Old bug as project car for daughter

who's the weirdo with the glasses and cargo shorts?
He needs a haircut.

Shit it does kinda fit the bug stereotype though. Damnit.

time to chop it

What year is it? I learned to drive in a '74. I can still smell the hot vinyl interior.
73. Right around when they changed to that "new" vinyl dash.
Also same year as my (neglected) Bronco.

Similar...although I knew how to drive from tractors and the cattle truck in the field, the first vehicle I drove on the road, and shifted thru all the gears was a 71 beetle. I was 12 and the owner was a 14 yr old 🤣
We drove from Linville Rd all the way to Kernersville and back on back roads with no tags, and no fawks given 🤘🏿🤘🏿

I think we did that every day after school for a week before his mom caught on and hid the keys

My Grandad bought the ‘74 bug I learned in. I helped him cut the body out from behind the seats and put a dog box over the engine. Dropped some mud tires on the back and it was a hunting buggy.

When he welded the dog box on the back I had to climb inside and put the metal with my feet to line it up so he could weld it. I glanced down at my feet during the process because my foot was getting hot. My Chucks had caught fire. 😂

After jumping out and stomping the fire out, he said to get back in, he wasn’t done welding yet. God I miss him!

TIL a super beetle is slightly longer and taller than a modern Mini Cooper.

But mostly because of the way the rear bunoer sticks out

Oh and she's already jumped into the first project, the driver's window was stuck down and the gear just skipped when turning the handle, so she took it apart to investigate

And yup, the track was really crusty. Looks like the gear that drives the line is a sealed unit, so had to order a new one.

I wanna talk hippy shit: but the fact she’s actually wrenching is awesome, @mbalbritton daugter amazes me as well.. I honestly do my best on coaching people into saving money and doing their own repairs. Kudos to these girls
I ordered a jack and jack stands and had them delivered to my daughter’s house unknowingly to her. She called almost in tears she was so happy.

Good for you Dave! And better for your daughter!

At first i thought i was seeing the back of an absolutely slammed mini truck, which really surprised me coming from you. Then saw the furniture dolly
haha yup thats the truck bed just living in the driveway while I address the rusty-ass frame issues.
... which suddenly took a backseat to a second blue car

Love watching this channel, he has a beetle he occasionally posts on. Good on you getting your kid into cars

For our weekly family movie night... Figured the original Love Bug from '68 was the only thing appropriate.

Kids loved it, especially Delaney. Probably been easily 35 years since I've seen this, I'd forgotten how cheesy yet simply fun it was.
I don't think she appreciates how weird it would be for a 1300 cc car to be a winning racer like that
