NC4X4 Uwharrie Trail Work Day - March 27th 2010

I sent Theresa an update email with the current head count and some other update details. My birthday is this week so as a belated b-day trip I will be hanging out at Uwharrie first part of the day this Friday. Will stop by Arrowhead and talk with Janet about camping, and possibly talk to Theresa about work day details.

Eli I'm more than a maybe. We'll see as we get closer.

Huntclub?
Are you talking about meetin at the gravel parking lot down near the bottom entrance towards daniel/rml?

It is the first gravel lot you come to as you enter the 'official' entrance to URE.

Those are both accurate descriptions. The picture Phat posted should help for anyone that doesn't know. You can't miss the Hunt Camp, you have to pass it to actually enter the forest service road system from the lower entrance. I don't go by it that much anymore since I usually take the upper paved entrance that is across from the Stables.

I haven't heard back from Terry, and spent my B-day afternoon helping a co-worker with her car so I wasn't able to make any phone calls about renting equipment etc. Have had one person offer so far to pitch in to help cover any equipment rentals, just to see what our budget will be anyone else willing to pitch in? I will put in what I can, and hopefully we will have enough for a walk behind if not a skidsteer w/ auger attachment.

I wouldn't make a production out of lunch. I heard that it took too much time away from the chores at hand, although CNC did a masterful job of putting on the feed :) Everybody bring what they want and be done with it, leave more time to actually work.

The "production of lunch" did not take away from the actual work. John from CNC drove in, set up and cooked. CTB was supposed to be there at 12, but as it was with the disorganization we didn't get started to work until around 11:30. Granted we did have about 25-30 min drive over to the feed bag, largely because of a private contractor in a skid steer kept holding us up. He kept on working on water breaks while we were in line to roll on through. Lunch it's self took very little time, we eat, and run.
If you truly want to get the biggest bang out of the time you are there, then organization is your best bet. Knowing what you will be doing, having the tools there to do it, and getting with the FS as to what, in detail, they want done.

Sunbelt rents the skidsteer for 180 a day. Auger is 60 and bit is 25. That is for one with wheels. Track style are 260 a day.

Sunbelt rents the skidsteer for 180 a day. Auger is 60 and bit is 25. That is for one with wheels. Track style are 260 a day.

That is cheaper than out this way for sunbelt, in the Union County area its:

$205 a day for a wheeled skidsteer loader,
$61 a day for the Auger
No listed price for the bit.

Thomas Rentals wants:

$175 a day for the Skidsteer Loader
$45 a day for the Auger
($25 for the trailer)

It looks like a walk behind/mini loader etc or even a terramite will only be $10 less.

I am guessing no matter which way we go for just the rental we are looking at about $250 for either a skid steer or a walk behind and the auger attachment. The other question is do we have anyway to get the equipment to Uwharrie? No use in renting equipment if we can't get it up there.

Hscrugby made a good point via PM about maybe a rental company would give a discount or maybe do it for free/tax write off. So if you are calling around it wouldn't hurt to mention that its for a volunteer trail work day.

Terry got back to me via e-mail and I will be meeting up with her this Friday to take a look at what/where we will be working on Falls Dam/516. So I will also have a nice detailed update this weekend.

I called RS Braswell in Kannapolis and they're about the same price as Sunbelt, but we get the thing for the whole weekend so if we need to come back on Sunday we can.

Here's the break down:

Bobcat S175 $175 per day (choice of flat bucket or tooth)
Auger with choice of bit: $90 (bit sizes go up to 36", he suggested 9" for post holes)
----------------------------------------
Total per day $265 plus tax

MT52 or MT55 Walk Behind: $150 a day (has rubber tracks)
Auger with bit: $50 (up to 36")
----------------------------
Total per day $200 plus tax

I have reserved the Bobcat and auger. I don't see the point in going with the walk behind when the Bobcat can do more and it's not that much more money. I asked about discounts and they don't do any. I am pretty positive I can handle hauling it to and from URE. I've hauled them on my trailer before, but I will see if I can secure a more heavy duty trailer. I will pick it up Friday morning at 7:30am and return it Monday morning.

I need to know what size bit you think we will need? Sizes are 6, 9, 12 and 36 inch. I think there may have been a size in between 12 and 36, but I can't remember what he said. I think if we got the 36" we wouldn't have any problems. Do we want a flat bucket or a toothed bucket?

DRaider, would you be willing to split the costs of the rental with me? I'll haul it for free. If anyone else is willing to chip in that would be wonderful as well. It will make the work day go much more smoothly.

Also, I've got about 20 hours on a skid steer, none on an auger. If anyone has expertise with the skid-steer that would be a huge help. The things are fun, but I am no professional by any means. If you need a computer fixed or your database maintained I'm your guy. :)

Auger Bit Size: Terry mentioned a 9" bit, so I would either go with what she has said or go a little bit bigger with the 12". I can talk to her tomorrow when I am up there and see what she says if you want.

Money wise one person has offered to pitch in, when I find out how much he will pitch in I will add what I can cover to it and get it to you in cash on the work day. I am not rich but I will pitch in what I can, and between him and I we should at least have half covered.

Skid Steer loader wise between many brands including Case, ScatTrack, New Holland, John Deere, Bobcat, and Toyota I have about 1,000 hours. So if no one objects I would be more than happy to bounce around and vibrate to death in the skid loader. Running an auger isn't hard, easier than running a 4 in 1 bucket.

Speaking of buckets we will want a toothed bucket for sure. We won't be doing a lot of smooth grading so having the flat edge bucket won't be worth it.

A big thanks for going ahead and getting the equipment part hammered out. This will be good news for me to relay to Terry tomorrow when I get to see what we will be working on.

You're the designated Bobcat driver! I wouldn't mind learning some stuff if we have time myself. I love heavy equipment, but have never had much of a chance to use it.

I'll wait to hear back from you on the bit and make sure to get a toothed bucket. Do what you can on the money side and I'll cover whatever is left. Perhaps I can claim it on my taxes. :)

I'm also upgrading my trailer. I've been needing a new trailer and I just don't feel like putting the work into my current one. It's like buying a new car to me. :D

Well I went out to Uwharrie today and spent an hour with Terry taking a look at the jobs to do on Falls Dam. I took a couple pictures:

rockyarea.jpg

The largest job we have to do is to block off an arch behind the double mud pit (first 3 pictures). There will be plenty of room left for trail side camping, the railing will block ATVs and other smaller vehicles from making new trails down to the lake etc. There is a lot of guard railing to put up just there.

Then along 516 before the Soup Bowl/Trail Head on the side we will be removing wire fencing that is blocking off some illegal hill climbs and replacing it with guard railing. If there is any guard railing left we will be blocking off the 2nd bypass on the rocky area that is just beyond the double mud pits. Looking at the picture you see the old bypass on the left, the rocky climb in the center, and the new/illegal bypass on the right. I also talked to her about filling in the ruts in the rock in the current bypass so it can be more usable again.

While I was there I also talked with Janet and she needs a head count ASAP for free camping. So if you would like to camp free of charge over the weekend please let me know and I will relay the info, or you can contact her at the www.uwharrieinfo.us site.

From what I saw they have done a good amount of work on the trails, which is good news. The more trail work that gets done the easier it is to keep the trails open. Also from talking to Terry it sounds like they have a lot of work in the years to come with their trail plans.

Also picked up my season pass that I had paid for earlier. This year the passes will be "blaze red":

trailpass2010.jpg

And speaking of trail passes, I also need a final head count for the work day trail passes to relay to Terry. Not to be confused with regular trail passes the work day trail passes allow you to come/go from the trails while they are closed/gated for the workday.

I'm definitely in. :) By the way, I think I'm going to go ahead and get the skidsteer with the tracks. I think it'll be more stable/safer and can do a lot more for us. I'll cover the additional cost. I also bought a new trailer to haul it with so we're golden! :)

Loving the new trail passes! Those are awesome! Wonder if I can go ahead and buy a couple on the work day? I'd like to have a low number like you have. How did you buy yours early by the way?

That is good news on the tracks, because I was looking at the guard railing we will be putting up on 516 and its a steep climb that a skid steer with wheels might flop back on. So this is great. :driver:

The forest service office may have a few left, but I can't guarantee anything. Your best bet as JC mentioned is the Outpost. They have some fairly low numbers there. Also about the trail passes Janet mentioned something important. They don't have the "gloss" covering that last years passes (and previous years) have had. So if you like to save your trail passes you will need to laminate or get a protective covering for this years, or it will just fade to white if its put on the windshield. She said a couple years back they did printed them cheap and they faded.

I'm still in, Been wanting to do a trail work day. What do we need to bring besides our lunch? Mud boots ,Gloves, shovels, picks?Chris Cooper

Here is the list that Terry sent me via PM:

Also, bring ratchet and wrench sets for 1 1/2 inch bolts, rock bars with tamping end, shovels, post hole diggers.

I got a clarification on the bolts, they take a 5/8 socket so if your are bringing wrenches/ratchets that is what you will need. I would bring other sizes also because you never know.

I will bring my ratchet set, but I don't have a lot of hand tools. So if anyone has hand tools please bring them. Even though the Auger will be doing most of the work we will still need to back fill the holes and tamp the ground around them.

As far as the auger bit goes Terry suggest we get a 9" bit, but to me it would make sense to get at least a little bit bigger 12" bit. But I will leave that up to you cltdba. Only thing to keep in mind is the larger the bit we go with the more back filling we will have to do.

And again don't forget if you want to camp for free let Janet know or let me know and I will relay the information to her.

Here is the attendance list:

The large chunk of maintenance gets done in the off-season. Because as you would think, its hard to get maintenance done while the trails are open because of people out riding on the trails. BUT there will be work days set up by the Forest Service this year every month to get the projects done that aren't finished in the off-season. The work day schedule is out I think, if I can't find it I will talk to Terry or Janet.

Set up a poll. Might be easier to keep track. I'll get whatever bit you want me to get. Might be able to get both. Will post more later. Il at dpg right now.

I'm in, unless some work comes in. and planning on camping with hook ups please.

I can ask Janet about sites with hook ups but there are no guarantees. Yesterday she pointed out the sites the CORE guys were getting, and they were 1-5 which all sites without hook ups/electricity. It all depends on how many reservations she has, because with the warmer weather people are starting to come out of the woodwork.

So with a buddy of mine that said he can't make it we are at 7 confirmed and 4 possibles.

We have the skid steer loader/auger covered. So we still need to cover hand tools and lunch. There was some discussion about an organized lunch vs bring your own. Which way do we want to go considering it isn't looking like we are going to have too "huge" of a group. Bring your own Lunch may be the best bet, what do you guys think?
