OVER WEIGHT TICKETS SUCK!

Watch your ass going through Wilkes county on 421 hauling any load. Got pulled with my truck and trailor with the jeep on it Friday night heading to MT.City. Another couple wear pulled over in front of us with their Truck, trailor, and jeep. We Talked to them when we got to Mt. City. Troopers pulled the scales on me. I was grossed at 16,100 pounds. Not saying its not my own fault but my tag was for 7,000 gross. I needless to say will be paying a 540.00 fine for my ignorance. I am going Monday and uping to 20,000lbs tags. The guy and his wife that me and my wife saw pulled also got a ticket of 400.00 dollars. He had a 7000lbs tag also. Lesson learned tags are cheaper than the fine. I was very lucky to be able to drive on to the fourwheeling so the officer was being very fair.
 
damn that sucks. Looks like ill be upping my tags again. I dropped back just this past december to 8000.
 
LoMod & I were both hauling to Mtn.City a few years back. A trooper pulled along side, ran each of our tags on the computer (VERY obvious as I was only doing 35-40 pulling the hill into Boone) and when he saw we were over tagged, sped away!
 
Did you have passenger tags? Like I see on so many 1 tons.

I was told once that my tag was about at it's limit being 12000 lbs now it is 15000.
 
What is a regular tag rated for? If its 7K gross, than I think a lot of us are in trouble.

How does that work? My Landcruiser FJ80 weighs 5500 (at least) and it is rated for 5K trailer weight. Wouldnt that make it illegal to tow even what it is rated for?:confused:
 
:eek: I got lucky the week before last, The diesel was broke down, so I had to tow it with my white truck to the dealer to get injectors replaced (under warranty:rolleyes:). The white truck has had a regular 7k passenger tag since its been sitting in the shop most of the time, while the Dmax ironically had the 16k lbs tag.

Thank God I didn't get pulled on the trip from Raleigh to home in Statesville, and then again to Mooresville to the dealer (Raleigh dealers suck and would not work with me on warranty)

Im guessing total combined weight ~7000 for the white truck, ~7000 for the Dmax, and ~2000 for the trailer, right at the 16k the Dmax is tagged for lol. Oh and 200lbs of snow haha. Maybe they would have gone easy since the truck on the trailer was tagged for the load.:flipoff2:

so did you even have weighted tags?
or are the just regular tags?

I think with an suv you can get by with almost anything. They are more worried about the trucks.
 
I have had my Dually tagged for 26K since about 1999. I would rather have them & not need them than to need them & not have them.You should also have a class A driver's license if your trailer has a GVWR of 10.001 lbs. or more. I've been hearing about ALOT of people getting pulled over by Trooper's in Tahoe's & pulling out the scale's.
 
My tags were 7000lbs weighted tags. They said my truck alone grossed out at 9100lbs. It is an 06 ram 4x4 3500 srw quad cab with an aluminum flatbed and 300 amp diesel welder with oxy/acety, etc. They explained to me that nc dot gives you 9000lbs on a tag before it is required to be weighted. Well why the hell do they sell 7000lbs weighted tags. I am done with the b.s. just gonna bump up to 20000lbs and be done.
 
Yeap We were the other couple that got pulled, I think Travis and I are funding the NC dot this week,lol.
The trooper asked me if any body else was coming up through there (like I was going to say oh sure they should be coming through any minute now)wow :fuck-you:. This is just a money grab so if your towing up 421 be legal. I bet it will catch on and it will start happen in more and more locations due to the state being strapped for cash.
 
20k is going to be an expensive tag (every year) if you don't ever plan on towing that heavy. They should have never given you a 7k tag for that truck, but their computer tells them whether or not you should have a weighted tag based on the GVWR of your truck from the mfr. That 9k lbs is GVWR and that is just above what most 1/2 ton trucks are rated at. Obviously your truck is more than 7k in stock form, and as you now know you were illegal rolling down the road with no trailer. As you also know now, the HP/DMV tahoes aren't sitting at weigh stations and driving around to give speeding tickets...they all have portable scales and are there to make money off of mostly honest people. In NC not only do you have to tag your trailer, but you have to have the truck tagged for any weight you might ever tow as well--suv's don't have to worry about it though. Then of course there are commercial tags...which you might want to look into if you're using your truck/trailer for work purposes like it sounds?

There has been a sticky on "weighted tags" at the top of this forum for a couple years now, might take a look at it now before you get fucked again. I think they purposefully make it tricky and give out very little info on the subject.
 
I have a 2001 E-250 van and pull a 18' trailer with either the yj or xj. what do you figure I weigh??
 
FWIW,my dmax dually and 18' trailer (empty) weigh in at 10,600#. Got a 18000# tag.Need to put my jeep on a diet!:driver:
 
Find the nearest truck stop with some CAT scales and pay the $8 and weigh yourself. I'm tagged at 15k. G3500, 22' trailer with Jeep.

I hear people reply on what 'they' do or don't do when it comes to weighted tags... Your choice but if your not legal, your not legal..
 
Yeah... I dropped my 26K weighted tag when it hit $400+ dollars a year.
In my way of thinking, if I can go 18 months or more between tickets I'll be saving money.
 
how much does a ticket cost? do they do it by amount overweight? curious on this. i have a standard tag on my f-250. had no idea about weighted tags. it is stupid that a private vehicle has to be weighted.
