Just wheeling in after a week long breed national trial. We didn't do so hot but it's what I was expecting when showing up with a 1 year old pup to go against some of the best dogs of this breed in the country.

All the judges we ran under said they were highly impressed with her build and the way she hunted.
The judge from Spain said she was everything she looked for in a young dog and was mad I didn't enter her into the dog show.

Guess we're gonna try again in a month then get ready for another national event in April in Iowa.

look between black mountain and hickory/Statesville. If i was going to buy land for hunting only id look there. that opens you up to "better" seasons (longer doe days) more deer

Agreed. You want to be in the northwestern zone if you're looking to deer hunt. Good deer can be had, and season is long. We don't really have "doe days". It's either sex all season. There's also bear around and plenty of small game. Turkey is tougher though.

Been a slow year for me. I’ve usually tagged out or at least killed a decent buck by now. Big zero this year so far. Deer season has just been me going to the woods to do crossword puzzles on my phone.

I haven't killed a single cute, defenseless woodlands creature yet in the Pisgah near my house...

Although at times I've been tempted to use my .308 on the local squirrel population that keeps me on my toes.

I'm heading to my parents place in Boone this Sat, they are covered up in little deer with baby antlers. No trophies ever to be found, but some meat.

Can’t make it up. Told myself I was climbing down at 10 this morning. At 9:59 I lowered my bow and 30 seconds later two does walk out. My bow is sitting 25 feet below me with no way to pull it back up without getting busted. Just had to sit and watch. DAMN!!!!
Been there and done that.

You at least tried to throw your knife at one, right?!?!?

Cutting up the buck I shot two weeks ago and found the bullet... that I would consider it failed as it came apart. 180 grs. Now weighed 130grs.

Not sure I should be considered about it. As it didn't take a typical bullet path through the deer. Hitting multiple rips along its left side before ending up in the left side hip pocket

That's pretty cool. I've heard of folks taking a handheld metal detector and using it to recover bullets in larger game. (Especially African)

I saw 6 dead deer along I40 yesterday driving to Statesville and back. :(

That's 5 more than I've seen all season.

Doing a little target practice today and I skimmed an arrow off the top of my target. I could only get back to 39 yards but I used the 40 pin. I thought, “it couldn’t have gone far”. Sheeet. That thing went another 40 yards and stuck in a tree about 8 feet up. I was looking all over the ground for the arrow and just happened to see it out of the corner of my eye. The rest were kill shots, but not this little guy.

Been a decent season for me up here in VA. Didn’t draw a Kansas tag this year when results came out in June. Did get a call from Kansas in July and asked if I still wanted a tag. Had to turn it down. They had someone turn their tag back in due to health reasons? It was my sons senior year in high school and I didn’t want to miss any of his football games. I missed the first weekend of black powder season and the first weekend of gun season, something I have never done. We were on recruiting visits to schools.
I did shoot a decent 8 pointer and my dad shot an 11 pointer. Have seen plenty of deer and several nice bucks. My daughter messed up and let a really nice buck walk by her opening day of black powder season. She sent me a video of it. I told her she was crazy. She messed up and I believe got buck fever when he got closer. Still seeing plenty of deer and actually might have seen the one she let walk by this past Saturday night? Have a bunch of does to shoot but usually wait till last week of season.
