Daniel ?

On the getting the rock in there do yall think i could fit my cclb dually up there id be willing to haul it in on the next work day i should have it lifted by then

It might fit but getting it turned around would be hell. I know we have a few smaller trucks we could use if need be.

We gave it one shot and realized there was no chance at the 1st ledge in those conditions. So rather than having 6 trucks all try it, we turned back to keep from tearing it up.

Thank you for that. If more would do the same then the issue would not be as bad.

That's on 38s. As always pics don't do justice. Everything that must have been filled in was thick soupy mud.

There was heavy ran last night and this morning. Judging by the looks when we pulled up there was plenty of traffic before us. We ended up turning around.

Definately no where near the ledge it was in December when we went, but with that slick clay certainly just as challenging.

Here is my buddy James on Daniel in December (We don't take many pictures so it was the only one I have that really showed the ledge) James is on 32 or 33s but you get the idea.

Trust me its just the same. Doesn't look bad but that's cause pics always suck and that mud leading up to it is 6-8" deep.

We need to fill that in with big rock like the state puts around bridges and stuff around creek.

All this crazy talk about rip rap and wood chips. It should be okay for Uwharrie to have one trail that requires a winch and/or some driving skill and a non-stock rig when wet. The sign at the bottom says "trail extremely difficult when wet". Shouldn't that be enough?

I agree. I'd much rather leave the first ledge alone and focus on keeping bypasses and the second ledge under control. Doubt the FS would go for it though.

I would say everyone of us here agree with you 100 % but it is not us making the decisions or even have much of a say in it. We did the minimum of what it needed to guarantee to open Daniel up this year. The little bit of rip rap they want to put in up there will only make it a bit less fun but will hold some of the dirt from running off and digging it out worse. It will also give people traction down there.

Seems that some are confusing erosion problems with difficulty of an obstacle. I don't care how hard the trail is if its erosion problem is manageable.
We are on the losing end of a battle with environmentalists period. It doesn't matter if you need a winch on the trail or not, if the run-off sediment problem
is unmanageable the trail will be closed. I wish more people would understand this.

I have an idea for all the fine folks that do not understand why we have to do what the USFS wants done.

Please take some time this Saturday the 5th of April and come out to support Scott and talk to someone from the USFS in person. Then head over and wheel Daniel while it is tore up right now and before it has anything else done to it. Then you get to do 3 things on one day. You can wheel / talk to those that can answer your complaints / and support Scott and the clubs that will be there putting on events for you to enjoy.

Other than that i have nothing to help this situation.

Did it get messed up already? How is that possible? Trails don't open till April 1st I thought.

Yep. I was in the first truck to go up it this year also on opening day. And most of the other trails.

Folks, after the FOU meeting at lunch Debra expressed an interest in seeing the work done on Daniel. I took her up to the bottom of the lower ledge. On Friday Morning I had led a group of Toyota's up Daniel without incident. The lower ledge was very passable George had done some magnificent work. On Friday I was a bit concerned about some seepage of perched groundwater leaking out of the hill side causing the material on the second ledge to pump with traffic. I was excited to see how well it held up on Saturday with all the rain. The water bars above the second ledge were really doing the job to help protect it from washing. These water breaks were built by hand with an incredible and unbelievable amount of back breaking work. They had held well for the traffic volume and rain that had fallen. I ask Debra on Saturday if she could get her contractor to blade these in and she thought she could get that done.

However, the first ledge was a different story on Saturday. The one water break installed between the two ledges was working well and diverting the flow away from the lower ledge. The amount of rain, traffic and the lack of a second water break just above the lower ledge had allowed the fill material to be cut out around the ledge. We were fortunate to run into George, the excavator operator who did the work last weekend at the bottom of the ledge. We were able to discuss a stabilization plan getting Debra's ideas included. We will need to get about two loads of #2 Rip Rap to the site and George knows what to do to fix it. We will also need a heavier machine as George mentioned. I have shared the plan with Snappy and I think things are moving forward.

Hope everyone enjoyed the mud Saturday!

Just leave it alone and let folks have fun

It used to just be fixed in the off season and let go during season why change that now. Add the rocks during the off season.

It was let go too long and now we have had 2 years with above avg rainfall has not helped the issue combined with heavier use since the closure of rml. Argue all we want but the fs has said this is what we have to do to keep it open due to water issues....

Two issues what that approach. We have an erosion and sediment issue to solve but we also have a safety issue for 4 wheelers and side by sides. If they can't make the obstacle they look for by passes and create illegal travel ways to go around the obstacle. Hence, all the blockages and guard rails. So, it is in our best interest to create a doable obstacle for all users that solves the erosion and sediment issue and the safety issue for the ATV and UTV users. The other issue is that ATV and UTV's can't run the cotton Place road and other federal FS roads due to the license requirement. Therefore, once they start up Daniel they want to go all the way through for access to the other trails. Or they come down from the double parking lot and have no way out but to go back up.

What is so important to what Snappy is doing is we are hearing from Region 8 that there will be no new trails, roads etc. We are being told to fix what you have. We need to be in a position to say we have fixed what we have and made it sustainable. Then we can turn the tables and ask for more trail miles. Under Snappy's direction and the participation in the work days the tide is turning.

I'm not new to these things and have been to several of the Daniel work days and helped originally block the bypasses last season. I just wish idiots would use some commonsense and if you can't make it turn around and go back! But just like all other things the masses must suffer because a few are to damn stupid to figure it out. I 100% support snappy and call him a friend. I live 15 minutes from these trails and hope they are still around for my kids to use some day!

I will throw this out there here.... I have been actively going after getting kodak opened back up. What we where told at the fs meeting 2 years ago was get what trails that are here up to par and we can look at new/reopen ing others. Are we there yet? No Are we getting closer? YES....

So everyone knows once this is fixed to there standard, I/other workday people have started written proposals to help fund the kodak arch digs, and the lake view trail. We are taking ownership in our trails as the fs has asked, we are funding trail maintenance, keep trails and crosses to standards and improving the trails that are in need. My goal is to get Kodak back next year and lake view over 2015/2016. The mountain bike guys are getting new trails and I have reached out to them to get there info so we can copy what they are doing for funding, proposals, and man power.
