Not so much red tape as much as DENR. More than a shovel of dirt moved and there has to be a lengthy study, spotted owl search, erosion impact....etc

Probably why it won’t happen for a while. Fingers crossed they prove me wrong.

The impact studies have been done. Our biggest issues is Arch sites but supposedly its been done too. There's a special Arch team that can come in to survey the site while planning the route, BUT they can stop the plans in a second. Debra Walker was working the situations and making progress but she did not let it go down the wrong path... I would say that things are slow now because she is gone and its a whole new ballgame and everyone in charge is finding their way. We may or may not get this trail or the other things that the grants are for.
Go to URE, do a work day, clean up trails as you go, report violators. That's all we can do...

I have always wondered, why can't they just go in and find all the archaeological crap and remove it? Is that what they do and it just takes them forever or is there a reason to leave the shit in place instead of a museum?

I'm working with a hysterical architect.....I mean historical....on union station project in Winston. If "one of those" ever heard you say something like that, they'd commit harakiri right on the spot :lol:

I can understand wanting to preserve history but it shouldnt be at the expense of progress. A good example is this total shit hole of a building on campus at the school I used to work at. Its the oldest building on campus so the alumni association or whatever they are called wont let it get torn down. Meanwhile it cant even be occupied safely by students or staff so it sits empty as fucking eyesore on campus. It could be renovated, but they say it would cost too much to bring it up to code then it would cost to simply knock it down and start fresh.

I've said this on the last 9 projects we interviewed on (dumbass renovations). Headed to another one at 3 with a firm to "renovate" the only portion of a hospital that is to remain that was built in 1951. Their budget only allows for $94sqft and the part that is getting knocked down houses the entire mechanical/electrical service. I've told both teams "figure $60sqft JUST in P/M/E"

12ft floor to bottom of roof deck. SCO project (lots of requirements)

I hope like hell I don't get this job (we're shortlisted with 2 architects of 4 presenting)

I'm telling them "I LOVE BEER" in hopes they vote against me

There's no way to find it all. In their opinion, they are in the best museum they could be in. Some of these artifacts have been there for centuries, even thousands of years. The Uwharrie Mountain range has a special type of rock that is easy to make tools and weapons with and the Indians traveled from far away to get it for use and trade. There have been artifacts found as far away as Nova Scotia and the southern tip of Florida that are from here. I even read that Morrow Mountain is 6' lower at the peak due to so much collecting of the rock.
 
Last I checked it was approved but I have not been to any workdays recently.

Doubtful that we will see any new trails opened. The advocates for the OHV trail system are just not there like they used to be, not that the chances of new trails were great when we had more advocates. I could see more trails closing, especially the harder ones until the whole place is nothing more difficult than the service roads.

On other great news. The construction of the Lakeview Trail should be starting next week. The contractor is set and we’ve had the pre-construction meeting and they are getting a surveyor out next week to work out the final alignment before they begin to construct it. It is very important for you to help us KEEP PEOPLE / RIDERS OFF THE TRAIL DURING CONSTRUCTION. Please help us keep people off of the site while the construction is going on so they do not damage the contractor’s work. If you see or hear of people getting into the area please let me know as soon as you can so I can our LEO out there.

Agree, that's why I called them "permanent closures" even though Kodak was "temporary".
 
I phrased that wrong. This is a new trail under construction which exactly matches the posted map earlier in this thread. They pulled some of the wood guardrail down close to the vault toilet and have cut a completely new trail that comes out closer to where Wolf Den meets Falls Dam.

I hiked that with Scott Fields. While it would be great to get back, I never wheeled it, the hydrologist with us basically said it would be near impossible.
