Gone Postal : Mail Jeep Build

I he racing it or wheeling it? Personally I would build mine like tanks, more plating the less body work you have to do later....

It's a trail rig but i would like to run one of the ECORS races sometime in it. I know i won't win but i just think it'd be fun as hell to run one of those races.

i'm about done with the plating. i want to add that front piece in front of the doors that should about do it. then i will have to build the cage and front floorboards since they're rotten.

You still have the stock motor in that? I could read through the thread but am feeling lazy...

it's got a chevy carb'ed 4cylinder which is basically a boat anchor in my opinion. my plan for the drivetrain is a 4.3l chevy motor, tbi350 or a 4.0l jeep inline 6 and running the factory fuel injection on either option. i'd like to find a ax-15 5spd manual and np231 t-case with SYE to mate to it. factory t-case gears for now. axle gearing will be 5.38s most likely.

Who does body work on a wheeling rig? Have you seen my Samurai? I never fix any of the damage.

i like your style. it's still gota look good tho. is your sammie the white & red one with the gsxr motor in it?

Looking good man, wish I could be around to help you out with this build.

As far as a tow rig, I know a guy that just got a new hemi ram that could help you out with the small fee of a Edmonson off road built tire carrier and roll cage.

As far as the body armor options,I like 2 but its your build do what you want. I know your ability and attention to detail so anything you do to this thing is going to be pretty damn close to perfect.

Hey man. I really appreciate the compliment! I'm glad you like it. you'll definitely be able to get your hands dirty on it before it's all over with. i hope i can make that front armor piece look good. i think it will look pretty tough when it's on there. the only other thing i have to skin after that extra body armor piece is the homebrew yj half doors. i like #2 best also. that is the one i'm planning on going with.

i keep forgetting about ur new dodge. i guarantee that thing will haul it. i guess i just need to get a 2-jeep haulin' trailer for your tj and my mail jeep. talk about a crazy sight going down the road. your badass tj and it's redheaded stepchild behind it.

o and i'm sure i can work up an idea for your cage and bumpers.

Nope, that is my buddy John's. Mine is white with some red stripes on it, but it keeps a light brown textured look to it year round, lol.

1/8" thick armor sounds like a reasonable balance between weight gain and protection. I'd go with option number 1 because like you said that area of the cowl right in front of the windshield there is good spot for a tree to dent.

got the rear corners finished up today. i had a few spots i couldn't get 100%smooth where the different pieces were fitted together but i think they turned out pretty good.

Dude that is saweett!!! I love that thing!!! The armor makes it look 100X better IMO.
The type of job I have requires me to pay attention to detail so with that said, you're missing one bolt in your armor. Let's see if you can find it. ;)

You gonna be workin on this today? Im changing my oil and then I will have some time to lend a hand (althought it looks like ya got all the heavy work outta the way). Doin great work man!

Thanks criket! I found the missing bolt - top left hand corner of rear armor. I've got a drill and a 1/4" drill bit that can fix that. I drilled like 60 holes in the body of this rust bucket. I guess you can say I got a LITTLE carried away. :bounce2:

I doubt I'll be messin' with it today. I have to get more material to plate the doors and the front cowl section. I'll probably work on it on Sunday after the Auto Fair.

LOL, awesome. I really like this jeep. man I need a project, lol.

Oh and redneck up, you win a year membership to the jelly of the month club. The gift that keeps giving throughout the year.

Looks good man, and I found seven if both sides are suppose to have the same amount in the same place. But it still looks awesome.

i worked in the garage a little bit this morning. i started making a diff cover for the front axle from a spare 1/8" thick dana 44 i had laying around. i ran out of 1/2" round rod so i'll have to pick some more up today or tomorrow so i can finish it. i'm being cheap right now so i can do little projects like this for next to nothing.

i really didn't make any progress this week. i just got my postal jeep backed up so i could drive my yj around. i snapped some pics of my yj and mail jeep together so you can see the difference in size.

it sits a lot more level on flat ground.

got my front diff cover finished up today. i used a piece of 3/16" plate to give the center section more support.

got to work on my front shock hoops. i bent up some simple hoops using 1.75" dom .120wall tubing. shocks are 12" travel cheapo free gas shocks a buddy of mine gave me. right now i've got the shocks setup at 5" of up travel.

pre-paint.

i made the hoop as tall as possible. each side has about .5" from the inner fender.

i got my other shock hoop finished up today. i also picked up a rear stainless brakeline from nissanwheeler from the board and bought 5.13 grears, install kits, auburn pro lsd front diff and rear 9" spool from another person off the board. they should be shipped to me next week. i wanted a detriot locker for the rear but i figure i can use the spool for now and get the jeep running, then replace it with a rear locker later when i'm not having to buy so many parts. enough talk. on to the pics.

once i got the hoops painted, i bolted the shocks on to see how everything lined up. no binding. these jumbo freebie shocks have 15" of travel after i measured them. a little large but i don't have to worry about my shocks limiting any wheel travel. :)
ai1024.photobucket.com_albums_y309_95builtjeep_gone_20postal_DSCN2141.jpg

the jack wouldn't go up anymore but the front tire had plenty of travel left. too bad no one close has a bobcat or forklift.

How cool would it be to see this thing deliver your mail one day?

Very unique and cool build.

Looks like crap. Tell you what. Just slap the motor in it and I will come haul it off for scrap.

Thanks guys!

Warbeast, speaking of scrap, i have those old "custom" scrap wheels that i drilled out at the house if you are ever in my area feel free to swing by and grab them. i'll pull that motor and trans one of these days so you can pick that up sometime soon. i can't wait to get a motor in this pile. then i'll be able to deliver some mail for sure!
