Evolution of a 1996 Ram

At this point, I feel like the next logical step would be a Cummins swap anyway....so I vote for twins. EVERYBODY wishes they had a set of twins

We all know what it "needs" now!

To be fair....6.4 turbos aren't thatttt big. They definitely spool quick though.

The truck did great. It is so much more stable, and with knowing now how good it can handle the camper, I would never tow my whole setup with a SRW again. I was able to control the entire rig doing 70 mph and even had to do an emergency swerve on I77 doing 65mph to miss the black bear carcass that the semi in the left lane hit and threw into my lane.

Towing all this weight with a gas motor is not ideal, but the V10 did surprisingly well and for the most part I was able to not get left too far in the dust from the diesel tow rigs in our convoy. I finally accepted that I will need high RPMs in 3rd gear to maintain 60mph on the steep hills.

So the new stance of the rear axle of the truck is wiiiiiiide. I put my truck camper in the bed and I had about 1/4” of clearance between the tires and and the front jacks. So just like every other man, an extra 3” I figured would make me perfect!

Damn I'm glad you decided not to go with that 1/2" plate!

I absolutely hate loading a slide in camper, even more so with the dually. I've often wondered about building a frame to lift the camper up from above, with winches vertically. Then you could set the camper on a stand to rest and even roof the frame so it could be in the dry. Sounds like it could be so much easier.

Do you have manual jacks on your camper? This camper has electric jacks and it certainly makes life easier. I actually unloaded the camper yesterday and it was the fastest I have ever done, mainly because the wider stance made the camper much more stable once it was off the truck, so I didn’t have to take the time to lower it so far

So a little update. I learned a valuable lesson not long ago: dont powershift from second to first when going up a steep gravel road when you are loaded up with the truck camper and jeep on the trailer... you can snap a D80 shaft

Then it was time to finally address the exhaust. When i bought the truck, the PO had straight piped the exhaust with dual mufflers dumping out underneath the cab. At highway speeds it was really hard to have a conversation. Also it sounded like two ricer hondas battling to who had the loudest fart can exhaust (ie two inline five cylinders). So now 2.5” dual exhaust into two cats to a magnaflow 2 into 1 muffler with 3” out the back. It is so much quieter and sounds more like a truck now (it will never sound as good as a V8 though). It also has more power and is noticeably more fun to drive. Bonus is it is now completely emissions legal haha
