Lawn and Landscape

just rent the trailer from sunbelt.

Started looking into that when a buddy told me about seeing a sunbelt rental hooked behind a pickup. Haven't called yet, but saw the daily/weekly rental fee online. I need to call and see if they sell the materials too or if I get that on my own elsewhere (and where to get it)

But that DOES seem to be the best route

Siteone has the seed and fert. If you're renting a hydroseeder, Sunbelt probably has the hydromulch. if not Siteone probably will. And IF you use the hydroseeder let the seed soak in the water for a good while before you apply it. It will swell the seed and get it ready to germinate quicker. How much acreage are you seeding?

Yeah I had Sides seeding give me a quote: $8900

Damn near swallowed the bong water choking on THAT one

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

How big of an area are you trying to seed? I would buy a bunch of 50 lb bags of K31 and bails of wheat straw and do it myself, but I am a glutton for punishment.

Roughly 3/4 acre but ALL subsoil. No topsoil at ALL, and 80% on slopes that would require matting apparently
Honestly thinking of sodding the slopes and roadside. It comes with topsoil, and won't wash. By the time I buy topsoil, seed, straw, and fertilizer......

You're overthinking this! ;~) The amount of soil on a sod roll isn't going to amount to anything, and its sand at best usually. For 3/4 of an acre you can get a landscaper to do it because you'll spend forever doing it yourself. Sides just didnt want to do it. They are set up for BIG jobs. You may need some Excelsior matting for some slopes and the rest can be seeded regularly. Do not worry about topsoil, most all jobs are seeded on whats there. Trucked in topsoil sucks anyway.
Find a local landscaper and specify that you want all of it pulverized and prepared for seeding, slopes done with excelsior, 8 lbs. of fescue per 1000 sq ft, starter fert used per directions, and a thick cover of wheat straw on all. For 30,000 sq. ft. (3/4 acre) The seeding alone should be in the $1500-1800 range and excelsior will be on top of that. Thats $.05-.06 per sq foot. You can get it cheaper if you just want it covered by any old "landscaper" but they will scrimp on supplies and effort. Call your local SiteOne and ask for 2 or 3 companies that they would recommend and get some prices.

Hey guys, I finally sent off 3 soil samples to see what I need to do to have a better looking lawn next year - Front yard/back yard/garden. The yard is ~.45 acres or close to 20,000 sq ft.

PH was in the "acceptable" limits - 5.8-6.5 for both yard samples, it was high for the garden at 7.5 (6.2-6.7 optimal). Phosphorus and potassium were high in all locations.

The recommedation everywhere is no lime and 5 lbs of 21-0-0 fertilizer which looks like ammonium sulfate after a tiny bit of research online. My yard is fescue and I have read through this thread and will re-read some of the advice of timing for aerating and fertilizing. Any advice yall can offer would be awesome, there is a siteone that's close to my work so I can pick up the fertilizer and stuff from there since they were recommended throughout this thread.

I'm thinking Aerate and seed this weekend. Ground is not dried out anymore, (Thanks Flo) looks like low 80's and cooler next week.

Now is the perfect time of year to aerate, seed, and fertilize. My weekend is already fully booked, so I may be taking a day of ETO next week to get mine done. My lawn is still soggy from the 14" of rain that we received between Sept 8th and 16th.

For the lawn with the high P and K you are on the right track with the 21-0-0 but just ask Siteone what they have that's comparible. And stay away from Starter fert for a while. High P locks up your soil, maybe Guffey can offer more on that. For the garden you could add some fine pine bark soil amendment to lower the pH a bit.

You have to be very careful with ammonium sulfate on new seed, I don’t recommend it until the grass is matured

I am a big fan of Humic Acids, fulvic acids and kelp products for new seeds where P and K are excessive. Humic Acids will release bound up nutrients in the soil and make them readily available to the plant

As far as the garden goes, till in some of what I have pictured, it’s great stuff for reducing ph and adding some organic matter

Thats exactly what I was talking about! Home Depot stopped carrying it but I have seen it at Lowes.

That's what the guy at SiteOne ended up advising. He set me up with some starter fertilizer and 50lb of Lesco blue tag Fescue seed. I'm aerating, seeding, and putting that fertilizer down today. It looks like we'll get rain next week, which should be good for it I think? I'll check out the that soil conditioner as we get closer to starting the garden next year.

I hope your putting pumpkins on all those straw bales and not using it on your lawn

I'm putting it on my lawn, but only on the bare areas. I have some very large bare areas.

I will get a picture of the tag tomorrow. The seed is from Webster brothers hardware in walkertown.

It was $84/bag. I've never used this stuff before. I normally just buy Pennington from Lowe's.

What is the story on using wheat straw?

The near 25% of this area was all crab grass that i scalped with my mower. The far 75% was hard bare dirt. I let this area go for a couple of years while I was building my shed.

This is my septic field that we call the shade garden:lol:. I had a few loads of dirt brought in last spring to even it out, and reseeded it then, like a moron. 99% of it died during the summer. I knew better than to seed in the spring, but did it anyway, so I got the opportunity to do it again, lol.

He's Irish, not Mexican. We eat less of it while we put it out.

How in the hell did you make 15 bales go that far with that good a coverage

I don't know, but they were very big bails bound up super tight. Webster Bros seems to have good stuff.
