I’ll go back and walk it off, but I think around 45 yards. I wouldn’t stick a deer on that tree line, it’s out of range. Based on some early observations, most traffic will be coming from directly behind me.

If they are coming from behind you and you don’t feel confident taking a Shot across that open area I’d change stand location to the middle of the opening to one side or the other. I’ve been busted more by deer coming in behind me and not knowing they were there than anything else. Also doesn’t look like you’ve given yourself much cover in front of you. If possible pack up into the woods 2-3 yards with some limbs below and behind you. They will have a harder time picking you out or spotting your movement

One of 4 stands I have. Not my favorite one, but I try to rotate and not over hunt an area. Food plot is just out of view on the left. Call me crazy, but the wind is blowing in my face and I can smell deer. I killed one last week and I distinctly remember how he smelled. I keep getting hints of it in the wind. Not a rut smell but I guess just a deer smell.
 
Out of curiosity, does anyone on here hunt public game lands that would be willing to share tips? I'm close to Butner-Falls of Neuse & my folks live close to Uwharrie, but I've never hunted them due to hearing they're over-crowded. I haven't scouted any areas in those game lands (and wouldn't want to start mid-season to ruin someone's set-up), but I'm not seeing anything right now while all the deer seem to be on acorns. Just thinking about next year and wanted to pick someone's brain...

some of you remember the deer from 4 years ago in the picture we named Reindeer

he disappeared, this new buck is definitely kin, or it may be him, look at the kicker, we aged it at 4.5 four years ago, that would make him 8.5 now, could it be, what do y’all think, my brother is convinced it’s him, me not do much, I am thinking a son
 
Got my stand hung for tomorrow, trails zig zagging all over the little creek bottom, I can see 9 scrapes from my stand. Found fresh poop from last night or this morning. Hoping I see one. After I got my stand hung called a buddy that hunted the same area... turns out he was in a tree 10 yards away from where I’m at and he missed a big one that working the scrape that is 32 yards from my stand.

I agree with @Loganwayne ...doesn't seem to have enough body mass to be 8.5. Good luck tagging him though! If he came within range of me I'd probably shake so bad I'd miss completely!

Get a boat,canoe,kayak and access places far from roads.The peeps coming in from the roads will push deer to you.With a boat you won't be dragging the deer very far, if you kill one far from the boat just get it to the water and bring the boat to it.Also you can hunt on the ground w a muzzleloader during the rifle season in Wake co.and do'nt have to mess w stands.If you bow hunt there's lots of archery only around Butner and some big bucks there.
 
Take getting away from roads with a grain of salt.

We walked over 6 miles yesterday scouting. I’m less than 200 yards from the road and my buddy is less than 50 yards. But that’s where the best sign waa

Also don’t wait to scout or hunt. Get out and find the freshest sign and hunt it. What you find at the end of the year won’t do you any good at the start of the next season. It’s fairly easy right now since most deer are still eating acorns. And pre rut. It’s public so if you get there first then hunt it.

Also look at permit hunts for next year or archery only zones. Both of those will have less pressure and possibly hold more deer.

My roommates hunted in some backyards on Trailwood when we were at State. My other roommate and I hunted a farm on the other side of lake Wheeler. I saw some of the biggest deer of my life over there. I had a wastewater class at the research farm last year and on lunch break I rode over to where we hunted. There is a damn mansion on the ridge I used to hunt.
 
Update on the scout and hunt on public in NC. Had two does come in at 12 but stayed about 60 yards away feeding on acorns. Watched them for about 45 minutes then lost sight of them, last I saw they were feeding away from me. So waited 30 minutes then came down as I need a bathroom break and stretch My legs. Walked towards where they were to look for the trail they came on and stuck my head around a bush and they were broadside at 20 yards no clue I was there. If I would have had an arrow knocked it would have been game over. I slid into creek and splashed real big and they ran off without knowing what splashed. My buddy had a small buck and a doe come in.

Well see what tonight brings.

I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen in the field on the left of the 90* turn, heading towards lake wheeler on Mid Pines.There were about 30 deer in the field just after sundown. I stopped, backed up and shined my headlights on them. There was a buck that was a foot taller than all of the rest and he looked to be 36" wide.
A friend saw a huge buck cross LW just south of penny rd. he turned left and watched the buck walk by the house and on up penny rd till it moved away from the road. He said it was probably 180/90 BC.

I've also seen lot's of huge bucks around Morrisville and RDU over the years.

I've seen public hunting shows where they access by water & I've been thinking of picking up a kayak to do a little fishing without the hassle of trailer/boat parking, registration, etc. I might have to pull the trigger and get one for double duty!

I've heard this too. Look at aerials & maps to get ideas, but scout & follow the fresh sign(s) for your setup. I've talked to a guy in Lumberton who used to hunt the Butner game lands and swore the best hunting was behind people's houses as kids got home from school.

I'm probably over thinking it, but I don't want to ruin someone else's hunt and/or piss anybody off by not knowing where access & parking are....probably need to study the public maps & call a wildlife officer to make sure I'm not out of line. I've done duck hunting on public before, but was with people who've done it before so I could just follow their lead & ask questions before hand to not be as much of a newb. I'm hoping to move closer to my folks next year (i.e. - get away from jerk neighbors) and get some more land, but I'll keep the permit hunts in mind & definitely look into the archery only zones.

That settles it, I'll start looking at maps this weekend while I'm on-call (definitely won't answer the phone while in the stand) and start looking at saddles/climbing sticks & possibly picking up a kayak.

Is public deer hunting like public duck hunting? If you leave a stand out overnight & I show up first tomorrow morning its mine until I leave?
