NC has less than 130 usable days of solar every year (clouds.. etc) despite the solar farms you may see around

We tried solar in the late 70's and 80's. Hicks water stove attempted to supplement their systems with solar to " help"

About everyone that fell for that abandoned those solar panels and kept using the wood stove portion till they got too old to start a fire every 3 days.

Every solar or photovoltaic system I've been forced to design was abandoned or scrapped in 10yrs or less.

Just my experience 🤷🏿‍♂️
The question is how close to or over the edge will we be pushed before the Gov abandon's it??
 
The real problem with solar is house much land it takes to produce usable power.
1 megawatt of power is needed to power 164 houses.
10 acres of solar farm is needed to produce 1 MW.
Now think about how many houses are in your town!

Unless you put the panels on house roofs.
I know several people getting 100% of their needs that way. It obviously depends on all kinds of factors but helps a lot with the space problem.

And all of that land could be used for trees or farming. Then the pannels continuously loose efficiency as they gather dust and the plastic they’re made of deteriorates in the sun, so they need regularly cleaned and replaced. Not to mention the mining for materials for the batteries that also have a service life so you have power at night. An electric car can be sold for 2x what a gas burner does and so why wouldn’t a company/ politician/ investor want people to buy into an emerging market it’s easy money! The wind turbine craze ended as soon as gvt subsidies dried up because return on investment was negative. The whole green agenda is an attempted grift.

Diesel or gas electric hybrid with small battery bank as used on trains developed by ge does make sense (Toyotas hybrids use this model) but fully electric cars are a joke

I have a buddy doing that…broke down the expense with him. He’s been 100% solar for 3 years. Looks like year 12 is where he breaks even, with a 20yr life expectancy of the system. And he’s in a new build, with green/efficiency being the focus of his 2500sq/ft. What couldn’t be factored (because we didn’t know), is the drop off in efficiency over time. And then what happens if you’re home isn’t energy efficient or bigger? I’m not against the progress or advancement in tech, just skeptical of folks saying they’re getting this credit or that credit and not paying the power company so they’re saving all kinds of money. I’d imagine for most, it’s a break even proposition over a decade or two unless they’re getting the system for free.

Serious question that always crosses my mind on the roof solar panels, what kind of pain in the arse it must be when it’s shingle replacement time. I also hate the idea of more holes in the roof to mount panels. I have enough trouble with leaks from shoddy roofers I can’t imagine the quality of installers of roof brackets for solar panels. I love the off grid aspects and idea of not having to rely on the power company though.

It is worth noting, in my last neighborhood, everyone that got solar, also had a new roof put on at the same time. I suspect the shingles and solar panels have a similar life expectancy that is often characterized as "not my problem" as most people don't live under the same roof for 30 years.

The wife and I have talked about it, we would only entertain it if we could manage it in a field or on a shed/carport roof. I have no interest in signing up for the issues outlined above.

That'll be your LOW bid...the guy that puts a roof over your existing roof. Get 3 numbers and you'll be shocked
