Well, thoughts came up in the (a) Tellico thread about a NC Special Interest License Plate.

Typically, these Special Interest plates cost $20 in addition to the normal tag fees. If you want to personalize it, its $30 more.

$10 of the additional fee goes to the supported "organization"

We could potentially choose anything from Rescue Tellico to SFWDA to UFWDA to BRC, Tread Lightly, etc.

Before this could happen, a state legislator must approve of it before its released to the DMV.

In addition, we'd have to have a minimum of 300 orders for the plates before the DMV would issue them.

So, before all the effort is done with the state legislators, etc., what kind of suppport could we expect from the NC 4x4 crowd?

I know I'd get as many as I could for my vehicles. Anyone else up for it???

Also, what "organization" would be supported? Would we need to set up a seperate organization if we can't decide?

Thoughts????

Not sure on what organization. There would probably be alot of different opinions about that. However, if its going towards a good cause to help protect our riding areas i'd be up for one.

I sent letters about this to:

don.davis@ncleg.net and marian.mclawhorn@ncleg.net

Don is District 5 Senate and Marian is District 9 House, which are my local districts (Pitt County). I'm not sure how well they would support it, but please send each of them an e-mail for your support of this cause. They won't act without support, so send them an e-mail for your support of a NC Off Highway Special Interest license plate!!!

once we get good support for this from both sides, we can then decide or develop an organization. Something like UFWDA or SFWDA or Tread Lightly, etc. would be good but we would need to work with those groups to get it worked out as well.

Oh yeah, this was proposed in CA back in 2008 and failed miserably. However, CA is a weird state and they want at least 7500 orders before something would be done, which is A LOT.

I didn't find any other states that did an OHV tag, so we could make some history.

Also, would you guys feel good about combining our efforts with the ATV and motorbike crowd and do something like BRC or do you want to keep it 4x4 related?

I feel like and IMO, That we need all the help we can get! ATV, Motor Bikes, any thing that rides on a trail.

Look at URE, There are OHV, Mountain Bike, and Horse trails. Did I miss any? If they closed URE for example It would affect all of the trails correct not just the OHV.

Edit: i do feel like the tags should be some thing that the non ohv rider would understand. Like TUs it states clearly what thats for. Tread Lightly would get my vote as what on the tag.

It could be a NC specific organization. After looking through the special interest plates, there are plates for Nurses, Square Dancers, etc. so a "conservation" group, I would think, would be a no-brainer for the legislators

Really, an organization could be created just for this cause with a BOD to direct where the funds go towards as I'm sure it would change year to year as the land use battle changes

I think "tread lightly" would be a good pick, It's not state specific as so other states could adopt the same OHV plate, kinda like the VFW,or American Legion plates. well anyhow I'm in for at least two.

i think you hit on this earlier, but presenting ourselves as a conservationalist group (as opposed to preservationalist) makes us sound alot better than "offroaders".

I would be in for one.

I mean even frat/sorority's can get theme plates like this. Can't be that hard.

My fiancee wants the save the sea turtles one, I would be down for a tread lightly or UFWDA one.

Anyone know if they are available as weighted tags?

How about "Trail Lightly" or maybe "Trails Unlimited"

I think supporting United would be the best choice since it's our cause and would go to our interest. Tread Lightly is a good thing but I don't see OHV's at the top of their list of priorities. United could make this a nationwide thing and they would know where the funds are coming from. Therefore United could dedicate said funds back to that specific state's largest need. In our case the fight for Tellico.

I don't see the point in starting a separate 4WDA with its own budgetary needs and resource requirements that diverts attention and money from Southern.

I'm in for a plate.

simple.. so money stays and focuses on NC area.. from outer banks to mountains etc.. only thing southern has focused on in NC is tellico.. and I think other areas need focus in NC also.

yes I am in for a plate also.. shoot I have 3 vehicles
