Chasing a dream

Apple Air Tags. You can make them make a sound to find them, so I figured if I made one fairly easy to find and others super hard to find I stand a better chance of tracking it for a longer period.
Unless the thief also has an iPhone?

Correct. This is why there’s multiple in different locations. They’ll either have to spend enough time in place hunting for them that they’ll give up, without taking it or they’ll find the first one, or the second one and think they are good after destroying it or ditching it, and take off only to quickly discover there’s still more. And one would have to disassemble quite a bit to get to some of them.

If a thief wants something they’ll take it. Any prevention is just a deterrent to slow them down or discourage them.

I’m not saying it’s a full proof way to track or anything. But for $30/tracker with no monthly fee it’s easy peace of mind. I have them on my truck, buggy, camper, and generator. 1 iPhone can have up to 16 air tags linked to it.

Along with this, have you been able to get insurance on the buggy? I saw on FB where you were trying to get it tagged?

There was some confusion with that post. I wasn’t trying to get tags, that was required just to transfer the title to NC. Which was denied and I need to call about.

I'm sure you know this but keep in mind they only work if somebody has an iphone near by, if somebody really wants to take them there are easy ways to defeat them. So if the thief has android, you are kind of SOL.
Real GPS trackers cost a bit more, but are way more secure.

Gotcha. Getting it titled and insured seems like it would take some worry of being stolen, to me.

If he manages to get it insured - especially without tags- then mobile income will be no problem. If you can get an insurance company to cover vehicles off road, out of state and without tags you are covered for a few years for compensation

Why would you need a physical inspection to get the title? Can't you just walk in with the notarized title and have it transferred?

If the thief only has Android then they won't get the ping that the tag is there either, and Philip will know it has moved - assuming that at any point there was a, iPhone nearby.
It's a huge gamble. If thief is Android user then it pays off. If thief is iPhone user it doesn't.
On a capitol expense like this buggy I'd think the cost of a proper tracker would be worth it. Plus if you get the right device it would be convenient for tracking trail behavior etc later anyway.

Because it was titled as a 78’ suburban and since it is an antique vehicle they said it had to be checked out to confirm everything.
So now I’m getting what is basically a SxS title for it, and if I were to add turn signals I could actually get it tagged and registered.

I told them I just wanted the title, and wasn’t worried about a tag and they said it had to be examined by the inspector regardless.

I agree with this and plan to get something hard wired soon. The air tags were just simple and easy to start with.

If I was living on the road, I would move all my licenses, tags, etc to Montana in a hurry.

That would create a massive headache for me and add zero benefit.

Yup, everything 30+ years old has to be inspected when brought in from out of state, to be titled. Keep us updated on the sxs title route. Reading the requirements, it looks like a buggy would easily fit, but not sure what that process might look like for a "non-sxs". Insurance is likely an option then too, but there arent many companies offering it.

I'd especially do it if I had a suburban that looked an awful lot like a custom made buggy.

Keep in mind just bc you can get tags for a SxS in some states those tags will not be recognized as a street-legal vehicle everywhere.

The benefit is you can get real plates and no taxes.

Yeah.

That's a hell of a benefit.
It might not be worth it if you already have plates and have already paid your taxes once in NC, but if its a new purchase needing them the first time... why not?
Plus in NC you pay property tax on registered vehicle right? That goes away too.

I really don’t have much desire to tag the buggy, maybe some day but I’m not concerned about it at this time. I would however keep my eye out for a YJ title and VIN which would simplify things.

As for the state change, that would create issues with our homeschool program, my wife’s employment, how we get mail and more. I see what you are saying and it would have some benefits I suppose but we aren’t having any issues with anything at this time so no need really.

You old people don't know how to internet.
App made BY APPLE for Android to detect airtags. Yet not on the i-cult network, so not communicating the tag location back to the i-cult.

Can you move your license to MT and she keeps her NC one?

I think it's the opposite...without another iphone nearby it has no way of letting him know it was even moved let alone where it is currently. But also agree something is better than nothing.

Yall making this too complicated--no need to get an MT id or change wherever your current mailing address is for school/work/everything else. Tag the truck, trailer and buggy in MT and enjoy not dealing with safety inspections, or NC silly registration fees and taxes anymore.

I thought I heard that some insurance will not cover you if your stuff is tagged in a state where your license isn't? But that also seems crazy since people do it all the time, and actually our RV falls under that situation.

Nc farm bureau doesn't care, at least on a business policy. They insure the vin and the vehicle, as long as you meet MT minimums--and driving a setup like that I'd have far higher than minimums.
