White Noise

Wow that trailer looks huge!! What size is it?

Noah, it is a 20ft overall, 18' flat, 2' dovetail. 2 4000 pound axles, overall weight 2600 pounds.

A pic of the Tahoe hooked up to the trailer.

The Tahoe did pretty good towing the jeep around town.

Clay. Everything looks good. Also wanted to tell you that you better get some chains and binders if you have not yet. Much safer plus the DOT will rape your ass if you don't have grade70 or better chain. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Northern Tool has kits with two chains and two binders real reasonable.

Travis, I am not sure the best way to tie the jeep down. I will take any pointers because right now I have four 3,333 break strength 25' ratchets from Northern. I am not sure what binders are, are they the loops around the axles?

Binders, aka Jawbreakers, are a means of tightening and securing chain tie downs.

There are as many "best" and "right" ways to tie down a trailer load as there are people :)
Personally I like to tie each corner of the towed vehicle to the opposite side of the trailer, this makes the straps/chains form an X when looking at the front or rear of the rig.

FWIW, I have been towing rigs all over the SE for the last 30 years and have never been stopped for not having a grade 70 chain. Chains are a good idea, don't get me wrong. I have them and use them occasionally, I just don't know for a fact that they are required.

I am heading to Northern tomorrow, probably pick up a chain for the front and one for the rear, then use two straps as well.

I just hope all state troopers around here know that the Tahoe doesn't have to have a weighted tag, or I may be in for a long drive to Harlan at the end of the month from being pulled over 100 time

heading to Harlan on Thursday for GSSE!

Will do, gonna clear out the camera tonight haha

Well I am heading to GSSE on Thursday, so I have been tieing up the last loose ends on the jeep recently. So this evening a neighbor stops by my house to show me his new-to-him mustang GT. It is white and has a cobra hood on it, Hurst shifter, small programmer, and he is very proud of it.

He wants to show me how the exhaust sounds so he cranks it up. What he doesn't realize is he left it in gear, so he is just barely in the car with his left foot on the outside and his right foot on the clutch to start it. Since he thinks it is in neutral he begins to step out of the car, as he does, the car lunges forward. Not so bad huh? Well it wouldn't have been if he hadn't parked directly in front of my jeep (less than 12" between the noses of the two cars when he pulled up). So he basically drives directly under the ARB bumper, with my d-rings slicing directly into his hood. The only thing that stopped his car was when he hit my tires (under the jeep). Luckily for me, he didn't smash my tie rod, just a little tweak that probably would have happened this weekend anyway. The GT was not so lucky, the d-ring tab on the ARB sliced his hood about a foot long, the fiberglass just splintering. His front bumper was smashed against my front tires.

I just had to laugh, because it is just my luck someone hits my jeep in my driveway two days before a big trip

sounds like good carnage already! Have a safe trip Clay!

Had an awesome time in Harlan this past weekend for Grand Slam South East. Met some cool people and had a blast wheeling.

Anyone recognize this rig? It was the 5.9 ZJ build on TRUCKS, Ryan from the show now wheels it and has put D60s under it. On a side note, Ryan is real cool guy and very down to earth.

Good pix, and looks like a great time. I haven't been able to make a Grand Slam since they moved it from Tellico, but hope to make it up there to Harlan in the future. How well did you do locked f&r with the 35's? Thats how I want to be set-up when I make the trip.

In my opinion 35s are the min tire size to have a good time at Harlan. I did see one ZJ on 35s locker f&r do more things than a locked Zuk on 40s do. A lot of the trails require a good technical driver (which is not me yet ;)). I certainly did not feel left out, and almost all the hard obsticles have a bypass.

The Tahoe did better than I expected. I did pull a few hills at about 20mph with the pedal to floor. Other than that it did pretty well.

I can't seem to get the jeep level. I have played with 1" coil spacers and the original coil spring spacer. I am about to look into ACOS, anyone have any experience with them?

Went to URE yesterday and met up with oldblue, 95GranZJ, and Crusty. We had a great day up until about 4pm.

We started on Daniel, and had a great time. The we talked Kodak, and had a blast on all the trails.

A couple shots first thing of the group

Then the "excitement" happened

ai358.photobucket.com_albums_oo27_CW_2009_URE_208_14_10_018.jpg

We were going down the trail, I had the windows up and the A/C on, and we heard some pops. We just thought it was the Aussie in the front ratcheting like all lunch box lockers do. Well it wasn't. That sound was my wheel studs snapping. All but two snapped off and the two remaining ones were bent and just barely holding the wheel on.

Apparently my lug nuts had worked them selves loose and the pressure from the 2.5" backspacing wheels combined with some good wheeling and a locked front end were just too much for the studs.

We jacked up the front and surveyed the damage. A long story short oldblue and 95GrandZJ drove all the way to the Advance Auto in Albemarle and got me five studs and four lug nuts. Brought them back and we were able to use four studs and four lugs to get the wheel back on and get the jeep back to the trailer.

I can't thank Crusty enough for his help and for oldblue and 95GrandZJ for going and getting the wheel studs.

All in all we got back to the trailer around 6:30pm.

On to some more pics.
