NC4X4 Hunting and Fishing

I pegged a deer in my truck on Friday.

Broke both it's rear legs. Ended up having to shoot it.

I am modern hunter, hear my muffler roar.
We call that fast food in my family! One year my brother put 7 deer in the freezer and didn't squeeze a single trigger...everybody back home just calls him when one gets hit and if he's close he'll pick them up!

I've brought "tenderized" deer home 4 times. I watched 2 get hit on US-1 in 4 years and they were in the ditch. The others were in 2 lane roads and I stopped just to get them out of a the road and found they were still limp and warm.

Took my brother and nephew fishing the other day.

Where have the turkeys gone.
Just got back from an extended turkey trip. 5 guys boots on the ground we walked over a 150 miles combined and pretty much filtered through 5 counties. Lots of sign and we all bumped into a hen or two. Only one guy got a turkey to gobble.

Finally found a shed in the mountains on public and found the Holly grail of bare dirt tracks, deer turkey, pig and coyote all stepped in the same 2’x2’ patch of dirt.

Took a little break and fished Santee (lake Marion). Fishing was slow and nothing big but it was still a good getaway. There was a guy there when we arrived cleaning one of the nicest catches of brim, blue gill, shell cracker, whatever they call them down there, I have seen. Two coolers full!

Not sure what the fuss is about with turkey hunting. This Tom is in my field at least 5 time a day. I'm a hunter, but I can't bring myself to shoot him, he's so comfortable here. My son found a box call I had and can get him to gobble pretty frequently. Kids gonna be calling them in for me by the time he's 10. He wants to kill him more than I do 🤣

My nephew caught a nice bass yesterday on his 17th birthday. I'm so proud of him, he's like #3 in his class and likes to do stuff outdoors. He doesn't talk very much, I think he's said maybe 2 sentences to me his whole life lol. But isn't a bad thing to me, it just means he's thinking instead of speaking.

4 or five times I've seen Turkey hens feigning they were hurt to lure me away from their nests or poults while I was surveying. I've seen them drag a wing on the ground like they are hurt and can't fly, jump up and down and flap their wings like they can't fly and sling their heads around like they are hurt and run around in circles around me to lure me away. One time I was walking down a power line and I came across a bunch of chicks in the high grass and the hen was not around. I had to carefully step away from them so I wouldn't step on them.

Hit the lake this afternoon. No fish, but a nice float.

Finally got an NC bird this yr on 5/2. Heard this bird gobble @5:53am. I knew about where he was and started climbing through the rhododendron. Got near the peak of the mtn, gave a hoot and sure enough he was just on the other side slightly down hill on the bank. Setup right on the peak, after some conversation and some great gobbling I shot him @20yds at 6:26am. Solid 1” spurs, 19# and NO beard! Guess he was a picky eater like me. It’s said this is from a vitamin deficiency and their beard will become brittle and break off. Never seen one with it this short.

Nice bird. Have killed a couple of birds that had beard rot starting? It’s weird how that happens? Called my daughter off a bird that came strutting in front of us and I couldn’t see a beard? Had a full fan and gobble but no beard. Looking back now, wish I would have let her shoot. Congrats on the bird.

Munchkin Caught some crappie on lake Hampton. I didn't catch anything, and couldn't care less.

Got this one in PA last wk. Birds were quiet all week, very frustrating. We knew where they were, often times set up on one or a few but they just weren’t interested. On 5/13 one of our good friends saw a hen with a full group of poults, that made a little sense. For 6 days straight we would get out of the truck about 5am and hike to a high point and listen. Places we could historically hear a bird a mile or more away, sometimes more than half a dozen between different hill tops, hardly produced a single gobble or 2. On the second big climb of this day, we got to the top of a hill with plenty of sign and sat down for a break about 9am. We messed around and did some team calling for a while before I pulled out my phone and my buddy nodded off. About 10min later I thought I heard drumming. A minute later I heard a spit & drumming. Had to wake my friend up and tell him there’s a Tom in front of us, just out of sight. We got set up, did a little purring and scratching. That produced a couple gobbles but he was still just below us out of sight. Finally about 9:30 he worked our way and stuck his periscope up. Took a long, clean shot and leveled him. We both stepped it off at 53yds. I don’t think I’ve ever killed a bird over 35yds and probably only tried once or twice. I prefer inside 25.

That’s much more than any of mine or my friends so far. Next 6wks are my favorite to watch.
They're about 250 out so I could just barely see a little something on their heads from my kitchen. Got the binoculars and was pleasantly surprised to see how developed they were, that guy in particular. I've never seen them this far along this early
