OVER WEIGHT TICKETS SUCK!

Is there a fee to change your weight rating, besides the upcharde for additional rating? I'm sure you can't get the minimum weighted tag, then Thursday before the wheeling weekend, upgrade a few klbs, then downgrade Monday and possibly get a refund. Maybe they'd make you turn in the tag for a refund and hit you with another fee to re-register the truck. Who knows, its the state DMV, I don't get the feeling any of this is well thought out

I asked today when I got mine and she said If I wanted to upgrade my weighted tag I would just have to pay the difference in price betwen the tags.

I've thought that many a time...but never followed through...

I have upped my weight before, and just pay the difference (no "fee" of any kind)...

I have also reduced my weight before, but only at time of renewal...

you can obviously wait til you need it to increase it...just not sure about getting a partial refund when you lower it...

I'm finally getting around to getting my trailer registered/titled. I went to the DMV and got the paperwork with the # I need to stamp on the tongue and rear axle. I got the # stamped on the tongue but need to grind a small smooth spot on the rear axle to stamp it so that it is visible.

Anyway, they lady at the DMV gave me a # of the inspector out in Hillsboro that I need to call and I guess I will end up taking the trailer out there for him to inspect.

Should I take the trailer out there with a different truck than my dually (since its obviously straight piped, and has regular tags at the moment), or will the vehicle pulling the trailer not be taken into any kind of consideration?

Depends.. it that a trooper barracks? If so, that's like the dumbass who went to file a police report while having an open arrest warrant...

I'll just use my moms/sisters truck, they use it for pulling the horse trailer and around the farm so it has a weighted tag on it.

I have a commercial Farm tag on my CTD, w/ 20k on the plate. It's a fraction of the cost per year you guys are talking about. Just wondering if there are restrictions on these plates, as far a highway useage, that I don't know about. I did a brief google search and didn't come up w/ anything.

In SC they don't make any distinction between "FARM" tags and "TRUCK" tags, so it would simply be a matter of weight coverage (which I don't think you have enough of yet).

I don't think the Highway patrol is going to stop you to ask what you do with your truck during the work-week (verifying it's a FARM truck), so I wouldn't sweat it.

BTW, SC TRUCK tags covering 16k lbs per year runs me ~$265. I better do some f'n wheelin this year

Farm Tags in SC go by this: Used exclusively for agricultural, horticultural and dairy operations or livestock and poultry raising. If the farm vehicle has an empty weight of less than 7,500 pounds it may be used for general and domestic purpose but cannot be used for hire. Fee is determined by weight.

My truck is tagged at 25,000 lbs, and I surely better be wheeling this year!

Farm tags are cheaper because your not supposed to be on the road as much with them as a regular weighted tag.

I got the tag for my Dodge today.....370 bucks for a 15klb tag. I'm gonna go back and upgrade it. I should have done it today but I was a little overwhelmed by the price. This tag will cover my truck and rig but not the trailor.....I need an 18k tag

Your dodge almost certainly weighs well under 7klbs. You must be pulling a heavy fawking trailer. :flipoff2: Go weigh everything before giving the state anymore money...

Should have pulled it with an Excursion...:flipoff2::lol:

That..or an RV .

What? You're a 15 year old with a learners permit and have a 30' toyhauler and a bass boat to pull as doubles?? No problem, just buy an RV...
:flipoff2:

When I uesed to drive big trucks I have goten tickets for over weight with portables and got out of them because the scales are not accurate or certified by weights and measures .
Also why in the hell are they weighing nocommerical trucks any way. I belive I would fightit with an attorney

I can't figure out why I passed a Tahoe the other day that had a weighted tag.

My 06 2500 CTD has 6190 as Curb weight on the reg. and I have mine tagged for 8k. But I also have a specialty plate that doesn't have any weighted markings. I've seen some F250s with normal tags. I wouldn't think the DMV would let you get normal plates for something like that.

I've only towed once going out of the state and who knows when the next time will be. I'm sure it'll take a ticket before I up mine. NC is pretty ridiculous I had no idea what this property tax was on the vehicles that I had already payed to register. I still haven't payed the one on the jeep. The tow man is probably driving around looking for it i'm sure. hehe.

I got stopped in travelers rest last tuesday morning about 3am for 61 in a 45. I guess the guy felt bad for me since I told him I was coming from Ft. Lauderdale. (no towing) probably first warning i've ever got, which was a relief since the insurance company gouges me on the speeding tickets from years ago. That weren't even in NC. grrr.

I think it depends on where you get the tag. The DMV office here in Raleigh knows, but they only go by their curb weight numbers which are bullshit. I think they're for stripper/reg cab/short box 2wd, etc. They will definitely allow you to put a 6k tag on a truck that weighs 7400# empty. It's up to you to know what your junk weighs and make sure you have a tag to cover it.

I guess its just my poor assumption that a gov. office would be useful. My registration went smoothly other than than they had a problem with the VIN on the jeep which we've been the only owner of. I had to go home and write it down to verify.

I've seen reports of the curb from 6200-7000, so who knows. Trying to find similar ones to mine. Guess the only way to really know it is to weigh it.

Heads up, I saw on the local news this morning that the weight police are gonna be heavily on the prowl the next couple of weeks. Something about a crack down on checking for overweight vehicles in NC and neighboring states. It said that they are mainly focusing on Tractor/trailer, but ya never know who they might decide to pick on.

This isn't about weight it's about width. I was told (Truth or not?) they are cracking down on guys pulling boats that are to wide w/o wide load signs. This came from a trooper. Anyone else heard this? I think this is happening mainly down east.

weighted

On the way back from Mtn City last week, I had the PO-PO on 421 riding beside my tow rig and trailer for two miles. He was busy looking at something.
Plus the fact that I passed a truck doing 60mph probably made him pull out from where he was sitting! He passed me, but I thought I'd have gotten a speeding ticket.
I have weighted plates, set very close to what I tow. Including the toolbox and firewood.
N. Wilkesboro area...busy with the po po fo sho!
