permit for at least either 2 or 3 weeks before you're able to do the road test portion and the permit is only good for 6 months.

Good info there. I was also under the assumption it was good for a year.
Guess I need to study the book as I need to go get my license renewed anyways. Stupidly my f550 requires a cdl if you hook even a 10k trailer to it 🤦‍♂️

I was just telling my brother this afternoon that hudson used to "derate" some of their heavy equipment trailers just to skirt that law.

And then you wind up with an overweight ticket. Unfortunately your fubared any direction.

And then 90 year old gramps can go get in a 5,000 foot airbrake diesel pusher rv with a stacker trailer behind it and not need a damn thing

Those of you that have already taken the test for permit. What all did you have to take with you? I do not need my dot physical until I go to actually get the full license correct? Or do I need it prior to taking the test for the permit?
I just realized it's almost Feb, ahhhhhh have to go get this shit done

Going to go try to get squeezed in tomorrow. We'll see! Need to get my standard license renewed as well since for some reason it won't let me online. Looked for appointments within 50 miles of my area and there aren't any until the end of Feb early march

Make sure you study your street signs and read all the sections of the cdl book you're going to test on, they aren't "common sense" questions, they are silly useless shit pulled straight from the book

I was talking to a buddy with a F550 last weekend. He's way over 26k rated but instead of a CDL it's just a Class A.

I need to do more research before I say I know what I'm talking about but if that's all you really need it might save some non-commercial people some hassle if that's all that's required.

I went to the dmv Friday. Apparently everywhere around here only has one person working at a time. Went to Mocksville thinking it would be better in small-town vs larger....wrong. one person, no waiting inside, only 2 computers. Waited around for an hour as I got there at 11....their lunch was 1030 to 12 🤦‍♂️. Was 2nd in line, but got bumped by 2 with apps. Then was told there were no drinks allowed inside, so walked across the parking lot to put my coffee and water in the truck....2 more people beat me back and wouldn't let me in my place. It was cold, no chairs outside..... I said f it and left....drove to statesville. Walked right In, waited all of 3 min...got a number...sat down, and my number was immediately called. Flew through renewing my standard license paid some money and bam immediately on the computer to take my cdl tests.

I passed General Knowledge no problem. 50 questions, could miss 10. I missed 4 or 5. General knowledge is basically common sense if you have ever been around anything large.

Air brake was 25 questions, could miss 5. I missed 6. Over some stupid shit of me not taking my time and not paying attention. These are DEFINITELY straight from the book and honestly some 100 percent make no sense other than....they are in the book. Just as others have said.

Combination/semi test was 25 questions. Could miss 5. Again I missed 6 with only 2 questions to go. Out of the book questions definitly. Some quite stupid.
How many leafsprings can be broken in a pack before taken out of service. 1/4, 1/3, 1/2......personally common sense says none! 1/2 apparently.

With this being said....I did not even look at the book prior to taking the tests other than 3 pages of airbrake....and I took 1 practice General knowledge test. That was stupid of me especially being that I hate taking tests, but I also hate studying and reading blah type material.

I will be reading more and have taken several practice tests now, especially pertaining to the airbrake test. Will be going back first thing in the morning to hopefully wrap it up!

Good luck to everyone working on beating the feb 7 deadline! Read the airbrake and combo sections!!!!
