Bourbon

My dad was showing me his scotch list from the PR yesterday. He says the best one he's had there was Bladnoch 25.

Old and lowland, from the southern-most distillery, seems right up @UTfball68 alley. ;)

I've had the Alexander Murray & Co 25yr from the Blandoch distillery, about a $200 bottle, and I'll absolutely drink that. The Blandoch Talia 25yr, at $500, I'm not enough of a Scotch guy to spend that yet. On that note, buddy of mine is a Scotch guy, did some taste testing and you're right, Speysides ain't too shabby either...still can't seem to find a consistent profile I like though.

I think I need to get with @WARRIORWELDING before I bring you down a gift Ben :huggy:

Not really a drinker, but Ive been debating getting a bottle of something just for shits n giggles. No idea where to even start. But I think I might try some of the cheaper stuff listed here.

very old Barton is dang good for the money I’ve got friends that can’t tell the difference between it and buffalo trace and the VOB is only 22 a half gallon

In my younger days, I used to drink Dickel a lot. #12 specifically. I liked the smoothness over #8 and definitely over regular Jack Daniels. It was a good deal most times and mixes well if you're into that. Nowadays, I still have ole George hanging around but I've refined the palate.

A good sipping whiskey is Buffalo Trace. Not too bad on the wallet and pretty smooth.
I acquired a bottle of Weller last year before they put it on reserve and the price skyrocketed. That one doesn't get broken out unless we're tight.
I've had Four Roses single barrel. I wasn't overly impressed.
Blanton's is good.
1792 was meh.
Elijah Craig barrel proof was pretty good. I dropped one cube in and that seemed to really open up the flavor for me.
I had a buddy of mine hook me up with one called Old Scout. It's a good sipping one IMO.
Knob Creek is pretty good but stay away from the maple bullshit. I couldn't finish the bottle. I gave it to my wife to use in baking.

I've had others but none that stick out. Some of the long standing ones like Jim Beam is like water to me. Not saying I won't drink it if offered but nothing exceptional. Wild Turkey seems to always get good reviews but I'm not a fan. Not even of the rare breed. It's got too much bite for me on the backend. Maker's Mark is OK and whatever that version they put out ("46" I think) didn't make me want to scramble for another.

My old boss, and very good friend is the sole largest consumer of dickel in the last 10 years. He caught wind of the POSSIBILITY of it being eliminated 10 yrs ago and bought 48 cases in 3 days
I've been to tullahoma 4 times (on a motorcycle) with him and a dozen other friends, and had dinner with the master distiller for dickel 2 of those trips.
In his garage/mancave he's got every dickel collectable you can imagine.
I say all that not to name drop or chest pound...but to preface how much he loves dickel
It's too rough for me to drink straight. But not a bad mixer.

Not makers fan, even the 46, The rest I agree100%
Elijah was a bit too.....flavorful...and then I too added a big ass cube and liked it more.

It is a good mixer. I put in my eggnog this year :huggy:

I forgot to mention the barrel select from Dickel. I really liked it. Now I haven't had it in a while but from what I remember it wasn't too bad.

Buffalo Trace, Benchmark, all of the Old Foresters (Statesman or Prohibition are my favorites), Evan BIB (actually, all the EW bourbon), OGD BIB, Willet pot still, Elijah Craig...my list goes on and on. If I had to pick one or two......I'd say Buffalo and Old Forester Statesman.

Anybody in the Charlotte area finding any Buffalo Trace on the shelf?? My local dot store is ALWAYS sold out. And I go to church with the stock guy.....

Basil Hayden or trusty ole green label Evan Williams

My wife surprised me with a Conviction Bourbon tour, was really cool, and they are a small operation with some good Bourbon. Cool facility old cabarrus county prison, hot box still there, an old sink (trough?!!) was converted to a hot water tank, two stills pictured are all they run.

FYI...caught wind some counties are doing Private Select bottle. Thought it was pretty cool, so snagged the finish Rowan County went with...

It’s actually pretty similar to a finish I did during a group buy. Should be pretty good for a Maker’s Mark drink.

Anyone use one of these personal barrels? Its 1 liter and charred to a medium Char. Little bit of research some are putting cheaper wiskeys, bourbons and in 3-4 weeks smoothing it out. Or adding a vanilla bean. Looking forward to tasting it each week as it "ages".

Air and age in general, plus rolling the bourbon over itself, tend to mellow out harsh liquors. The wood might do some more beneficial alcohol/flavor leeching that a decanter wouldn’t to tame things down. I’m not big on my liquors being ‘over oak-ed’ so I tend to stay away from these barrels...but I do have buddies that like doing ‘infinity barrels’ that really enjoy the creations they come up with.

Where did ya source that?

Wouldn't it need to sit in there awhile (months) to really be useful?

The surface area to volume, shortens the time, I'm wondering about the oak flavors too. It is charred so the carbon will help.
I think it came from Freedom Oak. But there are several others on Amazon.

Depends on what you’re after...ever take a swig right off the top of a fresh bottle, and it burns...but leave the bottle open for a an hour and let it breathe and it’s smoother. Same type of deal here, and as noted you’ll leech some flavor and alcohol. To truly change the profile of the drink, you’re looking at 2+ years unless you get fancy with sonic turning and then you can expedite the process.

@UTfball68
Just want to know how to use it to make a bottle of Johnnie Walker taste like a McCallans 18yr. [emoji38]
