Portable generators.....

Again have you punched the end of the pipe?
Just take a screw driver . The little muffler rusts out. The rust partiuckes get caught in the spark arrester as it gets warmer things expand and exhaust can't get out.

If you can crank it and then punch it. Watch the spark fly and it should sing.

If not that carb float soak, and then plug are fouling are about the only 3 big issues

Ive often wondered why more people don't use dual fuel generators or convert there's to dual fuel. Never have to worry about gas gumming up and 2 100lb tanks would last a looong time in a 3500-8000 watt generator.

Propane gums stuff up, too. It just takes a little longer. Back when we bought our mobile generator for the camper, we looked at the propane options. They used a little bit more fuel per hour, but the tanks were huge and didn't hold as much fuel/volume. I have 25 gallons of gas on-board and another 20 in cans, which is more or less the same as 200lbs of propane. I'm expecting it to last a few (3-4) days with intermittent use. If I need more, I can get it at any gas station. Filling a propane bottle won't be as easy.

Just my 02

This plus you cant siphon propane as easily. And in cold climates you can actually run into problems with propane not vaporizing quick enough.

There were a shit pile of people at Lowe's tonight buying generators.

Nobody was buying gas cans.

I have 45 gallons on hand. It should be enough for a few days.

I have 55 :flipoff2:

I didn't plan on needing that much until I looked up the fuel consumption of the new generator I picked up, went from a 8kw to 17kw and I didn't realize how much of a difference there was.

just got done cleaning the tank and carb out on a 10000 watt genrac gen set with 0.2 hours on it.
that right 0.2 hours--the owner (not me) bought it 3-4 years ago put gas in and started it up
just to make sure it worked. she shut off the fuel valve but did not run it till it quit.
gas tank is steel and was rusty as shit--carb gummed up but within 2 hours i had it purring
like a cat.

DRAIN YOUR GAS TANKS AFTER USE AND RUN UM TILL THEY QUIT.

damn now i'll smell like dead gas all day.

That's the problem with bigger gens. Depending on the size delta, you could use more gas at no-load than a smaller gen would use at full pull. Gotta right-size them for the best efficiency per watt.

That GP17 has a 992CC engine.
That thing is darn near a 4 wheeler. And if you have ever picked one up by yourself...Well it will turn your nuts into boot soles. I think shipping weight is like 510 lbs.

If it didn't have wheels, I would SOL. I was gauging how much fuel I needed and decided to look up the run times of this one. At 50% load it says 10 hours (and it holds 16 gallons ) That's when I went out and got a few more 5 gallon gas cans ad filled them up.

@Ron , should I leave the idle control on or off when I am firing up the 5 ton AC unit?

Agreed, this may be a little too inefficient, but it should run the entire house including both AC units and water heater... hopefully :D

It sure as shit ought to. I can run a 4 ton gas pack and an electric water heater on a 5500w mobile gen. Not at the same time, but I don't need them both at the same time. A full tank of hot water lasts a couple of days, and reheating after a shower only takes a few hours.

@Ron I recently pick up a generac g2600 for a song. The fuel tank is in pretty bad shape inside. I put some new fuel lines on it with an extra filter right out of the tank and flushed the tank with atf/brake cleaner and it runs great. I cant seem to find a replacement tank for it. For now, I just have extra filters but I would like to put a new tank on it. Should I just rig up a plastic tank or is there a more stock option that would fit inside the frame rails?

Send me the serial number. That model has had 3or4 configurations.
I can get a tank for you

that serial number is coming up invalid.

You got a welder, right?

I have a cheap dog in this discussion... I picked up a harbor freight 8750/7000 predator generator a year ago next month and recently had it side by side with a Honda 7000 watt of same size and it bogged less than the Honda was multiple hand tools and welder on it! I will say tho the Honda exhaust is amazing and the constant power in the Honda generator seemed stronger but the ole 7000 pred has held up through 23 days straight of use in power outages and non stop use the last 3 months with hand tools, power washing heaters!!

@Ron what is the big difference between the generac iq2000 and gp2200i. Ive been needing a little generator for general camping use and possibly keep the fridge and deep freezer running during power loss.

Did a test run/break-in run for 15 mins. Put the oil in it and pulled it slowly a few times, it fired up on the third pull, smoked a bit until I took the choke off and then it hummed. No knocking and not as loud (no load) as I thought it would be. On the back deck I can barely hear it in the den, in the bedroom it's quiet enough hum her asleep. We have a glass sunroom w a sliding door and I'm thinking I can park it right at the door and point the exhaust out the door if I need to run it when it's raining.

The iq was designed to be the Honda killer. Code named yoga during development.
I have 2 of them they work fine. Then they came out with the gp22 this year. Slightly more surge capacity, I like the form factor better personally, it has usb direct charging ports on the front and it's msrp is slightly cheaper.

I can't tell what the drawback is to the gp, but I haven't peronsally put one through its paces yet either.
